2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Wow, Emmy caught my eye at this year's Nationals, so happy for her to medal. I hope she will up her technical content soon. She has some Michelle in her, can't wait to see her growing artistically!

For some reason I thought Emmy Ma was from Korea. Is she Korean but skates for the US?

I read somewhere that one reason why Starr may be blooming a bit later is because she started out in the ISI track rather than the USFS one and started becoming more "serious" about competition relatively recently. Apparently, Jason Brown also started in the ISI track and some say it shows in their showsmanship and want to do programs they like. I'm not saying ISI skaters are less competitive or aren't capable of the skills necessary to be competitive in the USFS track, but I do think the philosophy is a bit different.
Starr never competed ISI or USFSA until age 12. At age 12 she took the Juvenile test and there began her skating career. Her double axel came at age 12 and every jump proceeded thereafter. She only skated two hours a day five days a week up until senior level. Due to her small stature, ice time was limited to prevent injury. She is now 16 and 80lbs.

Super exciting! hopefully she will recieve a second gp! Emmy has rlly nice jump technique and beautiful spins. I hope she will be able to get the 3-3 to really compete for gold or silver.

Let's hope so. I'd hate to see her become another Emily Chan a beautiful skater who unfortunately never mastered the harder jumps and has been left behind.

I thought Whip My Hair was an ISI competition?

I had no idea Starr was that small. Kristi Yamaguchi was, and is, very tiny and maybe Starr will follow in her footsteps.

Congrats to Emmy Ma for her bronze at her first ever JGP event!

No falls across either program - which is good as far as the US ladies go. Let's hope she keeps working hard on her easier triples and gets a 3-3 for next year. Her 3Lz and 3F are clean, so she's got to have a 3S and 3T inside of her, right?

Not necessarily so. Lutz, flip and toe loops are all "toe" jumps. Sal, loop, and axel are all "edge" jump. Just because you can do the "tough" toe jumps does not mean you can do the "easy" edge jumps.

^thanks for the video SkaterX!!

The cut is pretty much identical but the style of Evgenia's and the added affects is vintage Evgenia. Mirai's is much more a North American take I'd say. I think they'll stand out as very different from each other. I wouldn't want to be the skater that has to risk comparisons to Evgenia who continues to look unstoppable, but fortunately this looks and feels pretty different to me.

I was upset initially. But I got over it. im glad Mirai stuck to her guns and stuck with her SP. It's sublime.

Updates from Mid-Atlantics:

Haley Beavers withdrew, per the Senior Ladies SP score sheet from last night.

Today Lynn Rutherford  tweeted the full list of SP scores:

FS is tonight.

Thanks! I'm very excited to see videos...... is anyone there planning on posting videos?

General thoughts, not specific to Senior Ladies SP (which I did not attend):

Thanks to our friend Upnights  :thank:, some videos are on Instagram. (I have not yet viewed them ... I think they are partial videos -- and it's great to have them.)

FWIW, Dave Lease was at the Senior Pairs FS this afternoon.
I do not know whether he was at the Ladies SP or whether he will be at the Ladies FS.
I also do not know whether he recorded any videos, and I have not checked any TSL social media.

As mentioned, @LynnRutherford has been tweeting on site.
And Instagramming for @icenetwork.
I would not expect any full-length videos from her, but her reporting always is much appreciated.

Is anyone else bummed out that Evgenia and Mirai have the same SP music? Or is it just me?

A bit. It is too early to know anything but we can all make some guesses and I kinda feel like Mirai might end up in the Olympic team. She already replaced Gracie on Japan Open and she will compete against Mariah in their GP assignments. If she manages to have some success at these events she will be more reliable than any other choice for the 3rd spot I guess.

In that case, I don't know what to feel about two Olympic contenders skating to the same music. I think Mirai shouldn't care but it still is a bit undesirable to have the same music with the top contender.
