I don't know the answer to your question, but that isn't Beethoven. It is the theme of the film Love Story

ETA: I just looked up who the composer actually was and it was Francis Lai.

Jamie Sale and David Pelletier skated to Love Story for to seasons. It was the program that caused the scandal that spawned the current judging system. One of most famous (and infamous) programs in pairs history

Oops. Can of worms there :slink:

There may be others who skated to it as well. That's just the one that immediately springs to mind. Because of the scandal, news skating broadcasts and news stations kept showing at least a segment of it, so the music and the image of the two of them are burned into my brain

Back in 2009, when Faiella/Scali got silver in Ice Dance at Euros, Italian Eurosport commentators said that they were most likely the southernmost born medalists in the history of the European Championships. Faiella was born in Rome (41° 54′ 0″ N), Scali in Monterotondo, a town nearby (42° 3′ 0″ N). Recently, Javier Fernandez (born in Madrid, 40° 23′ 0″ N) has become World Champion, and I guess he is probably the southernmost born one? For Ladies, it has to be Michelle Kwan (born in Torrance, California, 33° 50′ 5″ N).
So, I was wondering who are the southernmost and northenmost born Olympics/Worlds/Euros/4CC champions or medalists for each discipline?

What a fascinating question!

Federica and Massimo's reign as southernmost European medallists actually only lasted one season.

In 2010, Florent Amodio became European Men's Champion. And, even though he is representing France, he was born in Brazil. Sobral, in the state of Ceará, to be precise.

Here are the co-ordinates: 03°40′26″S 40°14′20″W

(The reason for Florent representing France is that he was adopted by a French couple when he was an infant. See this GS article by Tatjana Flade for the story).

So, I'm afraid Javi doesn't even come close when it comes to Europeans!

It's funny, I was thinking of Surya Bonaly, allegedly born in La Réunion in Indian Ocean, but actually born in Nice (43° 42′ 12.24″ N, that still makes her the southernmost European Champion in Ladies- at least that I can think of), and I completely forgot about Florent, who really is not easily beatable as far this primate is concerned!

Looking through other disciplines, I came across some interesting trivia: Yuko Kavaguti was born in Funabashi,Chiba, Japan (35° 42′ 0″ N), thus being the southernmost born European Champion in Pairs.
Elena Ilinykh was born in Aktau, Kazakhstan (43° 39′ 0″ N), closer to Faiella/Scali than I thought of.

So Fernandez, even if he is a pioneer for his country, is not that impressive latitude-wise: Daisuke Takahashi was born in Kurashiki, Okayama (34° 35′ 0″ N) and Yuzuru Hanyu in Sendai (38° 16′ 0″ N). My perception of Japan latitude was way wrong: oh, well, you live and you learn, and it's fun to learn something through figure skating!

ETA I did a bit of research, starting with Olympic single medalists: for Men, the southernmost born OGM is Brian Boitano, born in Mountain View, California (37° 23′ 22″ N), whereas for northernmost there's a crowd: Urmanov and Yagudin were both born in Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad) (59° 57′ 0″ N). Furthermore, we can take into account 1920 OSM and OBM, Andreas Krogh and Martin Stixrud (NOR), both born in Oslo (same Latitude as Saint Petersburg). Paul Wylie, born in Dallas, Texas (32° 46′ 33″ N) is the southernmost medalist (by the way, I hope he gets well soon, and I'm glad to read encouraging updates).
For Ladies, it's easier: northernmost is Sonja Henie, born in Oslo, southernmost is Jeannette Altwegg (GBR), 1952 OGM, born in Mumbai (then Bombay), India (18° 58′ 30″ N). She beats a bunch of Californian champions and medalists (and Arakawa).

Me, too! Thanks for the research.

We have a winner!

For Four Continents, Katy Taylor was born in Houston, Texas, latitude 29.8 degrees north.

HAHA. Here in Houston is a Katy (Renee what's her name grew up there)And the high school is Taylor.... I did like Katy Taylor's skating immensely.

Best to you.

Has anybody seen this? Wow. Are inline skates very different from figure skating? I don't think I've ever seen anybody do a spin on inline skates the way figure skaters and roller skaters spin.

https://www.facebook.com/LovehelloU/videos/1073586072706850/

Holy cow, that was nuts! I had no idea people could even move their feet that way...ow.

I would have thought inline skates were more like figure skating skates, but I'm not sure it's true.

I have a question about spins.

One on the features is "difficult change of position". Which changes of positions are difficult and which are not? There is also a feature "difficult change of foot". How I can recognize a difficult change of foot?

Amazing! And to a very fast version of Ieva's Polka?

I have such a strong love-hate relationship with that song. Maybe someone should skate to Loituma's version for an SP. /joke

Are a cappella songs even allowed?

Still waiting/hoping for an answer to my questions about Senior Bs. Have been asking for months in this and other threads.

The latest version of my basic questions (copied over from The Edge) is below.

Fingers crossed that someone will answer. Thanks for any help.

I have plucked from the ISU calendar all the senior-level comps that are not Challenger comps, JGPs, GPs, or ISU Championships.

@Golden411

Some definitely don't - Japan Open, MWO, probably the Figure Skating Challenge Cup.

Otherwise they need to fulfill the senior B criteria, I can't remember it all off the top of my head & the ISU website isn't clear, but it includes having more than 5 entries coming from 3 different countries in each discipline & having a big enough judging panel - I think it's 7, all from different countries. Plus it must be an event where skaters have to do both segments, so something like Liberty when they can register for only the free wouldn't count.

Thx for your reply, uhh :).

I have seen ISU criteria for a "senior international." (Sorry, I can't find the the thread from the not-too-distant-past in which I had copied and pasted the "senior international" criteria from the relevant ISU document.)

BUT ... I have never ever ever ever seen an official ISU document use the term "Senior B."
So one of the questions I have been puzzling over:
Is "senior international" (official ISU language) 100% synonymous with what non-ISU folk refer to as "Senior B"?

Regarding JO and MWO:
Thank you, I did know that the Japan Open and MWO are different beasts than the many other comps on the ISU lists, but didn't know off the top of my head whether Ashley Wagner and other still-eligibles like her could earn World Standings points at JO and MWO.
(From checking the World Standings points for Patrick Chan, I see that the answer is No.)
