She isn't. She skated a good SP at Worlds. She did not medal on the GP or even at Nationals. She also doesn't face nearly the amount of pressure as Gracie or Ashley.

Lets wait for tomorrow -miracles do happen, not likely but at least let's give them a chance to redeem themselves in the LP.
I wonder if Ashley was really not well. Before she even started I noticed that her face was of sort a grayish colour (not that it'd an excuse seeing that Elena was skating with a high fever) but still...
Gracie - I don't know it is so frustrating - the girl has everything which is especially noticeable when both of them falter, Ashley's program with mistakes kinda disintegrates. But with Gracie the quality of everything even with mistakes is still there and stands out for me anyway. I actually was impressed yesterday with the way she held the program together after mistakes, the presentation did not suffer. Maybe she will surprise us all next year. Just remember where Liza was an year ago!

I don’t know if bravery can be instilled, but it can be revealed. Polina struggled during the Grand Prix season. Her short programs at the Cup of China and NHK Trophy began disastrously with falls on her opening triple-triple combination. In the “kiss-and-cry,” her despair was evident. At each competition, however, she came back in the free skate with clean, beautiful performances. They were not perfect, but she'd given her very best. She had not given way. I’m not surprised, then, at her performance in the short program last Thursday, and I have every hope and expectation that she will do at least as well this evening. She is a young woman with courage and strength of character. She will do her part.

Look at it this way, R.D. It's like the March Madness basketball tournament. There are 64 teams in the field. 63 of them will end their season with a disappointing if not humiliating loss.
At Worlds, 36 ladies entered the fray. 35 will not get what they came for.
For us spectators, it's still a great ride.

I have to correct you on this. No, Marta wouldn't. Rebecca Bross was doing a dangerous double twisting Yurchenko for years, and no one told her to stop doing it. Eventually, Bross injured herself doing the skill.
But if Bross had bad technique doing said move Marta would push her to change it at least till she fixed it. Right? Or at least would sit her down and say 'regardless of what you think, your technique is not perfect and your losing points because of it'

Was she landing it? Did she have something that she could have landed as an alternative? Was she losing points for team USA with it? If not I don't see the connection.
No one is worried about Polina injuring herself with the flip. We just can look at the protocols and do math.
Well I'm not giving up on these ladies.
Just food for thought if you take the short program scores and add every skaters best free program internationally, the top 3 stays the same, but Ashley sky rockets to 4th, Anna gets 5th and Polina and Gracie go 6 and 7.
I know that it is silly to compare scores and do imaginative math like that, but I do think it can provide a nuance to the perspective we view the standings with right now.
Ashley knows how to take a mediocre short, or a score for the short that leaves her behind and comeback roaring in the free. We've seen her do it the last two seasons and unless there's something we don't know I have no reason to believe she's not capable of it again.
Satoko's free skate is beautifully crafted and if she skates it to its potential I think it will be mighty hard to knock her off the podium. However, she's been inconsistent on when that potential gets delivered. Based on the scores in the short the judges are ready to give it to her, but I'm not yet convinced she's ready to deliver.
Polina looked a little nervy at the beginning of her short, but she stayed on her feet which makes her 3 for 3 in the second half of the season. Her score did go up from Four Continents and I have a feeling we're going to get the "business as usual" Polina we've come to expect.
Kananko was the pleasant surprise of the event - but it remains to be seen if she can deliver in the long. Her seasons best is only 108.95 and the short has been her strong suit all season.
Rika looks solid and has been capitalizing on others mistakes all season. She looks poised to do that here too, but unlike many other ladies I don't think her fate is in her hands.
Zijun skated a seasons best and she'll have hometown momentum, but even with that the judges haven't been too keen on her this season and she was the only skater in the top 6 to be given a <
I don't think this is Gracie's year. It would be nice if we could see a 2013 style comeback from her, but I'm doubtful that will happen. If she's able to pull something through, even something like her Nationals skate I think she'll move up in the standings.
And I'm curious to see where Anna will be in all of this. That fall was really nasty looking and throughout the rest of her short she looked out of sorts. She can post big numbers in the long but she also isn't one to bounce back once momentum is not going her way...
So the way I see it, the US ladies still have a chance to control their standings and move up. If by some miracle all three go clean, your top four ladies would have a chance at holding them off, but Rika and Zijun would probably both be passed.
If they don't get their act together and we only send two ladies to Boston who wants to pool their money together and buy Tyra a roundtrip ticket to Shanghai?

Not to push things too off topic, but there really wasn't space for Bross on the Olympic team if she couldn't at least do a DTY and she knew it. She wasn't a Nastia Liukin who could get astronomical scores on the other three events and get away with easy vaults.

You're right Marta wouldn't correct that. That would fall to Bross' personal coach. Marta is big on the training and competition motivation aspect. The finer details she sometimes overlooks. The leaps that some of the American gymnasts do in international competition are terrible.

That's how I feel. I still like our skaters, but for now I'm going to sit back passively and let them show me what they can do. Or not. No lighting of candles. No tearing of hair. I'm not very nationalistic anyway, so I plan to enjoy watching the Russian and Japanese women.
I hope everyone doesn't make a sudden rush to anoint Karen Chen and throw off her development.
