MAIA SHIBUTANI - ALEX SHIBUTANI
Skate America 2016
SD

???: Shibutani-Shibutani was such a duet that, according to the general opinion, burst onto the podium - then they looked (no offence to them!) like bobblehead dolls, but later they suddenly made huge progress in their presentation and skating style. Let's see what they've got for us this year.
Gr: It's curious that the siblings always try to evolve and choose subjects they find easier to act out since love theme will look awkward for them, but then they've found a style they look very natural in.
???: In this SD athletes must execute not just mandatory elements, but also some patterns of obligatory dance - Midnight Blues. There it starts. No problems with the patterns, they were clean. Very cleanly executed twizzles, though I think their speed isn't that high, as far as I can judge from what I see on the screen.
I can't call it an outstanding skate, but it was clean, quite relaxed, but it seemed as if they were reserved.
Gr: Perhaps there's no need to go all out on it at the start of the season or was it the fact they skated first which affected them?
???: No, I don't think their starting number could have affected their expressiveness, but that was a clean and cautious skate, no breaks, no mistakes, but they didn't blow people's minds today. Their score will show it.
Gr: Well, taking into account that there aren't so many elements in the SD and levels can change your score, which points do you have to address to get the highest scores?
???: Well, as I said, you have to execute a pattern of the obligatory dance, there are the points judges want to see there, so called key points, which you have to execute cleanly. Twizzles, lifts... as usual, nothing really changed. All top athletes can execute all those elements, the competition is about the quality of execution of those elements. During a lift you shouldn't hold it a second too long, execute al the mandatory positions.
Gr: If we remember that they burst into the senior level much faster than many, they got onto the podium at their first World Championship, how much have they changed within those five-six years since then?
???: They did, they greatly changed visually all of sudden within a very short time, they had a very creative program which was very exciting to see. As for now... their level of skating hasn't gone down, of course, every move is precise and crisp, but I think their FD will show more since there they were free to choose music and moves, so we'll see there, it's difficult to judge by the blues.
Gr: Marina Zoueva, Massimo Scali, the athletes themselves, Maia to the left. Though we see that their step sequences got only Level 2, and their spin lift at the end - level 3, they got positive GOEs on those, and the PCS is high too, so their SD score is not going to beat their personal best, but it's quite close to it.
???: Why did they give their SS level 2?
Gr: Both SS.
???: Both SS, true. But getting the highest level for SS at the first GP...
Gr: They get 73.04, so so far they're in the lead.
