State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

In my opinion, Ashley should be the US number 1, above Gracie. Gracie cannot interpret any piece of music thrown at her. At the same time, she is no worse than any of the current russian ladies in interpretation.

I agree that Ashley is great at musical interpretation---one of the best. But technically, she is far more inconsistent than Gracie. It is great that Ashley finally put it all together and won a medal at Worlds, after six tries. It is my hope that someday Gracie will do the same--put it all together, that is, and win a World medal.

Yes that's right...she competed against the russian girl gubanova, whose jumps weren't as good as Wessenberg, yet she made it atop the podium....scratching my head.

She couldn't compete against Gubanova, because Nastia is far away from her skills... Wessenberg could compete against Korean or Aoki, but lost to them both in LP :( Still anti-american judge conspiracy ??
You man, are really very funny in your opinions you posted in this thread  and a bit frustrated I see with current state of US ladies...

Wessenberg has great SS and presentation, and her jumps get good height and spring. But it wasn't enough to hold her up when she popped a lot of jumps in her FS. She also doesn't have 3Lz, which she will need. A promising skater, but needs some work.

I see Ashley and Gracie as being equally inconsistent. It's more a fact of technical ability. On their best days Gracie is stronger technically.

Her skating style is very similar to Katelyn Osmond, even the way they jump. But Megan Wessenberg is already 18. What was her placement in last year's national? Most US ladies at this point would either go to college/semi quit skating if they don't make a significant breakthrough or commit fully to skating.

She was 3rd in juniors.

i didn't like gracie's new sp. it didn't help her that she wore the exact same costume and hair as last year, too. (i know she probably doesnt want to debut a new costume at a really basic competition but still..it's the first impression..could have at least worn one of carly's dresses to avoid looking too similar to last year w/ the tango)

there was a video that patrick posted that had both short tangos side by side to the choclo music. exact same opening jump entrance, same timing, same spins at the same spot.

her arms are so wild too. it doens't really look like a tango at all. it looks messy, and not in the way she wants it to be (she said she wanted to channel angelina jolie and that frank calls this the dirty tango, lol) dirty =/= messy. there are just so many arm flailing movements. it doesn't even look "sexy" which is what she's supposedly trying to channel... it just looks like you're looking at an awkward teenager trying too hard...

Looks like the judges weren't too impressed with Gracie's sp either. Some of the lowest PCS scores I've seen for her in a while. And local competitions usually inflate big names. 7's and low 8's across the bored to total 32.15 for PCS. Very interesting!!

I'm very confused by the footwork at the end of Gracie's SP. The split jump she does is a single flip, which is an additional "jump" element, and it seems odd for her to have so much hand and knee action down on the ice. There's pretty strict rules about weight-bearing with things that aren't feet. Not super familiar with the rules in this case, but I wouldn't be taking those risks!

Yep, Gracie looks like she's not in good shape and a lazy redo SP. Disappointed in this debut and it is reflected in the judging. I hope she ditches this SP and gets a new one. We shall see!

I thought the "knee to the ice" action is sort of trendy choreographic element? Look at Alina Zagitova's sp at 1:26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YTBnA2qe3c
Even in her ballerina LP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YTBnA2qe3c at 1:45 she had the same element. Gracie poorly executed it and it looked more sloppy.

Does it count as a difficult transition?

I'm sorry, I have my opinions, and I thought Wessenberg's sp was superior and her performance better than gubanova.

I think in terms of consistency, Ashley and Gracie are on equal terms, but just my observation.

She said she barely skated the month of July. I wouldn't be ready either. As it is, I give her mad props for doing what she did in the short after a whole month off.

Yeah, I wouldn't be worried about Gracie's "readiness" at this point in the season.

Anyway, showing up ill-prepared for bigger competitions is not something I'd worry about with Gracie anyway. She'll be well-trained and as physically ready as anyone could be, I'm sure. That's not where her problems lie.

Where were the scores posted? I always find this competition confusing b/c they never announce the scores on the livestream. Do they give out medals?

I wonder if Gracie's scores will have Frank and Lori make some tweaks? How about a new non-tango program?
