Sad for the sport, happy for them for pursuing new things and the joy of Charlie's twitter!

(Met them both briefly at a free Cleveland show on this past weekend, got a photo and autographs. The first time I've ever talked to elite international skaters and I was completely starstruck!)

I'm not surprised. They seem very happy with where they are right now, and have been actively supporting the current U.S. ice dance teams competing.

They are so graceful and kind people. I am happy for them; it was their choice. I don't think you or anyone should feel sad for the sport. They won OGM and were wonderful ambassadors of the sports as competitive skater and now as pros. Others will rise up :)

A little tiny part of me just hoped that they'd come back to make sure that Tessa and Scott don't get too complacent after winning everything this season ;). And with the general turn towards modern and romantic programs (which I do enjoy), I do miss D/W epic classical FDs.

I feel like Chock and Bates could fill that role that D/W have with the epic, dramatic programs (I thought their Les Miserables FD from 2014 worked really well for them), but they are clearly trying to go in a different direction as well. I do think they do provide a contrast to the other teams...Weaver/Poje do dramatic programs well, as does Bobrova/Soloviev.

ETA: Tessa and Scott seem pretty motivated by reaching their own goals. And given Davis and White's current state, I think even if they returned, the rivalry would have not been epic because I just don't get that intensity either of them for competition or even a greater legacy -- the prospect of Virtue and Moir getting two OGM (vs just one for them) is not even a driving factor, clearly, which tells me both teams are very much defined by their own personal goals and aspirations.

Tessa and Scott seem to be very focused on the Olympic games, so I doubt they'll be getting complacent. They've been around long enough to now that complacency doesn't win medals.

I know. That's why I put the winky face. Still, nothing like the return of an old rival to push you harder than ever.

Davis and White did it right. They put their all into their competitive career and now they have moved on. Very impressive path for all athletes to show that life cannot be defined only by accomplishments in sports.

I never thought they would, but I admire them for saying it clearly a year in advance.
I hate it when skaters pretend they are considering to come back when obviously they have zero intention of doing so.

Agreed. They are true legends of US figure skating and have already accomplished everything there is to achieve in the sport.

Glad they won't compete. They've moved on and are doing so well with other things they are doing. Love when they are at the Icenetwork desk.

Very wise move for them. And Tanith, I would think. What is there really to be gained in their lives by dropping what they have going now and competing another year? And what could be lost? Better to carry on and ride their wave NOW instead of getting off the surf board and going back to the grind they were on for so many years....."today is the first day of the rest of your life"....I think we shall see them around for quite some time doing one thing or another...and that is a good thing. I would bet a nickel that Tan and Ben are happy THEY aren't comming back either...;)
Chris who isnt going back to be a Police Communications Specialist either....:yahoo:

This is probably not a popular opinion (which has never stopped me before) but I wish Tessa and Scott had gone the same route. Yes there is an argument for the best team winning, but this is their 3rd Olympics and it's time to give someone else a chance. That plus the fact that I think their scores are inflated because of who they are. Time to move on to the next phase of their lives. I think Meryl and Charlie have handled themselves in such a sportsman like and professional manner. It's wise to finish your education, that's for sure. And I wonder if there will be a little White in the near future. Can you imagine how gorgeous a child of Tanith and Charlie would be? (okay, that's the grandmother in me speaking)
