Random Figure Skating Questions

I'm currently watching the final competition of the Ski Jumpping World Cup season from Planica in Slovenia. And a thought just popped into my head.

Monika Peterka (ISU Bio), the absolutely stunning looking Ladies skater that was representing Slovenia at Junior Worlds this week.

Is she by any chance related to the legendary Primož Peterka, who was Slovenia's most successful ever ski jumper (in terms of wins) until last week?

Of course, it may just be a common Slovenian name. But, it's got me curious.

This probably has a very obvious explanation since I'e never seen anyone ask it before. But I'm just starting to watch pairs more than occasionally and trying to figure out what is going on. So I keep coming back to this question: Why are the lifts always (I think) rotational? I assume it is a physics thing that prevents falls but that's really just a guess.

The rules for pair skating lifts require "A minimum of one (1) and maximum of three and a half (3 1/2) revolutions of the Man."

I don't know the reason behind that rule, but it's been around for a long time, long before IJS. I suspect much of it has to do with demonstrating control of the lifting process. At intermediate and novice levels, and weaker juniors, where you see teams who are still learning to master overhead lifts, especially press lifts since they don't rotate on the way up, you often see the team take a long time at the beginning of the lift to establish the overhead balance point before the man is ready to start rotating.

There are a number of pair-type moves that are common in show skating but not allowed in competition. Lifts with 4 or more revolutions, or no revolutions, generally fall into that category.

More recently (I believe in the 00s, not sure if it was before or after the beginning of IJS), rules have changed to allow "carry" lifts without rotation in the (junior and senior) pairs Free Skate:

Carry Lifts
a) One of the allowed Lifts with at least one continuous revolution of the Man may include a carry. Only one such lift can be executed. The next performed such a lift will have no value (but will block a Lift box if there is still any left);
b) Lifts that are just "Carries" consist of the simple carrying of a partner without rotation, only half a revolution of the Man is allowed on the take-off and/or exit. All holds in "Carry" lifts are unrestricted. The carrying of one partner by the other on teh back, shoulders or knees is allowed in these lifts. Carry lifts shall not be counted in the number of overhead lifts. These lifts will be considered in the component "Transition". They do not have a value and are not limited in number.

Yeah. My boots at the time had just about had it, and the screw holes were rotting. I had to get the screws glued back in, but that was a frightening experience!

Didn't hurt myself - I felt something wrong and just stopped the spin, saw all these little black things scattered around me on the ice...joy!

OK, so I wasn't even born when they were in use. But, the "big" medal looks like it's the size of an old crown (5 shillings), while the "small" medals look like they're the size of old pennies.

Crown: 38mm
Penny: 31mm

A medal should NOT be the size of a coin!!! :drama:

I am going to be at Worlds (yesss!) and I want to get some gifts for my favorite skaters. My question is, what kinds of gifts are allowed to be thrown onto the ice, and what kinds of gifts do skaters actually like to receive? I presume it has to be packaged so that nothing falls out on the ice? I see many fans throwing soft toys or flowers. Any ideas for other kinds of gifts (since I'm guessing they already get more than enough soft toys)?

Another question: I would like to meet with a skater (from my neighboring country of Malaysia, whom I've been following but he probably doesn't know me) off ice to send my well wishes. I've never been to a competition live before... Is there some area that we get to meet skaters? Or are they in a separated area? Is there a specific time this should be done?

I have a question for someone who might know. Where is Sandra Bezic these days? After listening to Tara this season, I have truly come to appreciate Sandra's Commentary. Is there any chance she'll be back?

It seems she is mostly involved in professional ice shows. She was heavily involved in the CBC "Battle of the Blades" reality TV show. Don't know when/if it will have another season.
 
Since Google wasn't helpful... Do you know/remember someone ever skating (as program or exhibition) to "chasing pavements" by Adele? It was such a big hit that it seems strange nobody ever used it
 
Certainly not as a program at the international junior or senior level, since the word "pavements" does not occur in the programs by disciplines files:

Part of this is due to lyrics only being legal recently for singles and pairs.

It may well have been used by someone or other in an exhibition. Certainly other Adele songs were used, notably by Kriengkrairut & Logan-Giuletti-Schmitt in an FD. But they used Turning Tables and Rumor has it.


And a true stupid question: had any one else seen Lynn's name written in Thai? I never had!

why do most of the ice dancers wear their FD costumes during the practice at worlds? does this mean they're gonna use new costumes for the actual FD segment? i just would think that you wouldn't want to wear or train with it that much because you might not be able to wash it/dry clean it.
