State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

It's not about her score. It's about the placement. The fact she's made the podium more than once already will help her build confidence and momentum as she heads into the GP's. She's also set herself up as a contender. I don't ever remember her getting this type of attention this early in the season until this year. Maybe I just wasn't paying before now but, I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.

Per Mirai's Autumn Classic performance today, I think if there were any doubts that she could contend for US Gold, they have been erased. Her score today would have won the SP last year, and it would have put her above Ashley's score at Worlds. Of course her consistency will always be in question, but it looks to me that she is on an upward swing.

Mariah scored 184.something at the U.S. Classic, a respectable score. While her performances today were hardly the same quality, I do think two challenger medals are a good way to start her season, especially after last year, which was... Not good. I'm also very pleased to see her so happy. She doesn't seem like she falls apart after mistakes anymore and is very animated in the kiss and cry too. I'm hopeful she can build on this momentum but we shall see.

As I said, I like Mariah and glad to see her progress, but at this point I wouldn't put her as a threat *yet* for the top three spots or that she's gained a new-found consistency.

That said, I agree with you that she's having a much better season now than last and I hope she improves from there.

Same goes for Mirai. One good SP does not a season make, but it's a very good opening statement.

Ashley LIN, a Novice skater in the NA Region, scored 100.44 in the QR FS and 60.39 in the SP (3z+3t, 3f, 2a).
Those scores would be excellent for a Senior skater!

The scoring at the SC Autumn Classic is not quite like that at a GP event. You have a mix of skaters from the extremely weak to very strong and everything in between.

6 Alaine CHARTRAND CAN 56.61
7 Franchesca CHIERA USA 56.09

I think you mean Audrey Shin. And yes she did! Her short is 10 points higher that her higher score! She's really is outstanding. Next year when she moved up she's going to have a killer programs that will be super competitive at the JGP!

Vivian got a 39?!?! I feel sick... I think she's going to be substituted after all.

??? I can't image how that's possible. She'd have to pop all her jumps or have a few elements invalided. :reye:

well she fell on all three jumping passes, and only got the first half of the combo. with the new system it was 4 points for the falls... unless that is not in effect and she fell a fourth time.

It looks like the PCS was low overall at this event. Caroline only got a little under 4 more than Vivian.

It looks like she fell on every jump! What happened to my defying gravity girl?

Oh.........that's much worst than what I suggested....:hopelessness:

And it was such a great day...

Polina T did great in her freeskate and won. Mirai just beat her PB in the short. I just found out that Ashley Kim was better and she, Starr, Kaitlyn and Audrey were competing in Golden Bear. Audry Shin just scored a 60 in novice with a clean 3lz+3t and 3f. Lil' bet did a much better short today. Mariah Bell just got a bronze medal.

I was hoping to see Vivian come roaring back. This is so sad!

To update the U.S. ladies status: at the Japan Open, Gracie did terrible and scored the lowest out of the 6 ladies with a 108.24. And Ashley scored 132.12 in 3rd place!

Just watched their programs.

Ashley did a great job of remaining vertical and emoting (and emoting). The audience loved it and gave her a standing ovation.

I don't like Gracie's new program at all. Seems so outdated to me.

How does that Albert Einstein quote go? "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" ???

HONESTLY, Gracie. Please get it together. I want you to do well, but watching these epic meltdowns time and time again is exhausting, not to mention frustrating. :(

I love Ashley's free program. Dress and makeup also on point, especially the dress. The program still feels a bit empty at certain parts but considering the music it isn't too much of a problem. The fact that the Japanese audience gave her a standing ovation despite the technical errors shows how good her performance was. :hap10:
