Now they have the Mayor......THE MAYOR of Calgary playing human Curling...Who does that :drama: BTW, did you guys hear about the people they caught trying to escape the US heading into Canada? I swear I'm gonna be on CNN.........Chocolate Smurf arrested at the Canadian Border with Figure Skates, Ballet Slippers, and a Patrick Chan Poster. News at 11:00.

mrrice if you decide to come up please protect your extremities. Too many refugees from the US are getting frostbitten.

David Baden has let us know that Lubov, Dylan, Julianne, and Charlie will be part of Stars on Ice Canada.

Right after Nationals Skate Canada released the news that IMG will now be representing them.

Liam Firus will be making an appearance at Winterlude this weekend.

Liam Firus will be making an appearance at Winterlude this weekend.

Winterlude [French: Bal de neige, and the lack of literal translation is intentional...] is the annual winter festival in Ottawa.... This year February 3-20th.

[Quebec City has the winter carnival with the Bonhomme]

Jeff Buttle skated on the weekend at the Rink of Dreams in front of City Hall [one of three groomed and refrigerated outdoor rinks now that the GG has one]

But what I want to see is an appropriately frost-bite protected Chocolate Smurf tearing up the 7.8 kilometres of the Rideau Canal Skateway [hint: bring a pair of Ice Lights neoprene skate covers with you from California] Or perhaps riding the new zipline across Jaques Cartier Park..

Interesting feature article from CBC sports..."My heart broke into pieces: what it's like to fall at the Olympics...with input from Meagan Duhamel and Kurt Browning.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/figureskating/olympics-figure-skating-falls-1.3969096

The comments section gets into a discussion of the cash incentives from Sport Canada received by Olympic Medal winners.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hadn't been aware that the Canadian Olympic Committee had set the incentives for medals...Here is what the CoC site says...

The COC’s Athlete Excellence Fund (AEF) is a support and reward program that provides Canadian athletes with performance awards of $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000 for winning Olympic gold, silver or bronze medals respectively. It also provides funding of $5,000 during non-Olympic years, to support living, training, and competition expenses.

http://olympic.ca/programs/athlete-excellence-fund/

While the absolute amounts are small compared to training expenses, it seems likely that other awards, bursaries and sponsorships will be based on this system. Certainly, it's understood that the CoC wanted to break away from the 'bronze or 4th is good enough" attitude that seemed to prevail in Canadian sports in the past, but not having reduced awards for top 5 finishers seems short sighted.

Luba & Dylan confirmed for the full Stars on Ice show list:

I actually caught Dylan in the lobby of the ACC last year with his girlfriend and family, ready to cheer on his friends. He'll be on the ice this time around. :)

Michelle Long was skating this weekend at City Place Rink in Toronto:

As posted elsewhere, Skate Canada BC/YK is sending some skaters out to Challenge Cup 2017:

Seeing that Emily Bausback and McKenna Colthorp are not on the list I am thinking we may see more assignments that allow the girls to compete individually (and not head-to-head).

Meagan & Eric did a photoshoot for Le Chateau and they look like they could be in a magazine!

And then Meagan jetted off to 4CC in business class:

Dylan & Luba also set off yesterday:

Kirsten and Michael were ready to go:

Though Bryce pointed out this was almost the same photo as they took before Nationals:

Busted!

Alaine posted an Instagram story of her getting ready to go. Gabby was also hyped to go. As was Paul Poirier, who was whooping at Pearson - something he does every time they go to compete apparently.

Kaetlyn wasn't flying off. But I didn't think she could look adorable even when impossibly stretching:

Tessa & Scott are in PyeongChang.

Everyone's hyped for 4CC! :party2:

i would say many Canadians would approve of this nickname.... :ddevil:

So the line up for events so far is

2017 ACI: Montreal
2017 SCI: Regina
2018 Challenge: Montreal
2018 CTNSC: Vancouver
2018 Grand Prix Final: Vancouver

I'm seeing a lack of events in Ontario, Manitoba, and the Maritimes. In recent years: Alberta got 2015 SCI and 2016 Challenge, Halifax 2016 CTNSC, Mississauga 2016 SCI, and Ottawa 2017 CTNSC .

Now I wonder where Worlds 2020 will be if Canada gets it. Not the West Coast, please!

i know it's not related but SOI doesn't come to Quebec at all... so it's a blessing we got something at all with Autumn Classic and Challenge... otherwise, very little skating...

Is that due to arena limitations? It's bizarre. I guess you guys have to go to Ottawa if you want something?
