Shoma Uno: 2014-2024

One thing I really loved about Shoma's skate at JO is that all the elements gelled into a flowing whole and, with the way he moves his body and the speed, it became like a swelling wave rising and falling with the music. I know he still he has lots to improve upon, but it really was mesmerising to my eyes.

He performs the music with his whole body and has great skating skills to help him with that. The fact that he loves Turandot and chose the FS himself is very obvious. He is very involved and committed to his performance.

His grin at the end is precious. Hmm, so silver and black here. He's making his way through shirt possibilities!

My mum is the definition of a casual watcher of FS. Will watch every now and again if it happens to be on when she can watch i.e. the occasional session of a GP or Worlds on Eurosport and then will watch at the Olympics and exclaim how few skaters she now knows. ;)

Anyway, I went over there to dinner tonight and she had out her iPad so I showed her Shoma's JO skate. 1 min in: Wow, he doesn't wait around, does he? 2 mins in: He really moves fast. 3 mins in: He is amazing. During final spin: You must show your dad. He'll love him. Subsequently showed it to my dad who also loved the performance. As I am leaving 3 hours later, my Mum: You must show your sister that little lad. Shoma Uno, was it? On my nod: See, he is memorable. I remembered his name!

So, I am on mass conversion duties now!

He is really smiling! Good job, ladies!

Btw, can anyone give a bit of a resume of what the commentary is on his JO skate? I have heard it so many times now that I'm intrigued beyond 'triple axel' and 'combination'.

Does anyone have a link for a video where Shoma introduces himself with his full name for this project? If not, as second choice a nice video where Shoma is introduced with full name? Good audio is essential.

Wow Shoma is really, really impressive. He has the jumps of Yuzuru but his artistry and presentation skills can become so much better than him. He can really be a force in the future.

Your mother is so cute  How many family members have your converted so far?

The commentators are basically gushing over him without much content (as usual).
The male voice is TV Tokyo announcer (not much knowledge), and the female voice is Junko Yaginuma (knowledgeable but doesn't share much), and Nobu at the end.
The announcer guy introduces Shoma is the "ace of the new age" and that he's a JW champion making his senior debut.
For the most part, they talk about his jumps and how successful they are.
The announcer guy says that this season, Shoma wants to improve his expressions and perform a program where it'll remain in the people's minds.
Junko says that he is a skater who has softness and sensitivity but he has added power to his skating as well so the changes of speed is more obvious.
At the end, the announcer guy says "Shoma Uno, from a season of awakening to a season of evolution! A performance that makes Mao Asada happy!"
Nobu gushes over Shoma's layout and says he must have practice a lot.

I have a video of Shoma saying his name (although it's not an introduction) on my HDD, but i't impossible for me to get it uploaded on YouTube unfortunately.
There is a part where he says his name on the video from SLC where he's pretending to be a backstage reporter (2:34) but it's not very clear. I'll keep my eyes and ears out for better quality ones.

An article on sportiva on Shoma:

I just translated the interesting (for me:biggrin:) parts. I think most Shoma fans have already heard about his goals and what happened at his first competition so I left them out.

He knew his biggest challenge in the senior field would be stamina but the problem appeared right from the start at US Int'l Classic. In the SP, he tried to save too much energy that when it ended, he had enough energy left to skate to it one more time. But for the FS, he was dead tired in the 2nd half that he couldn't jump properly. He thinks that he has to to go all out for the SP even if it means he'll fall in the first half.
He used to do run-throughs where he'd stop the music and start from the beginning but after coming back from the US, he began to do run-throughs without stopping and the outcome of his training showed at JO.
About having the 2nd quad in the 2nd half of the program, he says he changed it because it was inefficient and not to make it more difficult.
He gives himself 80% for the performance at JO. He didn't think he'd receive such a high score and was happy about it because of his first outing was terrible.
Watching Javi and Patrick practice, he says that their skatings are so smooth and their jumps have width and stability and he wants to be like the top skaters.
What he needs to work on before SkAm is to polish the SP. The music was chosen to broaden his style but he says it's really difficult.

Just my mum and dad so far, but I am seeing my sister in the next fortnight so I will get more conversion time then!

Thanks so much for letting me know what they are saying in the commentary. :) It is just that they tend to talk a lot and I have no idea what they are saying, but if they aren't saying much of interest it won't bother me so much! ;)

That is an interesting article. I am struck by what a good handle he has on his weaknesses and challenges. I am not sure about what he means by changing the 2nd quad for inefficiency?

Thanks for looking out for a video of him saying his name! It isn't like his name is a hard one, but it would be a shame if his name was missed out of the project.

Seriously, thanks for all you do, Mikaboo! I mentioned you here for that reason. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks, KansaiPJ. I am really glad that he was impressive in person. I certainly was blown away by him on screen. Keeping my fingers crossed I will get my first chance to see him live in Boston. :)

Skate America is upon us this coming week! I am thinking Asian teams must be getting ready to fly over soon, and maybe there will be news clips of them leaving the airport. Best of luck with your senior GP debut Shoma-kun!

I am starting to feel a little sick when I think of SA. Sign of over-investment. And the Predictions game isn't helping. Seeing so many choose Shoma to win, just makes me hope they haven't jinxed him! And I'm not even superstitious!
