2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Any news on Polina? How is she doing? Caroline "I am trying to get rid of the mule kick and become speedy gonzalez" Zhang?
 
hah I guess I should clarify what I was trying to say when I used "first time". I was meant Franks first season with Gracie and Mirai was with their respective Olympics showings. They were their first seasons with Frank so in an effort to be brief I used the phrase "first time". Haste makes waste I guess.

I think Miss Saigon will be a strong vehicle for Mirai. I love what Jeffrey made for her for Chopin - he seems to really "get" her and Satoko and Yu Na have pretty memorable programs to that music so I'm excited to see what they cook up.

Can't wait to see some actual competition soon! All this speculation and wonder about programs and training is starting to wear me out!

A good start; it will be interesting to see how this develops. One thing I've noticed about Starr is that she tends to tuck her head into her shoulders; either that, or she just has a short neck. I think it would be helpful if her bun was at the top of her head instead of at the nape; it would create a more vertical visual. Also, perhaps have the detailing of the dress be more of a strapless look instead of the high-neck effect.

Her hair is really thick, so I think the bun will always be low. This is last years dress, hopefully she'll have a new one before the JGP.


Starr is interesting in that she improves a great deal each season. Starting strong like this means that she'll work out most of the bugs early. After that she's pretty consistent aside from her new jumps. She's looking pretty good for the JGP. They may even consider giving her a challenger series after all.
 
Help!! I'm trying to get tickets to skate Detroit before it's too late, but the website is no help and when I call the rink, no one answers! Never been to a skating competition before. How much are tickets to the Saturday or Sunday events? Is there another number I can call?

How tall is Starr? I never realized how tiny she is. I love so much about her skating but, I hate to see these young skaters risking their bodies by attempting 3A's. Hasn't Med's meteoric rise to the top of the proven to everyone that they are not necessary to win a championship.

Don't you just show up to Skate Detroit and find a place to sit? Attendance is generally very low and there's no danger of being "too late".

The reverse.

Med & Zagitova's rise have shown that the younger athletes are going to need more than a backloaded program and triple-triple combination(s) in order to win.

I would say that last year's JGP proved that the U.S. ladies cannot remain behind in technical content. They are off the podium completely. Off every podium. Out of the final flight at Junior Worlds.

And the Broadmoor Open this year showed that last year's novices are going after the triple triples & willing to backload. It's going to take more.

Good for Starr.

Exactly. Starr and her team is looking at this from a long term perspective. At junior level there is already one skater that landed a clean 3A and 3 more that will attempt either 3A or 4S. She saw in person how Marin's perfect skates still lost against Alina's fully backloaded programs. I did the calculations. Only ladies with consistent 3As can dethrone either Zhenia and Alina.

Starr is taking a page from Nathan's handbook. Once you learn a jump, put it in your program. I would not be surprised if they were friends. They are pretty similar regarding how they approach competing. Specifically "challenge yourself."

A few of her friend are working on 4S as well. I think Karen, Mariah, and Tessa so are working on their 3A and are close to adding them into their programs. Naturally Mirai has hers and will attempt as well. This may be the start of the age of triple Axel.

We'll have to see how things go at Nationals. Starr is staying in Juniors isn't she? The Ladies are so deep now, that maybe they feel like they need a 3A to stand out. Still, I think that Karen Chen, Mariah Bell, and Ashley Wagner would be the ladies I'd send if you asked me today......I'm sure there are several skaters who going to go for more than they ever have before. That's why I'm so excited for the season begin.

Reaaaallly small. She's 16 and shorter than every skater! I'm guessing around 4ft 9 or 10.

Starr will be junior international, senior domestically. Just like Polina in 2014, she's senior eligible. Although Starr must make the JGPF to prove that she's worthy of going to the Olympics in the first place. I've learned the hard way not to underestimate her. So I'm not counting her out, although my picks for the Olympics are: Ashley, Karen, and Mirai sub Mariah. Jury's out on Gracie. Tessa has some potential. Bradie is looking really strong!

It's going to be a great season!

Wow, sixteen already?! I feel like her viral program to "Whip My Hair" just came out yesterday! :laugh:

I never thought I'd see the day where I'd be saying this, but I really like the over the boot tights for Starr! They accentuate her lines, which is helpful for shorter skaters. I supppse its similar to why we've seen other shorter skaters wear beige skates, because they add the illusion of extra height. :yes:
 
Does anyone have any idea if Skate Detroit will be broadcast anywhere? Isn't that the first time we'll get a look at the skaters new programs?
 
Results from the LA open were interesting. Starr, Kaitlyn and Vivian competed as seniors. Karen Chen competed in the short only. Starr came surprisingly close to Karen in the short; she won the competition, but Kaitlyn edged her in the free. Can't help but be worried for Vivian.

Dying to see the protocols of course.
