2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

That wasn't the point I was making about the Mills programs. The point was that out of respect or disgust (whichever it is) you just don't reuse those programs after a "falling out."

I didn't know they had a falling out. For some reason I thought it had to do with her move to Raf. Did something happen between Ashley and Phillip?

Please look at my reply to pearly two posts above your last one. Also, I stated in my original post #1474 they had a falling out.

I did read that post. For some reason, I thought her switch to Shae Lynn had to do with her move to Raf and the retirement of her old coach. I thought it was more about logistics than anything else. Does that make sense?

I respect her decision, but I do wonder how hard it would be for her to relearn one of her previous LPs. Her Samson and Delilah and Black Swan programs were both good, and using one would at least be a bit of a change for fans and judges.

Ashley was asked about Black Swan and said that the program no longer meets the FS requirments. She didn't go into any detail though.

No. Mills resigned a week after WTT in March 2013 and she was still going to be training with Nicks, in the summer of that year Raf came into the picture.

Wow, this is new news to me. Ashley's Black Swan was a milestone program for her. I loved that program and her Pollock SP. Up to that point, I thought that was the best she had ever looked.

I googled it a little bit and here is Ashley explaining what happened. Basically, she wanted to work with another choreographer for a change (Shae-Lynn) and he felt he couldn't work on someone else's program. Ashley's being quite diplomatic about it here: https://youtu.be/hdFwnh-JB5o?t=739

Also explains how and when Nicks broke the news to her, this is really a good piece.

What does that mean, the Black Swan no longer meets free skate requirements? Has skating really become THAT restrictive?

There have likely been rule changes to the step sequence/spins/GOE that might have made the elements she did in that program, i.e. her step/spins not work for the 2017-2018 season.

Somebody who is more knowledgeable about ISU technical rules can probably explain it better than me, but that's the gist of it.

That makes sense since the program is 5 years old.

Complacency? Have you listened to any of Ashley's interviews recently, or read any? If you had, or paid attention, you'd know she's anything but complacent. She knows what her challenges are. She and her team are working on them.

What follows is more of a general comment I have, not specific to Wagner per se:

Personally, I'd go not by what the skaters say, but what they DO - i.e., what we see on the ice.

For example -

- Nagasu is DOING (attempting) the 3A. Not just words, but action.
- From this thread, sounds like a couple of up-and-comers have also made an impression through (pre-season) action on the ice.
- And, Wagner herself has demonstrated through action on the ice before - in 2012 when most thought she was on the outs - and again in 2015, when the same thought prevailed post-Sochi.

Ashley is keeping Moulin imo because she doesn't have or want to spend a lot of money on a new program. lol

Did you watch the making of La La Land video? She already spent all that time (money) with the choreographer so I know that's not the reason.

Please tell me you are trying to be funny since everyone knew she had all new choreography with La La Land.:sarcasm:

Basically Ashely repeats both her sp and lp is puzzling. Has she skated her competitive programs in any competition yet? Does she have a senior B before her GP event? I don't buy that she wants to save money for the Olympic year, and possibly her last competitive season.

Exactly. I think that's why she's been quiet, not "explaining" about her musical and program choices. She's working. When she brings it onto the ice, that's time enough for us to see.

But I am not going to sit silent while some people malign her with their words, when they don't know what they're talking about. We don't know her reasons for her choices, but I'm sure they're good ones. She knows her own mind.

Plus, I fully expect her to show us some brilliant skating, whether her programs are re-worked or reprised. Just as I expect from Yuzuru, Meagan / Eric, Kaetlyn Osmond, and Alexa / Chris. To name but a few. :)

Mirai posted a video in Instagram stories today that shows her doing a triple axel, triple toe, double toe (unless my eyes deceive me ). I think it's great that she's showing she means business!

ETA: @frida80 kindly corrected me that it was a double axel triple toe double toe combo, but still it looked huge!

UGH Ashley she is my favorite women's skater ever but this is just silly three times is TOO MUCH. Added in a sp repeat...SMH. She did two new programs last year so we know she is capable of still learning. At the very least she should have took her hand clap stars on ice program and worked it into a new sp. I really have my doubts about how successful all these repeats will be against new fresh programs from the very smal number of skaters who pushed themselves to learn new programs.

In fairness to Ashley, the "Moulin Rouge" program for the 2014-2015 season was dramatically different from the 2015-2016 season - so much so that it was essentially two different programs only with the same music. Even from the short instagram clip of her working on the program with Beijing Schwimmer, you can already tell the choreography is different from the last time she performed it in 2016 (assuming she carries it over from the dance floor onto the ice). I love the music cuts - its one of the best edits I've ever heard in figure skating and Ashley really "gets" the music/concept and sells it (I still get goosebumps when I watch her 2015 GPF and 2016 Words performances of the program). I think she will continue to garner high PCS scores because she's absolutely spellbinding to this music when she's "on".
