It could just be the camera angle...but this rink looks tiny. It looked like Ashley was moving slow and Karen didn't have enough room for her usual speed.

Thanks for posting that! Her flutz is really obvious from this angle; at no point is she on the outside edge before the take-off. I'm not sure how that isn't credited as a flip attempt.

On the other hand, Karen's flip has improved so much! You can see her takeoff edge quite well from the video too.

Karens lutz is usually very stable, I am wondering if she is trying to make the jump lower so she can tag on the triple toe without an UR. Glad she is working on it and her flip is looking good.

I'm thinking she's making a technique change as well. She lost a lot of points because she missed her combo and fell on her 2nd lutz. I hope Japan Open is better.

As you may know, Polina was injured for the past year or so with a bone bruise, and is only getting back into competition mode. She's also taller and more filled out, at 19. I don't think she's in the conversation for the Olympics at this point, but you never know. Again, she is only 19, so I wouldn't write her off yet.

True. At 19, she could skip these games and return in 2022 and still be younger than Ashley is now. We saw from her posts during the school year that that's where she was focused and I think she'll be a late season surprise and be back in shape by the time Nationals rolls around. She has always done well at Nationals and with them being in her home town........ I still have hope.

So, I watched for the new choreo from Benji, having seen it several times on the floor, not on ice, in AW instagram. And I was like, hey! where is it? Finally, by the end, I realized that it's pretty new, and Ashley did say that she requires a lot of repetition to remember new choreo on the ice ... so it should come in the next few weeks. I'm at an iffy wifi location so Karen's vid hasn't come through for me yet.

It would be foolish to count her out. No she's not the bean pole of a 15 year old that she was at the last Olympics, but she is a gritty fighter and shows up to show what she's made of.

If she has the lutz, she probably doesn't need the 3-3 to make the team. She can do a 3-2 in the SP; it's unlikely that more than 2 or 3 contenders will do a clean SP with a 3-3 at Nationals. With a 2A-3T and a 2A-3S, all 7 her jumping passes will have a triple, giving her a GOE boost if she lands them. As she did in 2014, Polina will likely have an opportunity to take advantage of mistakes from others.
