2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Maybe a silly question that doesn't matter, but: was it ever explained why at US nationals only the top 5 after the sp skated in the final free skate group? Mariah had been 6th after the sp and had to skate in the second-to-last group.

There were 19 skaters, so the groups were 4-5-5-5.
 
Any word on what Ashley's new project is? In her Insta story she said she was working on something and then the next day posted a picture of her on the ice with Sarah Kawahara. The caption to the photo is "Such an honor to work with skating history yesterday! Thank you @sarahkawahara1 for the experience!"

If it was just for a day of work I can't imagine she's got a new competitive program but I did wonder if USFS would put some pressure on to have at least one new program this year.

I've always thought of Kawahara as more of an exhibition choreographer but then again I really loved this program she did for Bebe Liang back in the day:

Not one to really dig into this stuff but Wagner did issue a cryptic tweet about "drama" a couple of days ago, whatever that means.

I had the impression that the 5-5 split of the final 2 groups at US Nationals was done for TV purposes...sometimes they do 12 (6/6) and other times they do 10 (5/5)...don't recall if final two groups have ever been split unevenly or not, but they typically massage the scheduling and the grouping for TV, especially the free skates.

It's in the rules. 19 gets grouping like that.
 
Congrats to Emmy Ma for her bronze at her first ever JGP event!

No falls across either program - which is good as far as the US ladies go. Let's hope she keeps working hard on her easier triples and gets a 3-3 for next year. Her 3Lz and 3F are clean, so she's got to have a 3S and 3T inside of her, right?

First JGP medal in two years, since Vivian Le and just as Vivian was a "wow" technically (humongous Lutz!) Emmy was "wow" artistically - very graceful and musical skater! :clapper:
 
Two great skates from Emmy Ma! What a great example of what can still be possible if you skate within your ability and push the GOE. That's not to say she doesn't have room to grow or won't master the salchow and toe but right now, for this season with the three triples she does have, she's able to do quite a lot! Also really like her flying camel the position and way she gains speed at the end is a nice highlight.

The second loop and the second double axel were < so she still has some scoring potential to max out here.

Would love to see softer knees throughout but really nice presentation. I wonder if this medal means she'll get named to Poland or Italy...

Also since it's not mentioned here yet, Mirai has been named as Gracie's replacement for Japan Open. I'm glad for Mirai I know she wanted more chances to skate before the grand prix and while it's not a full competition I'm glad she's guaranteed at least one more chance to perform Miss Saigon before she has to take it to Moscow for the opener.

I thinks she does. She just needs time to master them. She did a fantastic job! I'm really impressed how she kept her nerves in check and delivered that program. It helped that last year she was in a similar position. She skated a outstanding SP and had to skate last after more technically advance skates. She lost focus and underrotated and downgraded a lot of jumps. This time she kept her head and focused on skating clean. It was wonderful to see.

Now can we stop the doom and gloom about US juniors?

Thanks for compiling this list. It looks like this years juniors have improved over last years. The top four have all out-score everyone except for the top scoring junior last year. It's heartening to see. I hope after some more experience all of these ladies ca start to make a dent in standings.
 
Wow, Emmy caught my eye at this year's Nationals, so happy for her to medal. I hope she will up her technical content soon. She has some Michelle in her, can't wait to see her growing artistically!

She only underrotated 2 jumps, I would not count that as "a lot" but okay...

Super exciting! hopefully she will recieve a second gp! Emmy has rlly nice jump technique and beautiful spins. I hope she will be able to get the 3-3 to really compete for gold or silver.
