2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I've been following skating for decades and I never heard Surya referred to in that way.Was this just in France? I promise you that any poster on this site would have been in BIG trouble if they had said something like that. I understand that people have their favorites but, the best thing you can do is talk about a skater that you love instead of attacking another. We are all above a place where we need to call people disparaging and racist names to make our point.

I feel the same way. I do remember a few general opinions among my figure skating fan friends. We were all critical of her looooong setup/ telegraphing of her jumps. We thought she needed someone other than her mother to be her coach. We were in awe of her amazing costumes and her athleticism.

Well, it's just like Ashley to be the first female figure skater to be featured in the Body Issue! She has undaunted spirit!

The photo seems both nonchalant and her expression a little cheeky.:cool14:

Although Ashley apparently is the first *ladies* figure skater to appear in the ESPN Body Issue, she will not be the first female figure skater.

Regardless, a nice recognition for Ashley.

A photo of Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig is in the 2011 issue.

The only online image I could find of Amanda/Mark's photo is in an eBay listing for the issue.

Gracie Gold was one of the USFS ISP camp-ers this year, per the class photo posted yesterday by several skaters.

(Alysa Liu and Ashley Kim tagged Gracie, who is next to Dolensky in the photo.)

Non-exhaustive list of other ladies in the photo (in no particular order):
Starr Andrews, Brynne McIsaac, Ting Cui, Avery Kurtz, Hanna Harrell, Ashley Lin, Angelina Huang, Madison Nguyen, Audrey Shin, Livvy Shilling, Bradie Tennell, Pooja Kalyan, Paige Rydberg, Isabella Miller, Alyssa Rich, and ....
I think Vivian Le is next to Starr.

I saw that photo of Gracie! I hope she had fun mentoring the kids. Great smile as always.

Are you sure that Gracie was there to "mentor" the kids?

I did not interpret the photo that way.

I could be wrong, but I got the impression that she was just one of the campers -- same status as Bradie, Starr, et al.??

I recognize the jacket that Starr is wearing. When we were in Colorado Springs about a month ago, I got that same jacket for my daughter and it was only available in XS. Maybe the jacket is old but if it was newly pruchased, it is size XS which means she is TINY!

Agreed! I thought she was one of the campers. Will she also go to "Champs Camp" since she has some GP assignments?

They have experienced mentors at single and pairs camp every year. This time it was Gracie and Tim's turn. Of course she'll be at Champs camp. My concern is that she won't be at Skate Detroit. I thought for certain she'd debut there.

I hope being at this camp will help Gracie get her groove back. Maybe it's good for her to be around a group of young and motivated skaters. I really did feel bad for her during her recent shows and I hope that was a temporary set back. If she's not training fulltime, then this is next best thing for her to be doing. I hope she has a good time.

I was disappointed we didn't get to see Ashley Kim perform at the grand prix competition in Yokohama. I think she was picked to compete there but was injured and had to withdraw? I hope she is still training and would love to see her upcoming programs.

Thanks for link!!! Ting cui is I think another upcoming talent.

I don't think those yougn talented girls need mentoring hehe.

I think you're kidding but, in case you're not, I believe they're shots from her Sports Illustrated Body Issue.

ESPN (not SI) does the body issue. It think this is the 11th year for it. The concept is to show the beauty/power of the human form when in athletic endeavors.
I must say I "get it" with the track athletes, but it seems silly to be nekkid (except for skates) in a cold ice rink.

:laugh2: I never thought about that but, you're right.

I saw on Alexia Paganini that she skated her senior free test. - "Senior Free Skate Done! Officially a US Figure Skating Gold Medalist!<3 "

This is something that I think was often brought up by commentators such as Dick Button. While it was true, many other skaters had long set-ups for jumps; Carolina Kostner had similar telegraphed entrances for the flip and lutz but wasn't as often criticized for it (although she obviously did a lot of other things better than Surya).

I highly doubt either Ashley or Amanda/Mark were being photographed in the rink. The skates are a prop. Very effective, too.

I think the concept is also to throw attention back to the original Olympics competitions, when athletes competed in the nude.

I think part of the idea is to show show different incredibly fit bodies can look, hence the different sports.

As for naked in an ice rink... honestly meh. They wear skimpy stuff normally, it is likely that that much weirder being naked on ice than in a studio. Heck some might even like the chance to skate naked. Also... i suspect it is fake ice if not just the floor... or photo-shopped.

Also what is wrong with silly and being silly while naked... are we sure some playful silliness is not the point. There is enough sexy nudity in the world that I think there is room for silly nudity!

Never said there was anything wrong with being silly, nude or not. (I probably should have used "incongruous" instead of "silly.") That being said, I saw nothing "playful" in either of the photos with skaters.
