2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Skating conservative will not do any good for new skaters like Tessa Hong especially in the olympic season. I truly believe that with the traditional layout, a hit skate from Tessa will not outscore a semi-hit skate from the top American ladies. Their PCS gap is just too big right now so she needs to separate her self from them. This is a high risk high reward strategy and Im sure Frank and his team knows this

If she makes the World/Olympic team, she probably would need to take the risk. However, the bar is lower to get the last spot on the US team, such that most skaters who skate two clean programs with 3/7 clean triples could medal.

How have the US Ladies looked over the summer? I have been impressed Karen but I haven't really seen anyone else that screams I'm ready to be an Olympian. Certainly not Gracie.

Not a lot to see over the summer. Their busy training, getting choreography, and doing shows. Social media has been quiet. We'll see Mariah, Mirai, and Karen debut programs in the coming months. Ashley will wait like always. Gracie may do Golden West again, but we'll see. I have seen Gracie is training hard at Colorado Springs. It seems promising.

I am very happy to read that last bit. I really want Gracie to skate well this season. I'd hate to see her implode after spending so much of her life on the ice. I think she and Carly are closer than we think. Gracie had a noticeable dip in her skating after Carly stopped skating at the end of 2016 season.

For those in the know -- Does Tom Z and Marina have some sort of training arrangement this summer? Some of Tom Z's skaters (Mirai Nagasu and Juvenille medalist Elise Freezer) are in Canton right now and frida80 just mentioned that Gracie has been training in Coloraldo (though that might be due to her participation in the ISP camp).

Probably there do the Olympic training center. Everyone seems to go at some point. Adam, Jason, Nathan, and I think Karen were there at some point.

Both Mirai and Elise are competing in Skate Detroit this weekend. They're both early for some reason. But if they're both working with Marina, then that's a good idea.

I believe it was mentioned in the Tom Z article. People were making comments along those lines after it came out. (If correct, I think it's a good idea. He has what she doesn't have--jump technique expertise. She has what he doesn't have--artistry, choreography, an understanding of the music, and a commitment to the artistic integrity of the programs). An overall win for their athletes. I think team U.S.A. really saw the benefits from this kind of collaboration last year.

Oh yeah -- Tom's working with Patrick Chan on his 4F, right? I agree it makes sense.

Gracie has been doing run thrus of her new programs for a while, maybe not with all the hardware but she knows how to work hard and her new coach is a strategist. All know the amount of work it takes to make it on Olympic team. Marina is no dummy.

I think everyone should let go of old Gracie, that girl doesn't exist. The new skater is a woman, in a new body and with experience. Let's give her a chance to be who she is now.

I think it is good for US ladies to be silent on social media now. Focus.

I agree. Hopefully Gracie can skate with joy this season. Expectations are lower for her now than ever before in her senior career, so without that burden perhaps she can compete her best.

Like these choices for Gracie's music and hope she is practicing hard! I really want her to be ready for the Japan Open, which is in the beginning of October.

Elise Freezer medaled as a Juvenile last year. She is skating as an Intermediate this year.

Oops. Thanks for the correction! Her skating is quite impressive, which is probably why I moved her up a few levels.

I accidentally edited your post instead of replying. another oops.

During the 2010-2011 season, Gracie placed 6th at sectionals and as a result, did not make nationals. She was so determined to make nationals the following season that she won her only jgp assignment, nationals, and earned a silver at junior worlds. Even thought this past season has been more drastic, I can't help but draw parallels from the two seasons. I hope not making worlds will be enough motivation for her for the olympics, just as not making nationals did for her.

The bonus system has forced alot of young skaters to increase their technical content to remain competitive. As a result, you are now seeing bigger jumps at lower levels compared to what was the norm just a couple of years ago.

Because of her jump content, you may have thought she was a novice. Nope - top intermediates now do multiple triples and 3-2 combinations.

I remember a few years ago when it was a big deal that tiny Karen Chen had a 3Lz as a novice! Elise, as far as performance, connection to the audience and just pure spark, reminds me of tiny Karen.

Last year Emily Zhang (Richmond) had a triple lutz as an Intermediate. She bombed her short, had a great long (#1) so wound up taking the Intermediate Silver.

My question is what is the dfference in terms of jumps between Novices and Juniors? I really don't know anymore.

Thanks for the update Frida!

How is tiny Vivian Le looking this year? I don't remember where I saw her but, I liked her and thought she'd have a bright future. Also, is Emily Chan still actively skating? I know she's had a rough time of late but, at 19, she's still young enough to make a comeback.

Not much anymore. They now allow triple triples in novice so more girls are doing them there. Last year there were some girls like Alyssa and Audrey doing 3Lz+3T combos. But they under rotated a lot. The winners at least had basic triple triples, but all of them had all triple jumps solid. This year in juniors I think the top girls will have 3F+3T combos , because the solo jump is a lutz.
