2016 Team Challenge Cup - Gen Info/Pre-chat

Is there a lawyer in the house? Reading page 3 of the PDF, It SOUNDS like the USFS will Pay the prize money to the ISU members of the winners and they will pay the skaters, but the USFS is responsible for withholding tax. It does not say that the USFS has to come up with the prize money, or it comes as a lump from the ISU. It also says that if you are chosen for the exhibition and dont show, you loose half your prize money. $617,000 is a chunk of change...I would love to know the economics of this event from the frame of reference of the ISU, USFS, and the promoters.....The tickets are cheep....follow the money and the TV rights.

You understood this correctly.

Also to note is, that all the travel expenses and accommodation are covered by the OC. If this, plus the price money comes together, then we might talk about close to a million US Dollars. I would assume without knowing it, that there is some big sponsoring deal going on, or is the USFS so wealthy?

It will be interesting to see how this event will go, it´s intention is clearly to put FS more into the spotlight, by making it a show with prize money, quite similar to the contests that run all around the world these days and if we consider how much even the most stupid TV formats will generate, in viewers and money from sponsors, then it might work, as FS has so much more to offer than for instance a silly "real life TV show".

I see it work in Asia and the US, TV shows work great there, but with Europe I am not sure. Music shows yes, we even had a few thousand people coming to the model contest by Heidi Klum, but finding a TV channel that would buy the rights for FS, seems very unlikely and I suppose this is the biggest sponsor for the event in the US this year.

Sadly I can not check the event out, would love to, especially to get more information about the whole background of it. I hope it will put FS more into the spotlight, no matter how critical I see the idea of "votes". I wish them all the best, promoting this great sport is what we need and it will cost money, no doubt about it. We just need to make sure, to keep the skaters safe and healthy, they should never become a "thing" like singers or actors have, with all the other tv formats, that treat these people so badly, where they have to sign contracts and giving away all their human rights...

BTW, the lower pair and dance scores for each team do not count toward the team score either.

This is a big boost for Team Asia. They won't lose so much ground in ice dance, while with Sui and Han they will likely be favorites to win pairs.

A lawyer for sure. For some reason I think that the skaters do not have to pay U.S. income tax on their winnings. I am not sure of this, however. Canadian skater Gary Beacom earned quite a bit of money in the U.S. as a pro. He refused to pay U.S. income taxes as a protest against the U.S. tax system, and went to jail for it.

As for the recipient federation taking a cut, I believe that there are now specific ISU rules about how much the federation is allowed to keep for various "expenses" and how much (most of it, I believe) they are obliged to give to the skaters. When Maria Butyrskaya was skating, the Russian Federation kept all of her winnings safe for her in a special federation-owned bank account. The bank went bankrupt and Maria was out of luck.

In general, I believe that the ISU, the hosting national federation, and the local organizing committee negotiate about how much money each will put into the kitty. IIRC for the 2009 Skate America there was a big problem when the ISU threatened to withhold its customary share of financial support because they thought that the USFSA was not trying hard enough to attract television sponsors. ("We're trying, we're trying!" )

The ISU was mad because they had agreed, at the request of the USFSA, to rearrange the Grand Prix order and put Skate America near the end of the season instead of at the beginning so that U.S. television could bundle Skate America, U.S. Nationals and the 2010 Olympics into a big whoop. But it turned out to be only a medium whoop, with respect to TV money for Skate America.

(I may be remembering some of these details wrong.)

The USFSA is far from wealthy. Back in the day (mid 1990s to early 200s) they had multimillion dollar contracts with network television, but now my understanding is that for the most part they have to drum up their own sponsorship before they pitch it to the television people.

However, for this event they do have a million dollar sponsor, the Japanese beauty product company Kose.

When the project was in the planning stages the local organizers appealed to the Spokane electric and natural gas company to become the principle sponsor of record. I don't know how much this public utility and its parent compay was willing or able to put up, but anyway it was enough to get all the parties talking.

Now that Kose has stepped in, I assume that the event's Japanese partners are running the show, with respect to finances. (He who pays the piper calls the tune.)

I have to say, when I was living in the US, I never felt unwelcome as a German and it is incredible how helpful your kind was back then…

I had the same pleasant experience when I lived in Germany (post-doc at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics at Bonn -- actually, at its precursor in the 1970s). A big thank you to your countrymen who didn't laugh too hard at my faltering German. :)

Yes, all of this would be very interesting to know....how much did Kose pony up and for what? Japan TV rights? Or Just Advertising.... No one is going to tell us the particulars..(BTW,.I do know that when a US Am. Skater goes to say Sun Valley ID and does a performance, he she fills out a form and submits it to the USFS and if OKed, the USFS gets a piece of the action. I see no reason that said skater then couldnt have their cut of the money dontated to the New England Am. Skater's particular fund, where it would go directly to the skater's expenses, and be tax free.) Avista clearly thought it was a good idea to promote the event, as you said. But Kose is huge. Dont know the associate sponsor (Kita Denshi) but there are others as well.

More power to them. I hope everyone is Happy! Just wish they had more skaters......
(Looks like my Rika got 5000 more votes since I voted twice for her yesterday, but Latvia has awoke! Angelina is ahead of Radio....)

So I clicked on it and it seems that Kita Denshi is some sort of video game? I hope some of our younger Japanese members can enlighten us.

I also note that the Kalispel Indian Tribe and its Casino are sponsors.

I can just see the Kalispel Northern Quest Resort and Casino from my house. It is huge, fancy, well done and has many big name acts, like "Celtic Woman" The place takes in a huge haul every day.
And they give back to the community!

Those Indian casinos are super generous! I went to a concert of the local city-wide high school jazz orchestra and the Indian casino here is one of their major sponsors. Sadly, this casino is not as fancy as the others...though it has aspirations to get there in the future.

Wow, the Team Europe ladies vote has taken an unusual twist. Russia now has the highest number of votes, and there are more votes for Kuchvalska (34%) than for Medvedeva (23%)!!! :eeking:

I'm not a Zhenya fan, but I sure hope she doesn't feel upset that more of her fellow countrymen have voted for Kuchvalska than her! :drama:

Radio is back in the lead!!!!!

We have tribal warfare here! The Spokane tribe has seen how hugely successful a tasteful, classy resort and casino can be (by the Kalispel tribe) and want to put in one next door....the fight is on!

Yesterday Misha was separated by about 1500 votes and now there's a gap of 8000. Oh no...:drama:

Please vote for Misha! I think he would benefit the most from this opportunity!

another plea for Misha; yesterday looked so good and now he's behind :sad21:

I understand if you have another fave, vote for them, but if you don't, he's missed comps for visa issues, for injuries, and Hanee and Boyang get plenty of opportunities to skate.

Don't you at least want to see what Misha's going to wear? ;)

If you want to vote for specific races... it is easier sometimes to go straight to that poll... so here is each poll linked individually.

Also if you right click on the link rather than just clicking, you will get an option for "Open Link in New Private Window" in Firefox or "Open Link in Incognito Window" in Chrome. Use that link, then when you vote you can close the window, and do it again as many times as you want. Not automated, all manual, just now it takes you one right click and two normal clicks to vote for your favorite and you can do it as often as you want.

Can anyone explain why Kuchvalska is leading among Russians, ahead of both Medvedeva and Radionova, with almost 100,000 total votes cast so far? OK, it's a three person race, but still...

well... that's because Russians are russophobic right.... HAHA makes me laugh after reading all the comments in this thread.

Apparently Angelina is getting a lot of, shall we say support, from South Korea. Honestly I am convinced that voting machines are being used because Lena had like 9,000 votes ahead of Angelina earlier today and now we have this.

Getting kinda ridiculous at this point =)
I wonder what will happen after the bot votes are discarded, and if they will be.
