2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

It's good to see her have all the content in the programs. She could certainly find herself on the Olympic team nailing this sort of layout, even without a 3-3.

She really has improved since her first event. Her Lutz was close and I think once she's back in "competitive' shape, she'll be fine. Her 2axel 3toe looked good and hopefully she'll add a 3-3 as the season progresses. I will say this much, this was a drastic improvement, especially her speed across the ice, over her event just weeks ago. I wish her the best as she's a local star here in Central Ca. Did she win the event?

I have not noticed any articles in the press about Emmy Ma's medaling on a JGP circuit. This has been the first American ladies' medal in a long time and Emmy's skating was beautiful but there has not been a single word published on IceNetwork about her great performance!

I'm not sure about Ice Network but, the members of GS have talked about in the JGP event forum.

To be fair to IceNetwork: you apparently overlooked IN's mentions of Emmy.

IN's JGP coverage typically is concise, but Emmy was given her due.
Even JGP gold winners from the U.S. typically get only a very few sentences in IN's coverage of JGP results (although their names are in the headlines of recap articles).

SP:
American Emmy Ma opened her first JGP event with a bang, scoring 59.92 points to place third in the segment. Teammate Ashley Lin sits in eighth with 54.57 points.

Panenkova earns top ladies honor; American Ma takes bronze in debut
Excerpt:
Team USA's Emmy Ma capped her JGP debut with a bronze medal, registering 172.62 total points to fend off Russia's Alisa Fedichkina, who finished fourth with a score of 171.98.
American Ashley Lin achieved new personal-best scores for both the free skate (106.66 points) and overall total (161.23) to place sixth in the final standings.

Plus new today: Emmy got one vote from an IN contributor in this season's predictions of ladies "breakout" stars.

Junior ladies from the United States don't typically garner the same level of attention as their Russian or Japanese peers, but, nevertheless, Emmy Ma caught my eye during the 2017 Glacier Falls Classic and after her short program at the Junior Grand Prix in Latvia. She possesses a relatively mature performing style and a good quality to her skating, skills that allow her to stand out on the junior circuit. She'll become all the more dangerous once she masters her jumps.

Bradie got two votes.
Other U.S. ladies who got one vote: Mariah, Tessa, Starr, Mirai.

Closing the loop on Mid-Atlantics:

Hannah Miller was the winner.

Lynn Rutherford tweeted the list of overall scores:

And did anyone else notice the comment by Lynn Rutherford in this article. She states that Bradie Tennell got the TBA spot for Skate America. I know we've been speculating that since Bradie went to Champs camp, but I haven't seen an official announcement yet. It also isn't on the ISU site .

A bit. It is too early to know anything but we can all make some guesses and I kinda feel like Mirai might end up in the Olympic team. She already replaced Gracie on Japan Open and she will compete against Mariah in their GP assignments. If she manages to have some success at these events she will be more reliable than any other choice for the 3rd spot I guess.

In that case, I don't know what to feel about two Olympic contenders skating to the same music. I think Mirai shouldn't care but it still is a bit undesirable to have the same music with the top contender.

In Michelle's last Oly, weren't she and Irina scheduled to use the same SP music, Totentanz, and I didn't think it was a good choice for Michelle.

I am glad to see the progress she made in the past two months. At this speed, she will be a contender for an Olympic spot. Is she taking a year off from school of the Olympic year?

LP from Polina in which she's going for those jumps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0uVCaCYitE&feature=youtu.be

She's obviously not at 100% yet, but she's progressed. I'm feeling optimistic.

I'd love to know the story behind that. It is very odd for two top skaters to pick such a random piece to skate to in the same season. I agree with you that the music was far too heavy for Michelle; Irina could just power through the music without having to worry about detail or nuance.

No, I don't think there has been an official announcement, but someone--I think, Sylvia--on FSU said that Bradie's spot at SA was confirmed. Not anyone in the other three disciplines though.

Sounds like Polina is taking classes this Fall, per this Ice Network article (from several months ago, but I saw Polina making dorm decorations on her Instagram Live this week, so I assume it's still the plan): http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2017/05/11/229654430/the-inside-edge-edmunds-returns-following-layoff

"Edmunds plans to go to college full time for the first quarter in the fall and then take the winter off -- in the event she's busy with trips to San Jose for the U.S. championships and, potentially, PyeongChang, site of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games."

Protocols for the St. Moritz competition. http://www.stmoritzisc.org/SkStm17/2017SkateStMoritzIJSEvents/index.html

Interesting to see what content Polina went for in the short program, since she went for the lutz and flip in the lp (in short, 3S for solo jump. What was her planned combo in the short-first jump in combo was loop?).

The combo was likely in the 3S (maybe a 3S-3T or 3S-2T) but she fell on the jump, so they just assigned the Combo to the Loop.

180?!?!?!?! :drama:

Alyssa is on a whole other level! She's not eligible for the JGP for another 2 years! What's her score going to be like when she actually gets there?!

Holy crap! Looking at the protocol, she's got two 3-3s in the second half! It's difficult to tell from so far away, but I do hope she is getting the rotations like the protocol claims and it's not national judges going easy. That'll do no one any good in the long run.

Her coach is Laura Lipetsky, 9th place finisher at 1995 Nationals. (some classic 90s nostalgia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDunhTiN92o)

I've never heard of her, but I'm glad she's taking a competitive approach.

FWIW, Alysa also placed second at the Glacier Falls Summer Classic in the junior ladies division, losing to Audrey Shin. No protocols, unfortunately.

Which led me down a further rabbit hole - Audrey and Alysa skated against one another in June at the SoCal Interclub Championships, Audrey won the SP, but Alysa won the LP by a big enough margin to win overall.

All of this was probably discussed months ago  but I'm only discovering this cute little rivalry now.

She competed in Advanced Novices at the Asian Open and placed second overall. The rotations are an issue, and I'm sure she knows it & is working on them. (The U.S. judges are encouraging her to work on them. URs are the reason she dropped from 1st to 4th between the short and long program last year at Novice Nationals).

Here is her protocol at the Asian Open:
http://www.hksu.org/event/aofst2017/aofst2017_AdvancedNoviceGirls_FS_Scores.pdf

Both triple triples were URed and downgraded, but she came away with a silver nonetheless.

She's a wonderful natural performer and going for the tough stuff. Which is good, because her international competition is too.

Is anyone else bummed out that Evgenia and Mirai have the same SP music? Or is it just me?

It was a bad decision for Mirai to keep the program, not just because of Evgenia, but because it doesn't suit her to begin with. She has never shown an ability to emote really well to this kind of music and in any case the choreography of the program is totally ineffective, the jumps and spins and footwork really do nothing to work with the music and there are no special details. The program will sadly not create a magical "Olympic moment" for her and especially now in comparison to Evgenia, the lesser skating skills and fluidity of Mirai are just going to make her look more sluggish in this program.

Mirai has Olympic podium potential with her 3Axel this season, but she can say goodbye to it if the PCS do not come through. This isn't just bad for her personally but also for the U.S. team as a whole; Evgenia is likely going to skate SP of the team event and Mirai with a working 3Axel would be the best choice to send to the Olympic Team SP, yet at the same time it will now be easy for the judges to mark her down on PCS with the direct comparison. If USFSA is serious about trying to win Gold in the Team event, and if Mirai herself wants to get competitive scores, then the program needs to be changed.

URs are an issue but not a completely consistent one, so far this year out of the four competitions i have seen her 2/4 lp with totally clean protocol. She has also already made huge strides in this area, she is underrotating a LOT less than last year. She grew a little so I hope this means that the more she grows the less underrotations.
