2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Results from the LA open were interesting. Starr, Kaitlyn and Vivian competed as seniors. Karen Chen competed in the short only. Starr came surprisingly close to Karen in the short; she won the competition, but Kaitlyn edged her in the free. Can't help but be worried for Vivian.

Dying to see the protocols of course.

My best guess was that her 3Ts were < and she had an edge call. Maybe Zayaked the 2A if the 3A was <<. I think the 3S+3T was ok, though.

As for Kaitlyn, I'm dying to now her layout as well! A TES of 67 is amazing with a fall! Looking forward to seeing them both improve even more!

Oh Vivian... What's happened to you? My little sky high jumper. I wish I knew what kind of injury you had so I knew how you could get better.

Sigh... And this is why we can't have nice things.

Right!! I'm not paying $45 to watch an event like this. Maybe if I was in town I'd go to see it live but, when we can all watch National, Worlds, and The Olympics for free.......I won't be paying for Skate Detroit. I will wait to hear about from GS members. Thanks for the information, Sabinfire..

I'm dying to see Mirai's LP but $25 to see her mark her program? No thanks. Though I will hate it if she lands that 3A and I can never see it.... If Gracie and a few other big names were going I'd be sorely tempted.

Do you mean Vivian Le? I always wondered what happened to her. She was a very promising Junior, wasn't she?

She was injured most of last season. Let's give her time. Remember how long it took Osmond to come back from injury.

Look, I'm just happy that she's back. For some reason, I thought she was burnt out and had retired.

Yes. I was In Awe of the high of her jumps. After she got injured last season I was devastated. I'm just nervous this is more serious than I thought.

I'll give her all the time she needs. She has so much talent! Maybe she needs to adjust to being off ice for so long. I'm just nervous.

Yeah...I get ya and agree myself. I'd bet that Detroit Figure Skating Club is counting on a few friends and or family members to pony up to watch skaters they know compete. Even if only a handful do it then maybe they can use that $$ to offset some of the costs associated with the event. Their goal is probably to preserve the existence of the club and not to grow the sport.

If USFSA saw a benefit in helping to cover/cut costs maybe we'd get a free feed but judging on what I've seen of this event in the past and USFSA past actions I doubt they are looking to invest in it. Still...considering it's the slow season I personally think if they stepped in and offered a free video feed via Ice Network it would be beneficial. A chance to show off Ice Network free of charge and more importantly expose the younger talent and give them a bigger platform to make a name for themselves.

I for one am fine with USFS using their dollars to support skaters in other ways (as opposed to subsidizing the cost of Skate Detroit streaming).

Such as sending skaters to the Asian Open for the first time in memory -- where they will have a chance to work toward making a name for themselves on an international stage.

I am excited for the four ladies who will compete in Hong Kong in August: Audrey Shin, Hanna Harrell, Alysa Liu, and Stephanie Ciarochi.

They all had good results at the Broadmoor Open and/or Aerial Challenge.
I think it's great that they promptly are being rewarded with an international assignment.

I appreciate also that USFS already stepped up and streamed the Aerial Team Challenge, after Aerial Challenge itself could not live up to its promise to provide streaming.

Now let's not make assumptions about GG. I admit while I am no expert and I am not saying Gracie should hide but why in the world is she performing so much or doing speeches just putting more pressure on herself. High performance camp when the last we heard she was struggling with jumps and doing doubles at SOI. I do have hope in her and for her but maybe a bit of time just working on herself and her skating might be wise.

Reality check on your own assumptions re Gracie:

- She recently gave one speech. AFAIK, only one (singular).
And it was at a USFS camp. I do not understand finding fault with her for giving back to skaters on the rise.
And I bet she herself in turn found inspiration in working with them.

- And performing "so much"??? I do not think she has performed in a show since the not-very-long SOI tour (only seven shows in entirety) ended in May??

Meanwhile, Ashley too performed in all seven SOI shows, and Karen performed in six of the seven.

Gracie is scheduled for one show at Sun Valley, as is Ashley. Karen's Sun Valley show already has take place.

... Ting cui is I think another upcoming talent. ...

Random throwback to a post-Nats interview with Ting Cui (and Ryan Dunk):

Stumbled upon it today via an old tweet from Audrey Weisiger.

Would it by any chance be cheaper to tape the competition & then send the tape to Ice Network as Glacier Falls usually does?

I am excited about the Asian Open invitations. Last year Marin and the top Korean junior & novice ladies were all there. It should give this group of U.S. girls some great competition and a real look at the international field.

Is everything okay with Karen? Anyone know why she withdrew?

Don't have an answer to your question.

But as another consideration, I will add:

IIRC, crzesk8dad has told us in the past that it is possible for Glacier Falls FSC to provide the competition video files to IN *because* the official vendor for videography hired by GFFSC gives its permission.

I have no idea whether ProEventPhoto would be willing to give such permission to DSC regarding Skate Detroit video files ... or whether any discussion along these lines even has taken place.

(Glacier Falls does not use ProEventPhoto.)

Just a guess, but it could very well have been a planned withdrawal from the FS??

Okay, so she had just planned to skate the SP there. Feeling more relieved now. Whenever I see WD next to someone's name, my first thought is always: oh no, injury. :(

how did Karen skated? score of 57 seem a little low for a domestic event. Does she have a new SP program?

She's fine. Seniors use summer comps to test out their new programs. She probably got it choreographed a few weeks ago and use this competition just to test it out. Her score is low because it takes skaters months to get used to the new layout. It's a lot to remember and still get the timing of the jumps. The score is fine. She'll either debut in another summer comp or wait to debut he FP in JO.

Just want to be crystal-clear to xeyra that my post above was only a *guess* (with two question marks) that her withdrawal was planned.

Which I offered as an alternative *possibility* that would not signal injury.

The scenario spelled out by frida is basically what I was guessing.

i'm sure someone will video it and it will end up on youtube. lets hope at least!

I read elsewhere that someone said this was her team's strategy to just skate the SP there, and since you posed a similar possibility, I kind of thought it must be that, then, and since no one in this thread seemed to raise an alarm towards that WD, I felt content to assume it was probably not due to any injury.

No confirmation either way, though, I take it.
