2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Thank you TGee for this history. So wonderful to have our Governor General David Johnston, or Mr. Canada, take such an interest in our National championship.

For our American friends, Mr. Johnston was reported as one of the real life inspirations for the writer of Ryan O'Neil's character in the movie, "Love Story". A former Harvard academic, hockey star and team captain, a university President and all around great guy, Mr. Canada was asked to stay on as our Governor General longer than any other GG in modern history.

thanks to you, Mango and TGee for always bringing so much to this thread.

Skating at Rideau Hall

Skating has been a winter tradition at the Ottawa residence of the Governor General of Canada [GG], the Queen's vice-regal representative, since the 19th Century, dating to the time of Lord Dufferin who was GG from 1872 to 1878.

https://www.gg.ca/document.aspx?id=15123

And it is accessible to the public. If you are travelling to Ottawa in the winter, you can reserve your group ahead and get tickets [one time per season]. There is also open public skating sessions Saturdays and Sundays...

In acknowledgement of that history, as part of the year of celebration of 150 years since Canada was formed in Confederation, a Winter Pavilion has been opened at Rideau Hall [from a renovated former dairy] and the long standing natural ice rink is has been replaced with an outdoor rink with refrigeration that will extend the season, and ensure a skate-able surface through the ups and downs of temperature.

Some of Canada's earliest figure skating events were hosted by the GG, and one of Canada's oldest clubs, the Minto Skating Club, was established by the then GG the Earl of Minto and retains heraldry with his coronet.

So, as much as many of you were exasperated to have the GG drop in during nationals last week [mainly because there was no live stream and it added a further delay to CTV's broadcast], I'd argue it's important to acknowledge the important role that GGs have played in fostering the ice skating in Canada.....

Personally, I think it's great that the current GG is a figure skating fan, and enjoy having skating in the limelight given the profound attention we see usually devoted to hockey culture.

That is really cool! And thanks for all the background info. I enjoy learning more about figure skating rinks/clubs with a history. In the US, one of the places that has always interested me for that reason is the Broadmoor Skating Club because there's so much history there.

And how awesome that you have a high-ranking government official interested in figure skating!

Uhm, did anyone else miss that Alaine's got her own cute tissue box stuffie now? (Adore the look on Brian Orser's face....)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPvUnQkDNeS/

And can anyone definitively say what it is?

It looks like a groundhog (marmot) to me...which would be totally Eastern Ontario, but I could be wrong.....

-------------------------------------------------

editing to add...Figured out that Alaine had tagged the stuffie tissue holder as "corgidogmay" .......and according to the header on the private Instagram account, corgidogmay appears to be a Canadian living in Japan and is a fan of figureskating and other sports...

When I read your post, I remembered that I had seen the tissue box last season and had to chuckle at Brian holding it for her in the Kiss and Cry. I was wondering if all the Cricket Club skaters have one because I know Yuzuru has one, and I believe Javi does too.

Here are some links from her 2015 Rostelecom Cup SP that show the tissue box:
Brian holding the tissue box: https://youtu.be/gHQkAJz2Wqo?t=225
Alaine with her tissue box: https://youtu.be/gHQkAJz2Wqo?t=303

I remembered these crazy details because I've rewatched this performance many times. It was one of my favorites performances/programs from last season.

Here's a link to the whole performance:

Good spotting Weathergal!!!

I admit to having totally missed it last season....perhaps Alaine and her team felt it would help to bring it back as part of her re-boot of the season at nationals...Hope to see it at 4CC.

Still want to know what it is though....it doesn't look like a corgi to me [visions of HMQ with her dogs come to mind..]

I'm also wondering why the senior Cricket skaters didn't get the oversized TCC cricket stuffies the way the pre-novice, novice and juniors did....memorable...

Thanks for sharing the links and stuff guys. What a busy two weeks in figure skating this time of the year is. Almost as bad as the weekend we started this thread where there were like 4 events going on at once. Oh why can't they spread out the fun?

Here is an interview (10:25) that CBC did with Alaine before Nationals: http://www.cbc.ca/listen/shows/all-in-a-day/segment/11400509

Here's an article, in French, about Joseph Phan: http://www.journallarevue.com/sports/2017/1/22/joseph-phan-apprend-et-impressionne.html
His two goals were to make the top 10 at the senior level and get a spot to the Junior World Championships. Understandably he's a bit disappointed he managed to do neither. This is apparently the first time he's been out of the top 10 in a competition. Though he knows being as young as he is he'll get more chances in the future. I didn't know he is Vietnamese and Chinese...like Nam & Chiddy mixed. :)

Eric Radford participated in a fashion show on ice for Quebec menswear company Samuelsohn: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP53CdzjMOf/

A partner for Melvin perhaps. The new Isabelle and Lloyd ;)

Considering the US fed won't send Mervin anywhere prior to the olympics because he doesn't have his citizenship, I wonder why he would remain in the USA ... isn't that why he and Narumi split anyways???

There's an 11 year age difference :slink:

That has always baffled me as well. He is also forever loyal to the Marcotte/Gauthier team so there was no chance for citizenship to begin with. I wonder what their plans will be for the next season.

I am excited to see Justine Brasseur come back from injury and skate with a new partner. She's a lovely skater and has a lot of potential. I am glad their split looked amicable and they are still friends.

I think the split was done at the right time for them. She is injured.. they have certainly heard it from their coaches it's bound to happen... etc... their respective instagrams were very cute..

Re Mervin : we just want him home... he was so great at one point in his career, and now not only he is stagnating but he is not valued.... I mean.. USA could have sent them to 4CC.. .but not even that... I was baffled.... Lubov doesn't have citizenship yet... though, she mostly will get it because of completely different circumstances... However, Skate Canada, citizenship yet received or not, has show great support to her.

Was wondering about bringing the Mervin discussion here. Certainly, wish they had found a Canadian partner for him after Natasha....no matter the fit with Marissa, or the good balance of experience.

I was reflecting that while he and Marissa seemed to be stagnating, it must be difficult to attain the elite levels in the competitive environment when you can't do any ISU events for two years....their performance at US nationals while not stellar was solid and showed they were reaching their stride.

Was also thinking that the situation with the USFSA reflects what Kurt Browning labels as poor parenting. Is it that Marissa and Mervin weren't listening, or that the USFSA didn't deliver he message clearly in private in the past? Weren't there conversations between USFSA and Skate Canada when he was released? Would Skate Canada have released Mervin if they felt there was no hope for him to participate at the major events? Was USFSA happy to keep a backpocket option, but the political environment has changed such that it'd doesn't believe that a fast track citizenship is possible?

I don't think it was just loyalty keeping Mervin in Montreal. I recall he was in the middle of a masters in engineering when he and Natasha split. He wanted to finish that before relocating to the US. The original plan was to split training between New England and Montreal. Not sure if he's graduated or how injury and concussion have impacted the academic side....and why the New England side of the training equation has appeared to vanish.

But as much as I like Gauthier/Marcotte, perhaps there has been some naivety there in terms of believing that other countries will resolve citizenship issues for teams. France and Canada have protocols that expedite and smooth the way. (Lubov 's issue has reportedly continued to be on the Russian side. ) But the Japanese teams end up splitting ...Mervin's case is not unique. And the US has been willing in some cases but too slow in others. Perhaps they should be less trusting that such things can be sorted out.

Mervin did have a tryout with Kirsten Moore-Towers; I guess after that they didn't have a lot of suitable options. I don't think Skate Canada would have had the conversation with Mervin, I think they would just respect his wishes to compete for another federation rather than provide guidance on the issue. From the beginning I think it was already uncertain considering they were training in Montreal, therefore unable to establish residency within the US. I don't think it has much to do with the current political climate. Canada was always much more flexible in terms of citizenship for athletes. They helped Piper Gilles receive her citizenship during the 2013-2014 season for Sochi (although they did not qualify), I think they would do what they can to help Lubov.

i am wondering right now... how come, so many of our athletes skate for other federations... are the other federations pay for their training??? that could be one incentive... for instance for the many young guys skating pairs for Japan... they do get assignments but will never go to Olympics.... (françois is a very good pair skater... he could have done a good job with an appropriate canadian girl, just to name one)...

Is love a factor??? Not wanting to start rumours as I really don't know but Laurence and Nikolaj look like an item... (or they are just so wonderfully good looking and cute on their social media that the relationship vibe is felt ???)

I understand that Montreal is a hub for both pairs and dance... and that many international athletes are willing to relocate to benefit from the wonderful mentorship Gauthier/Marcotte or Dubreuil/Lauzon can give...but... are these athletes missing out on a chance for Olympics??? I mean.... will Laurence get Danish citizenship??? They obviously live here. What about Proulx-Sénécal skating for Armenia? And some of the other pair boys......etc... Are these athletes wiling to do this either because they "know" they wouldn't have a shot in Canada ? I mean Laurence of course we can't evaluate her with Nikolaj but they are making good progress and are probably top 15 material at worlds... that's probably better than Soucisse-Firus (mind you they are developing)... or is it a financial arrangement??? Or is it pure "happy partnership" or "love" :)

Anyways... just wondering... I don't expect answers.... Am I the only one thinking about all these quebec people skating for other countries???

I think a lot of Canadians skate for other federations firstly because we are a flexible country. Skate Canada would release them easily and our country is very diverse, therefore I think people in general are more open to other nationalities and working with them.

I don't think Laurence and Nikolaj can make the Olympics unless the government passes a statute. According to Google, it takes years of residency to establish citizenship. Marriage is 6 years so even getting married won't help.

Apparently for Armenia, citizenship can rewarded without any requirement to persons who have provided exceptional service to the Republic of Armenia. So if the government wants to, they could grant it easily based on vague regulations.

With Canada being so open, some come from other federations to Canada (Kaitlyn Weaver, Piper Gilles, Keegan Messing etc.). Citizenship can be expedited and also due to the abundance of good coaches in Canada, usually residency is easy to establish.

But if I recall Keegan had dual citizenship through his mother...

I know about Kaitlyn and Piper... and of course Lubov... but I do wonder why so many Quebec boys? Fine we are open... but that doesn't give me a satisfying answer... is there funding involved... is there just such a passion for skating and such depth in Canada that they feel they need to go... or is it really a question of matching.... I mean Mervin did try Natasha for one season and then apparently he tried Kirstin as well... too bad that didn't work but I still will always believe Kirstin's best partner was Dylan..

Anyways... as you noticed with my excellent (LOL) editing of the previous and current posts... my ideas are not clear here... I am curious to see why skaters, especially Quebec boys, make that choice... what if that ultimately prevented a girl like Justine Brasseur from getting a great partner?

^^ I also believe that one of Piper's parents was Canadian also, similar to Keegan.

If one of her parents was Canadian and Canadian born, then her application for citizenship would be simple. Not an oath situation. This was Keegan's situation as I understand it.

But if one of her parents was a Canadian born outside Canada, and had his/her citizenship granted on the basis of Piper's grandparent(s), Piper would have had to go through the process from zero. But it would show attachment to Canada that would help in the original application to become a landed immigrant / permanent resident.

Basically, Canadian citizenship can only be passed down a single generation when a child is born outside Canada.
