Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

S/B have pulled out of Golden Spin - I wonder if there is a chance of I/Z taking the spot if they want it? Or maybe at this point it's best to just be training and drilling everything for nationals.

I'd have thought they'd be better off concentrating on Nationals, rather than wasting their energy on a Challenger.
The goal is to get to Euros and hopefully Worlds, much more important than Challengers

Well, in general, it’ll be good for IZ if SB don’t participate in Golden Spin, because then IZ can be certain of staying ahead of them in the ratings. As for what’s better for IZ, to stay home and practice more or do another competition, I guess they and their coaches know best. On one hand, it may have been nice for them to have another successful competition behind their belts before the nationals, and since Popova/Mozgov will be there, at least some of their coaches will be there anyway, but on the other hand it is getting close to the nationals. The question is would it count where it matters if they do well at another Challenger or not, and we don’t know the answer to that question, but I would guess that they probably do.

Elena: “Behind you I’m like behind a brick wall.” (And Najarro commented, “Love you!!!” He commented on Ruslan’s video with the dog too.)

I’ve just read on the Navka forum that next year’s CD will be rumba, which evokes for me some nostalgic memories of the Lillehammer Olympics. I think it will be great to see IZ in a rumba!

B/S are travelling for GPF, other skaters are going to Golden Spin - I don't think it's too close to Nationals. And it would be good to keep the momentum going from Tallinn and keep showing to the fed (and to themselves!) that they can deliver clean performances. But if they already have the training program programmed out between now & nats it might best not to disturb it.

This will be a great Christmas present for me. I really hope to be able to watch them during the European and the Worlds.

WE need a countdown to the SD at Russian Nationals!!! whee, whee :)

EDIT: Please, pretty please these two must do a James Bond Medley before they retire.:agree:

Only just noticed this interview with Igor from the weekend - he said he was pleased with the work they did in the summer, the new programs and the work on improving the technical side. It wasn't his choice for I/Z not to remain with him full time, financial issues played a big role. You can't expect massive changes in results instantly, but they gave a good account of themselves on the GP and had clearly made progress.

Thank you very much for the link!

He says: "I’m quite satisfied with the work we’ve done with Lena and Ruslan over the summer. We’ve done a lot. We put together two programs and paid a lot of attention to the improvement of technique. Both of them gave their work their all. Lena and Ruslan participated in the creation of the programs themselves. Lena brought music. Fabian Bourzat helped as well. The decision that the athletes won’t stay with me wasn’t mine. It was a matter of circumstances. The financial issue played a big part in this. It’s interesting for me to see the progress of the duet. But undoubtedly it takes a bit more time to get result. They did well in the GP series. There was progress from event to event."

Then he talks a bit about Chock and Bates, and at the end of the interview he says: "I feel apprehensive about the sameness of programs and the tendency towards slow music and slow skating in the contemporary ice dance. It’s easier to do the technical elements at low speed and get high levels. All of this doesn’t move ID forward."

Ruslan's girlfriend Ksenia is a ballerina at Bolshoi. Apparently they share the same last name and were born at the same day. Wowza. Ruslan skating and hugging with Ksenia in the second half of this video snippet :

Cute video! I saw her dancing when the Bolshoi were on tour this summer - she has a lovely stage presence.

Only three days til nationals! Good luck, team! :hap10:

Regarding Ksenia, she is indeed lovely. But she is clearly not Zakharova, Lopatkina or Vishneva. Ksenia has a typical for Vaganova expressive upper body and "singing" hands, but messy and not clean footwork (also typical for most Russian ballerinas). Overall she is delight to watch in classic repertoire.

That must be why she is officially still just an "artist" of Bolshoi (the lowest rank of the ballet troupe), not a ballerina (the highest rank) like Zakharova, Lopatkina and Vishneva, and not even a first soloist, a second soloist, or simply a soloist.

wow, Ksenia is impressive! and they look so cute together. She is doing my favorite difficult ballet step at 7:04 in that video (Italian fouettes)!

Well she is young, ballerinas in Bolshoi are slow to make ranks. She is potentially a prima material. And I expect her to become soloist in 3-4 years. She is too good for corpse de ballet. The competition in Bolshoi or Mariinsky is high, anywhere else she would become prima in few years. Look at Osipova with Royal, Lunkina with Nartional Ballet of Canada, Kochetkova with San Francisco Ballet, Polina Semionova with Berlin Ballet (currently with Ameican Ballet Theater). They all left Mariinsky or Bolshoi, as they had a hard time to advance in Russia because of high competition and overwhelming amount of talented girls. Kinda like a "bloodbath" or "civil war" in Ladies figure skating right now in Russia.:devil:. Lol. Very similar situation of deep field. Actually very similar to Canadian hockey situation - such a deep field, there is no place for all those talented guys.
