Your favorite ladies Olympic competition

For me 2010 was amazing in that the final group of Ladies didn't fall even once. Best overall skating for a final group ever at the Olympics for the Ladies.

I see that no one mentioned 2006. So I am going to give Sasha's SP a shout-out! Definitely one of my faves.

I second that. It was snowing the afternoon I drove up from Nice; I was not disappointed. Cohen gave a performance for the ages. The arena exploded at he completion.

1994 - Not because of Nancy/Tanya. But to see the transformation of Kerrigan from a great skater to a true champion. She had that terrible 93 worlds. Then the knee bang. Imagine trying to just get your leg working again while your competitors were touching up their programs.

2010 - Kim's skate that transformed women's skating. Like others have said the level of skating was so high.

Yuna in 2010 because she had the whole package, which she delivered in the long and the short.

Sarah Hughes in 2002, I was rooting for her before she was put on the cover of Time magazine.

Sometimes I think that, instead of deciding who should be king and especially queen of the ice for next four years, the long and short should be separate events.

More medals, more faces, more excitement. More like other sports in the Olympics!

this exotic Chinese beauty

Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive here, but this particular phrase smacks of slight racism/sexism, though I'm sure it was unintentional. In general, I would avoid using the word "exotic" to describe a person. Cheers!

OP left out the 2006 Olympics (though I don't if there's much to say about that one).

The 90's had way too much drama and heartbreak for me (Michelle</3), and recency bias has me picking between the last two events.

2010 was a very good year just because everything worked out well on the podium. The favored champion delivered for an unquestionable win and a lot of great skaters had their personal victories--Mao with 3 triple axels, Joannie persevering amidst tragedy, GREAT performances from Suzuki, Lepisto, Nagasu, etc. According to some people it was 'boring' but I assume that's because they had no horses in the race. I'm inclined to go with Vancouver.

2014 was technically excellent. A LOT of ladies laid their cases which was a relief given the mess that was the men's competition. History was made with Mao's 8 triple program and Russia's first gold medalist. Legends were established with Caro finally performing well and Yuna cementing her Olympic legacy with two more clean programs. More over, we witnessed the dawn of the young Russian dominance. It was an exciting night of women vs. girls that was unfortunately tarnished by the controversial judging. Personally, I kinda hold it responsible for the insane standard of judging we're seeing now.

2006 a why I didn't bother. Well the winner of the gold was capable of 3x3x3 at that time and did not even feel she needed a triple triple. She was safe and boring and her gold was not Olympic. Sure she is beautiful and had everything by then but she didn't give us an Olympic performance. I forgot her name lol. Seriously Sasha did this amazing short got us pumped and dumped us in the long. Love her, she started the spins so many girls still do and quite badly in some cases. Does anyone even remember the bronze medalist in ladies? It's no ones favorite ladies final with good reason I think. Sasha's said she thought the silver was a gift and Slutskaya was well I dunno.

I think she's exotic and beautiful and she is Chinese. Sorry but I'm no racist. But if you do want to make a case for that a man from your state has the lead in the Republican Party by making daily racial comments insults etc. maybe talk about that in politics thread? More people should be appalled at what he is causing. How is that even possible.

Back to lulu and the word exotic, I'd be thrilled if ever I was described as an exotic beauty. Would you be offended?🤔

I'd go with 1994. There was a lot of talent, and a lot of contrasting styles, in that event. Baiul's SP might be my favorite competitive SP of all time.

I'd be offended bc it reeks of Orientalism. What's exotic about Lu Chen other than the fact that she's Chinese?

Why don't people just she's pretty. I remember seeing Lu Lu in person and the only thing I thought was....She needs a cheeseburger, She was very thin. That was way back 1991. Before most of the current skaters were even born.

How did Kim's skate transform women's skating? Other skaters were doing triple-triples at the the time and beforehand. Kristi Yamaguchi did a triple lutz-triple toe at the 1992 Olympics. Kim skated very well. She raised her own game, that's for sure, but there was nothing transformative about her programs.

nowadays, we just do not use the term exotic.. nor oriental. It's offensive. No need arguing this. Let's move on.

NATHALIE KRIEG ... second best spinner ever ;)

Except for 2014(and slightly for 1994&1998), I don't really have any live memories from the events. When I recently binge watched all the worlds and Olympics from 1984->2014, I liked 1988, 1994, and 2014 the best. I'd rank them as: 2014, 1994, 1988, 2010, 1998, 2002, 1992, 2006, 1984

I think I liked 2014 the best because I wasn't really invested in any skater and could just sit back and enjoy the performances. The top three all skated excellent short and long programs and Mao skated a long program for the ages after a disappointing short.

Oof, someone's a little touchy. I'm not sure why you felt the need to bring Donald Trump into this? Full disclosure - I'm a gay Chinese-American college student, pretty much the opposite of his target demographic. I assure you that I'm not fan of his.

I'm sure there are tons of posters who could educate you on proper usage of offensive/non-offensive words but exotic carries the connotation of otherness, foreignness, or being different than the norm. Which raises 2 questions - are you not used to seeing Asian people? That's the only reason why I would imagine someone using the word "exotic" to describe them. And secondly, if we are operating by that definition, why is she different than the norm? Because the norm is white? That is what I find problematic about your statement. So yes, when men have hit on me by calling me exotic or international I decline. I suggest you excise it from your vocabulary.

EDIT: My apologies for hijacking the thread. For what it's worth, 1998, 2010, and 2014 were the best ones in terms of performance level, technical difficulty, and artistry for me. I had lunch with a friend the other day who recently discovered skating - she said when she saw Kim's 2010 performance live, she didn't think much of it at all because it looked so natural - "like that's what skating was supposed to look like." After she learned more about skating and rewatched it, she told me it brought her to tears. Unforgettable moment. Back then I was peeved about how high her score was, but today I'm grateful for it - otherwise we'd have a Medvedeva or Sotnikova record holder, and that just doesn't sit well with me.

? Racism means believing that one's own race is superior to others', especially with respect to intellectual capacity or inbred morality.

Exotic means from a distant foreign land.

Michelle Kwan was packaged as "exotic" in 1996 (Salome) and 1997 (Taj Mahal). Is that an offensive thing to say?
