2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

What does that even mean? What is a first time student?

Umm, I think that's supposed to mean the 'first time' competing at the Olympics for that specific skater, who also happened to be coached by Carroll.

It could also mean the student was Carroll's brand new student 'the first time', assuming the skater had left Carroll at a later point and eventually came back to him again, then becoming a "second time" student. ;)

Basically that he was the first to give them a real shot at the Olympics. He did it with Evan who was 4th 2006 (he won in 2010) and Mirai in 2010 was 4th at her first olympics.

^^^ And then he did it with Gracie, who was 4th at 2014 Olympics. She was an even newer student of Frank's -- Sept. or Oct. of 2013, IIRC.

2. It's not the same version at least. Evgenia's has violin as opposed to just piano, so it won't sound the exact same

Mirai's version has always been with the violin.

(Personally, what I love about Chopin is the usual light quickness but this piece is not light, quick, or on the piano).

Gracie was the opening keynote speaker for the high performance camp recently, otherwise, I've seen very little of her on social media. There have been two pictures of drinks/toasting pictures.

I am dying to know how Gracie is doing in practice - any info at all?

Evgenia has released her music choices for the season (see Russian ladies thread) Evgenia and Mirai will have the same SP this year... Pretty disappointed in evgenias teams decision since Mirai announced quite some time ago that she will keep the SP for this season... it will be hard for her to skate to the same program as the 2 time world champion and record holder.
The music cuts might be different.

TBH I didn't remember either way, I just read that in the Programs thread, and it has now been corrected.

i think people will appreciate them because its going to be a break from the atleast 8 skaters doing La La Land or 5 skaters doing Turandot :laugh:

I guess I don't envision that many elite ladies doing La La Land, especially after Ashley did her early announcement. Maybe dance or pairs.

When is Skate Detroit? I'd like to go if some big names will be there. Vincent will be; have any other names been announced?

Someone was already skating to LaLaLand even before Wagner announced that she is skating to that music.

Okay, thanks. But you can also say that about D10 in 2014, Goebel in 2002, Kwan in 1998, Bowman in 1988, Fratianne in 1976. Basically all of his Olympians, and maybe even more because I'm not sure if he's had others. It is strange wording.

I pointed out two of the many skaters Frank helped with this feat to clarify to your question. :rolleye:

Also, FWIW Ten was at the 2010 OG's where he placed 11th so he doesn't qualify.

Yes, Da Bin Choi. Your post predicted that this season, we'd need a break from seeing "at least 8." Really, I think "La La Land" is already kind of "last year" & likely not that appealing to younger female skaters.

If Da Bin keeps hers, then I can think of 4 La La Lands already. (One is a novice dance team). Eight does not seem like too great a stretch.

Da Bin switched to La La Land mid-season last year. Which explains why she had the jump start and why no one else was using it yet. Therefore, no. I expect this is the year. Just as Les Mis was the big film soundtrack in 2014.

Calm down Rabbit. Relax and take five deep breaths. Thank you so much for that remarkable clarification. And I gave you three other examples....???? What's your problem? Now open up and tell us how bad GG's practices are going...:rolleye:

Also, if Frank took him to the Olys in 2010, wouldn't that still make him a 'first time'? :rolleye: It sucks being the smallest fish in the smallest pond. But good luck with that, Rabbit. :rolleye:

Don't know who the novice team skating to "La La Land" but we already have Da Bin, Ashley, Madison/Evan and the Russian pairs Astakhova/Rogonov skating to it for next year. Heh, what's a few more. Saw the movie and can't even remember the music  Just as long as they don't go one after another like in Boston, felt like I saw many "I put a spell on you", "Feeling good", and "Romeo/Juliet" one right after another :drama: So far so good on that front!

Now let's not make assumptions about GG. I admit while I am no expert and I am not saying Gracie should hide but why in the world is she performing so much or doing speeches just putting more pressure on herself. High performance camp when the last we heard she was struggling with jumps and doing doubles at SOI. I do have hope in her and for her but maybe a bit of time just working on herself and her skating might be wise.
