State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

What does everyone think about the new icenetwork post-Champs Camp article? Found it interesting that:
* Ashley hasn't yet decided on SP music (apart from it being "fun"), and the program is being choreographed by Jeffrey Buttle this week (has he been her choreographer before?)
* Gracie is changing her LP layout to choreographed sequence, 2x, 3z-3t, 3t, (halfway point) 2x-1/2l-3s, 3f, 3f-2t, 3z, step sequence, spin, spin. There are those of you who thought her strategy of keeping the flip in her programs last year was bad, but she apparently is doubling down.

I'm pleased by the change to a 2A in front of the 3z-3t (which seems to have helped Ashley hit her combo in her Moulin Rouge LP), but WHY no 3loop? Why is there a 3t instead of a 3loop of all things? Wonder if the 3loop is irritating or affecting her body somehow?

This layout is impossible because if she repeats 3Lz and 3F, she could not also repeat 3T, and vice versa. But I like that they're putting in the 2A-1Lo-3S!

(Kind of hoping that solo 3T will turn out to be a 3Lo. She's simply too high-level to be going for a solo 3T.)

EDIT: I read the article. She definitely said 3Lo. Phew! It also says she will be at Golden West. Looking forward to that. :)

^ Sorry for confusion, typed out too quickly. Corrected layout to choreographed sequence, 2x, 3z-3t, 3L, (halfway point) 2x-1/2L-3s, 3f, 3f-2t, 3z, step sequence, spin, spin.

Does anyone know what point difference this change would make compared to last year's layout of 3z-3t, 3L, 2x, 2x-3t-2t, 3f-2t, 3z, 3s?

Gracie to do 3F twice in her LP? Really now...

Why not repeat the loop instead?

I'm .... waiting and interested, to hear the answer to your question from one of our experts at calculating BVs.

:agree: that putting 2x in front of the big combo may hopefully take the edge off the pressure she feels going into the combo. Putting two flips in is puzzling, IMO ... unless the logic may be that Gracie does better with the challenge of new things and gets a combination of bored and anxious when things are the same for too long. Her competition history suggests that, IMO. Hey! maybe it was a suggestion from a sports psychologist.

Just friendly speculating, I hope no one is offended by it. I'm excited to see what changing things up like this will do for her. It makes a complete break.

That was a really great article in IN focusing on Ashley and Gracie.

Wonderful quotes from Ashley, as usual. Jeffrey Buttle choreographs SOI, so Ashley has worked with him before, but he's never done a program for her, I believe. I'll be really interested to see what they come up with. I love that she said an entertaining EX-like SP eased her nerves somewhat last year. We'll see if that happens this year. I hope so.

It's just so weird that Mariah should move right after she finally managed her first 3-3 in competition, looked to be in brilliant shape and blew the competition away at GF. I think it's more plausible that Romain is moving and, with Mariah and him being so in love, she's following him. But this is just speculation, of course.

I was hoping a 2a-l-3F from Gracie, if she is going to do 2 flips. her layout could be easily changed into 2a-l-3f and 3S-2T. just lift off some pressure on that inside edge:biggrin:

Ohhh I would love to see this jump this year

It was not her first 3-3 in comp... she landed a 3-3 (with positive GOE) at Skate American last year, and I think she may have landed one before that.

As for Gracie's new layout. Well i was one that for a long time thought it was a great idea... it seems like a great idea, but i would not put it past Gracie to start messing up her 2A because of it. And if nothing else it will be a good diagnostic tool. If Gracie starts botching her 2A at the start...well then it clearly is a mental issue and it might put it more into focus for everyone what they need to address.

Oh right, thank you for correcting me :)

In any case, she was looking better than ever, so something must have been going alright over there...

I agree this was the best she has ever looked. And part of what might have been working was her getting much more of Kori's attention in July due to Jason being with Frank... though i don't know if she will get more individual attention with Raf unless Raf stays so wired on caffeine to never sleep. I actually can half see a crazy Raf chugging coffee by the gallon in the rink at 2 a.m. coaching whoever is willing to be coached at 2 am.

Holy Cow. So can I.................:laugh2:

Edited to fix error in jump layout, thanks andromache and Layback11.

Pretty sure that Jeff Buttle choreographed the Dangerous Woman program that Ashley did at Stars on Ice.

Glad we're getting all of this news post Champs Camp. All of the coaching changes are making my head spin but glad that Ashley is still working on improving her spins and jumps, not resting on her laurels as the World Silver Medalist.

Gracie changing her layout may work for her, we'll see. I hope she connects better with her programs this season.

Looks like the 16-17 skating season is almost underway so I'm excited to see how it unfolds!
