State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

US Pair Chelsea Liu/ Brian Johnson won the bronze medal at the JGP in the Czech Republic yesterday, and as expected, Lorraine McNamara / Quinn Carpenter won the gold medal.
Today, Alexei Krasnozhon won the silver medal for the US, beating Roman Savosin (RUS), who won gold last week in France.
Megan Wessenberg didn't win a medal, but she did finish 6th. She was the only one in the top six who was not Russian, Japanese or Korean.

BTW, Vincent Zhou DOES have a 3a, but he doesn't hit it 100% of the time. He also has a 4S. He made it to the JGPF last year, his first year in the JGP ever, so he has to be considered a medal threat.

Perhaps you intended to post this elsewhere? This is the US ladies thread.

ETA: here are new SP from Gracie Gold, Vivian Le, and Carolyn Zhang at Golden West:

I just don't see girls like Elena Radionova and her slumped posture as nice to watch, Adelina Sotnikova looks like she needs dance training, Evgenia Medvedeva has great posture but her programs are boring, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva has horrible posture and Anna Pogolyria has some beauty to her skating but her programs are boring. Most of the time I don't understand the PCS scores these girls get.
everything's subjective

& yep its political but not only in one country's advantage
US have their fair share of ppl who always get high scores (too high in my opinion & not only mine)

I & many other posters on our russian forum do agree that American gals usually have great SS & always compliment & I usually call it 'to skate americn'
Being boring is subjective too. I'll take Radio with her, yes, imperfect posture & lulzy JAAAACKKKK programs but emotional skating over someone like Gold with her great SS & good jumps any day b/c Gracie is boring for me

I dont think we can generalize American vs Japanes vs Russian anyway :ohwell: I have my favs among any group They all have positives & negatives for me personally

thanks for posting Gracie's programm
Not gonna comment until later in the season. Imo it fits her.

From now on I will dismiss any criticism of choreo of ANY Russian girl by those who praize Gracy. She keeps doing the same stuff yet another season: the first 30+ seconds doing some "artistic movements" in the centre of the rink, then a curve, then a telegraphed 3Lz-3T. Will she do this routine forever?

Oh honestly, why do you have to bring Russian women into the US thread? If you don't like Gracie or her choreo, can't you just say that? Besides as to new elements, what about the hydroblade and the knee spins on the ice? They weren't well executed, but I don't recall that she's done them in the past.

She had a tough season last year, and she took some time off from training. This clearly was a rough, early skate. Her arms did flail a bit. Her posture wasn't great. But surprise, even if her lutz wasn't great, she didn't fall on her jumps - she didn't even put a hand down on the flip. She moved with some power and commitment to the music. So there were some positives. Let's see where she is in a few months.

There are very few saints here - looks like I am not among those. Same people write in both threads and somehow apply different criteria while writing. But you are right this thread is not about the Russians - it's just they bear the heaviest load of scrutiny and critique no matter what they do - just look at the discussion on page 18 here. Why did these people bring up Sotnikova, Pogo, Tuk, etc. to bash them another time?

I did not say anything about her skating. I pointed out that it is beyond ridiculous to do the same beginning of SP for the 5th season in a roll (I have not seen her new FP yet - before it was also the same routine). 35 seconds is almost a quarter of all SP time and she is doing the same movements (with some "artistic variations") no matter what music plays. How can one talk about any choreo in such a situation?

I bet she can make me bare even Muse music!!!
too bad promised GoT music was a joke:sad21: It would have fitted her very much!

And they payed Lori Nichol big money for that choreo....

Is that really Vivian Le, She changed into four season? Somehow, this performance give me some Satoko Miyahara vibe....

I posted my first impression of Gracie's new SP right after I saw it on the programs thread, I will copy it here, just my 2 cents.
"the first half of Gracie's choreo reminds me a little of Carolina Kostner. She added a touch of curvature, flourish and voluptuous in this Tango piece. I like the music build up towards the ending stsq. it is kinda transitioned smoothly (not like her OG sp, that abrupt transition). Her 3F entry is counter+3turn (instead of double 3turn from last season), this may add a little momentum into her 3F, but still an outside edge according to this outing... Overall, I am pleased with Gracie's new Tango SP, it is a upgrade from her last season Tango SP, like they said in IN interview."

Quite disappointed to see Gracie recycle her last-year "military" style tango-image with straight arms and abrupt movements. A majority of her choreo elements and poses also look taken from her previous programs. It would be nice to see her to take a risk and try herself out in a different role.

RIP, skyscraping Vivian-Lutz

(If it helps her control her jumps so she can land them, I'll deal with it, but I don't want them to diminish her strengths. She is looking more polished and artistic, though.)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply by adding comments that you had said anything about her skating.

As to the rest of your comment, it's true that none of us are saints here, including me. 😉
