State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

I'd heard Ashley was touring a lot this summer, mostly in Japan. She needs to make as much $$ as she can as she is independent of her parents and pays for housing, training and equipment by herself.

But going back even to her junior days, Ashley hasn't participated much in summer competitions anyway.

Thanks Chuckm, now that I think about it, I remember Ashley talking about that a while ago. With her good looks, personality, and most important, work ethic, I look forward to seeing where her career goes from skating. I could definitely see her as an actress.

I can see her doing very, very well on DWTS.

She actually hasn't done as much touring this year, as I think her status as World Silver Medalist has brought in more sponsors. She has been out and about quite a bit but it has mostly stayed within the US. She has actually been training this summer more than the past few years. I think we haven't been hearing from her much because she's been super focused. I actually got see see her practice at the end of June (she didn't have any programs yet) and she was hitting jumps left and right, and working very hard on spins. Hopefully this means she'll come out of the gate strong in 2 weeks at the Japan Open. Also praying hard for some consistency from her this year.. I think she started figuring it out at the end of last season.

Do all Polinas have to be injured?:(

I see the Polina glass as more than half-full -- as she recovers from injury.

Her comments last weekend at An Evening With Champions:
"I am slowly getting back into jumping, with my recovery process from my injury earlier this year," Edmonds said. "Though I'm not jumping here this weekend, it's great to perform my show program in front of an audience as the season is beginning, to feel a little adrenaline!"

In her Facebook interview at Champs Camp, Polina sounded excited about the new season -- about her new programs and about her goals for the season.

I would say that competing sounds like very much of a priority for Polina.
She has said that Santa Clara is the perfect college choice for her not only because of its academic strength, but also because its proximity will allow her to continue training.

ETA:

... Edmunds spent much of July at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, working with United States Olympic Committee strength and conditioning trainer Brandon Siakel to keep in shape and learn how to work around her injury. She returned to San Jose at the end of July.
"I'm cleared to skate again, and I'm feeling really good," Edmunds said. "I have a plan on how to ease in. I'm so happy to be healthy and back."

.... This fall, she will take writing, history and political science classes, all scheduled in the early morning.
"I'll have the rest of the day to skate, do schoolwork and everything else," Polina said. "I think it's going to work out well for me, at least this season, and I think as a whole, it's a great school to accommodate my skating." ....

Plus ... USFS included Polina in all of the announcement hoopla over San Jose's selection for 2018 Nats. I'm sure she is very much motivated to compete in her hometown and to be chosen there for the 2018 Olympic team.

This is disappointing to hear. Though I've seen pics of her working on choreography with professional ballet dancers. I hope she knows what she's doing.

I read an article during last Olympics, where her father said something about how getting an education and going to college is important, and that skating isn't always going to be there or something like that.....he didn't sound that encouraging about the sport as long term for his daughter.

And to be fair, she's been the most consistent of the us ladies, yet they aren't regarding her. Losing nationals to stone faced Gracie was an excellent example. So maybe it discourages her a little, of course, I'm just speculating.

Polina was injured last winter, and it is possible that the injury has not completely healed. That may be why she was off the ice a lot and still isn't jumping. If so, it makes sense that she is working on choreo while she can't skate.

Yeah, maybe this too.

Well even if Polina is incredibly successful most competitive ladies singles figure skating careers end before the age of 25, and while I'm not sure what pro show-skaters make I doubt it's a healthy living especially for someone whose according to Wikipedia father is a CFO of a technology company. I mean figure skating isn't the NFL where Polina can bank millions in her 20s and live off of that for the rest of her life. Even if she is successful in amateur and pro-skating, it's never a bad thing to have a back-up plan.

Well there you go, people. She's preparing, so watch out:)

Exactly, I think that's what he meant is that you can't make millions from it like other sports. Yes, in fact, I used to work for a company that built semiconductors for her father's company. Had no idea he was polinas dad

Is there any chance that Starr Andrews might get assigned to one of the last two JGPs? She won the Challenge Skate today and skated very well in both programs. I believe she is 14 and thus age eligible. However, I don't think she is listed in the ISP, nor as a sub for the JGPs.

I think Starr deserves a JGP assignment, but I don't know if it's possible.

I am not sure they can add any more... aren't they all assigned?

What is happening with Tessa Hong. She looked really great at Broadmoor earlier this year. I have heard nothing since. Why doesn't she have a JGP assignment? Her performance at Broadmoor was in my opinion far superior to those of the skaters we have sent.

Does she really not have a JGP assignment? That's a huge disappointment. She's young and talented enough that she deserves all the competitive experience she can get, as long as she's healthy.

Well you might not meet the CFO and I rather doubt there is a big sign saying on his door saying I'm Polina's dad or our company supports a possible skater going to worlds but not a threat for an olympic medal yet. Or worse a sign says, yep, I am the father of that figure skater with the tacky bow on her costume lol. Still it helps to have wealthy parents to support you in this expensive sport.

Kinda. On the ISU website the placements are filled. Ashley Lin is next, then Alexia gets a second slot, then Vivian Le (At Last!). But last week Ashley Lin didn't have a slot, instead Vivian was supposed to go this week. Furthermore they haven't put it one the the international placement list. It's very hard to keep up with what their doing. I'm super bummed that Vivian only gets on slot though. I guess after her injury and changing to Rafael she needs more time.

Tessa has osgood Schlatter disease. She also broke her ankle last year. Ii haven't heard anything about her competing since mid summer. I wish she was on social media so I could confirm if something is wrong or not.

Lol, yeah. I wouldn't call then wealthy though, just upper middle class.

She hasn't been that consistent. She was off the podium last year at Nationals and only made the World team because Karen Chen was too young. She hadn't done much on the Grand Prix either. Gracie skated probably the best skate of her life to beat Polina this year, stone face or not. Polina isn't exactly animated either.
