2016-17 Splits & Partner Changes

Maybe Elizabet Tursynbaeva is interested in pairs ;) I can't think of anyone else that small.

And he would have spots to Europeans and worlds guaranteed! It is not as if Kazakhstan had that many pairs, so it would be pretty easy to be the national champions. The only tiny problem I can foresee is- what if she doesn't want to do pairs? (I know, how selfish of her!)

Not that this is an apples to apples comparison, but this is the Vaganova academy height and weight chart. Note that Vaganova is probably the strictest around (and also one of the most prestigious). . Not saying these weights are healthy but you get an idea of where the ideals come from.

Fascinating....

Totally agree that these may not be healthy weights...While I totally respect the instruction methods of this school, it doesn't really seem like Vaganova accepts that muscle mass weighs more than fat...

That said, the chart is for girls, and not women

Wow. That's just... 5 feet 81lbs is the ideal. That kind of makes my head want to explode. I know someone who is 5'7 and has weighed as low as 105. Her hair started to fall out.

According to the BMI at 5 feet you'd have to weight 95lbs before you'd be considered not underweight. I do understand that is for normal people and not athletes.

Being underweight, while certainly not as bad for you as being overweight (unless you are severely underweight), has some big health repercussions.

Actually, a fit elite athlete would have higher weight for the same waist circumference....muscle mass weighs more than fat.

I couldn't really read the chart itself. It's so tiny. I read what it said at the bottom about ideal weights.

That Mishina and Mirzoev do not get along was clear to me in Chelyabinsk. I was sitting in the airport's waiting area next to them and they just ignored each other.

Nastya made an interview. She said that they will skate till the end of the season. Then she said a weird thing: "He wants a partner 8-9 kilos less than I. It won't be possible for me. My current weight is 46 ". Is he looking for a 37-38 kilos partner? What should her height be? 4'7 - 4'10 (140 - 147)? That's definitely not Yulia who is 158 and weights 48.

I think if Mirzoev cannot handle a 46 kg partner he should think seriously about the next steps. The case of Yulia Antipova is still fresh.

Thanks so much for raising this concern....

And it speak so much to the power that male partners have in pairs and ice dance teams...

I could find nothing. Apparently she gained healthy weight (mentioned 50 kg) and a year ago said that she wants to be back and aim at the Olympics. But realistically top pair skating is so demanding and taxing that after what she experienced it does not look feasible.

Of course, the coach and partner are to blame. But her own father was said to be overambitious as well.

Hence, as there is no news I think she has reverted to normal life so that I wish her all the best.

Thank you.

It is so good to hear that she is now at a healthy weight again. Seeing those photos and videos of her when she was at her worst was really scary.

To be honest, I was not expecting Yulia to return to skating competitively. When you have had an eating disorder once, it is so easy to relapse. And being in the same environment again could bring it on again.

So, personally, I would prefer her to steer away from returning to competition. If she wants to skate, just do it as a hobby, or in shows where there is less pressure.

As long as she is healthy, and stays healthy, that is all that matters.

It has to be considered that ballet academies (and rhythmic gymnastics for that matter) select for a particular body type from the get go - tall with a narrow frame. For them those charts may work. A ballet dancer/gymnast of Mishina's height would be a 12 y.o. girl, and a very slightly built 12 y.o. girl. Female pairs skaters are simply of the wrong build to have ever made it into a ballet academy and it would be strange to expect them to conform to those numbers.

Also, I have formed the impression, though it could be wrong, that Elizabet has a very strong personality. I think he likes to be in charge. It would be fun to watch the fireworks that would ensue if they were partners.

I've noticed that in the most successful Chinese pairs teams, the woman seems to have a very forceful personality. I remember someone asking Tong if he might make yet another comeback for yet another Olympics. He said something to the effect that they'd have to ask Pang, that he never expected to make the first comeback, and that he was as surprised as everyone else was that he was competing (again).

Yup, pairs girls may be small, but all the good ones seem to be firey and feisty....

Elizabet though was a music prodigy before she was a competitive skater. While as a violinist she has performed with other musicians, she mainly was a soloist from what I understand.

Pairs teams have to want to be pairs, and enjoy the partnership. Its a temperament thing...Most have learned to skate with a partner from a fairly young age, although men often add or switch to pairs later, at junior level, due to the need to have the upper body development.

And Elizabet is not seeming to be patient about advancing. Brian Orser had mused when she came to him that she would benefit from an additional year as a junior, but he believes in skaters owning their strategic choices, and let her move up to seniors. Waiting two or more years to learn to skate pairs and have a partnership gel is hard to imagine as something she would go for. She's right now her national champion in her own right...

Finally, Elizabet may have some growing yet to do. Her parents and brother are not so short. Some people just are on a slower growth track, but get to where they should be in their own time. I wouldn't believe that she will stay small. Joining a partnership with someone who dumped his partner because she wasn't small enough would be inappropriately courageous.

YES. THIS. The girls pretty much are dispensable. I long for the day when this no longer the case :) If Scott Moir bailed on Virtue because of their limited difference in size, we wouldn't have them to enjoy today. I have renewed respect for him these days considering what has transpired these last couple of seasons.

Happy that Nastia found a partner so soon! :)

So am I, but I am a bit upset that they broke up a pair who was pretty succesful. Osipova/Galliamov were together first season, it is Osipova's first year as a pair skater and yet they achieved scores around 160 and once even 170 at Russian competitions. I wish they would stay together, to see how far they could have got.

It also bothers me a bit that Mishina will be his third partner within two years. I can understand that he wanted to skate with Mishina when the opportunity arose, but to me it says that he has no loyalty toeards his partner and if Mishina ever started struggling, (and she may, see Borisova and Atakhanova, both so strong last year and struggle this year), Galliamov won't be waiting for her to sort it out; he will just move on.

Oh well, any news on Osipova's new partner?

It looks like Taylor Tran/Saulius Ambrulevičius have split and she's retiring from competitive skating
She has posted the following message on Instagram:

A thousand words cannot describe the memories, lessons, experiences, and joy that I've gone through in the past three years skating with Saulius. It was not an easy road. Through difficulties, I learned to live life in color. I am forever thankful to Saul for going on this crazy journey with me. A big thank you to Marina, Massi, Oleg, and Johnny for sharing your knowledge and energy. And another thank you to family and friends for your endless support. Last but not least, thank you to my training mates for your constant jokes and good vibes. I leave the competitive skating world happy and grateful for everything it has given me. New adventures and journeys await, although personal growth and relationships made remain the same.
Xoxo,
Tay

Not impossible. E.g. Kavaguti... Moskvina said in a recent interview that Kavaguti weighs under 40 kilos. But obviously it will be extremely hard to find such a partner.
His last junior eligible season is 2017-18. Mishina's 2019-20. So he has one more junior eligible season, she has three more.

OMG I didn't realize how tiny skaters could be and how tiny someone at 95 lbs and five feet two really is - that actress Susan Lucci claims she is slim and curvy. But at 95lbs (she was even skinner at times during dancing witht he stars) I just wonder how healthy it is for Kavaguti and co.

I'm pretty sure that some of the issues Kavaguti has skating wise are due to her very low weight. I think she just doesn't have enough muscles to handle the strain of those pair elements. Single jumps, all jump landings and she always obviously tires during a program, she always loses body tension. I like K/S a lot as a pair and I'm sure they'd have been much more successful if she were healthier. And I never had the impression that Moskvina or Smirnov wanted her to be that thin.
