2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

well not quite...

when I wrote KIN-TIN... i meant it to be pronounced in French... the I is not an EE so it's more like CANE (but no NE wet sound...) TANE (same, no NE sound).. the vowel sound we have in French for this doesn't quite transfer to English

So, how would my name be pronounced. In Japan, there was no sound "Qu" they pronounced my name as "Winton Lice" In Russia, it sounded kind of like "Kin-Ton" Maybe it was the announcers because once I say my name out loud, people usually understand it and it's never a problem.

hold on ;)

if you say your name, people will pronounce it how they think you said it... very different ;)

But if we read it, and that's what I was talking about, based on its spelling Quintin, it's another story. Kin-tin in French but the IN sound is like in Vin or Bain or Cain or Saint.

Qu in German for instance is pronounced KV ;) but they do have in more or less like English... kvintin :)

in any case, this may look so off-topic but it is at the same time so representative of Canada... I have a "bilingual" first name and a French surname (which is actually not too difficult) but when living in BC : only ONCE at the grocery store did I get my name pronounced properly ;) That store had a reward program and you would give your card and they would say Thank you Mr.... ^%&%&^%

So once, a girl said my name right and I said... wow... i have been coming here for ten years and you are the first to say it right...

And I heard a billion version... people thought it was polish, russian, jewish, french, english, swedish, danish.... etc... and added or removed letters as they saw fit.

In any case, I think PJ Kwong does a very god job announcing figure skating, and parts of it is because she seems to be a good and caring Canadian in looking at how to pronounce names

Segue back to Canadian Skating by bringing up PJ. :)

Who is your favourite CBC commentator? I like Tracy Wilson the best.

This is correct. When I lived on base I would say the closest to how it "Sounded" was KaVintin.

Here's Larkyn on the podium (interesting arrangement): https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ_ebI1D7R7/

I'm happy she was able to successfully return to figure skating. She's got things to work on, but this is a step in the right direction.

Synchro nationals are happening...there's a live stream too. Ted Barton and Terra Findley have been commentating. Informed us of more events with commentary to come next season.

The World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships will be in Mississauga. COS is looking for volunteers: http://www.skatecanada-centralontario.com/Storyboard/volunteers needed.pdf

Kaitlyn & Andrew looked to have had a fun time at Toronto Ice Dance Weekend and in celebrating Andrew's birthday with Dylan and Mitch. Here's a photo with Javier Raya: https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ_FcFLgw3k/

Medals count
20 gold, 17 silvers, 17 bronze = 54 medals in total

Skate Canada includes international synchro medals in their medals count. Would you guys like me to do that too?

in honour of SarahSynchro yes ;) for the medal question

A little piece of trivia : Larkyn hasn't been on the National podium as a senior skater, yet she has done it internationally. :) Elladj has also never been on the podium at Canadians, yet last year he won Nebelhorn. I wonder how many of such examples we have in singles. I am thinking that it could be more frequent in pairs and dance.

I LOVE Austman's coach's excitement! He got into it at Canadians as she became overwhelmed realizing she had made it on the national team, and it has flowed over at CC's.

Michelle Leigh, could learn from his example...:hap57:

Do you know if Larkyn's videos have been posted and if so by whom?

I see many of the Challenge Cup videos are posted, but am not finding the Canadians among them.:scratch2:

Were Ted and Terra mentioning just more synchro events with commentary, or others? It would be great to see some more of the sectionals or national summer series...

Not sure that this got reported last week...

University of Toronto has won back to back University Athletic Association [OUA] Championships....Here's the result summary...

http://oua.ca/sports/figuresk/2016-17/releases/20170215tz3bik

And for those that don't follow university level figure skating, the disciplines and levels are somewhat different and interesting in Canada...

The upper STARSkate recreational track competition levels are held [STAR 10, Silver, Gold], but the Novice competitive category is also offered. And while there are the usual singles categories, in pairs and ice dance the teams are 'similar' [i.e. same gender], and synchro teams are a major part of the program...

I noticed Denis Margalik was on the Western team.

Any news on Seguin/Bilodeau? Do you think they'll be competitive for worlds, and if so, where do you think they will place? I think based on their up and down season, they could go anywhere from 6th to 12th...

Welcome timmybopper! [don't think I've seen you post to this thread before.]

What we do know is that Julianne and Charlie are booked for the Stars on Ice tour this spring and are still assigned by Skate Canada for Worlds. So it sounds as though the recovery is on track.

CBC has recently recorded an interview with them as noted a couple of pages back in the thread, but I don't see that it has been released yet. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1899456563669187

Julianne and Charlie's twitter account is kept fairly current so you may wish to track it for updates...https://twitter.com/JulianneCharlie

...and you may also wish to drop into Julianne and Charlie's Fan Fest. While there is a growing contingent of fans of Canadian skating on GS, we do struggle to keep the Fan Fests of the Canadian pairs teams vibrant.

I feel like he just asked a question at the welcome desk at the hotel, and you're the concierge. :laugh2:

I was at the OUA championships two weeks ago! It was held in my city, so i made it over just in time to watch the synchro event. My alma mater Brock University won the bronze medal overall, yay!

What does OUA stand for? It seems kind of a made up even or something. And this can't be a national thing right -everyone is from Ontario and while it is my understanding Ontario may think it is the centre of the universe or at least Canada it seems odd no other teams for a University championship unless it is just Ontario.
