Mikhail Kolyada

People just want to have a scapegoat, that's what. It's going to happen with all the russian skaters in COR, the same as it happens in Canada during SC, or the americans in SA.

I have to admit I haven't managed to watch Misha's skates on TV past TAT's first comments. Seriously, it's getting ridiculous at this point, those rumours about her, Misha and CSKA have to be true. Misha doesn't seem to be a big fan of her either but that's not really surprising.

What?

Sorry, I though they'd been brought up in this thread for some reason. TAT invited Misha to CSKA where she wanted to work with him personally, he declined, she wasn't happy to be turned down.

I really like the work Valentina is doing with him - the most important thing from COR he has to take with him is the fact that he's the only skater to get all lvl 4s in non-jumping elements in both programs. Also, he has the stamina for both programs. I can't see how he's not in the right track, really. Valentina is the perfect coach for him at the moment, and I'd prefer him not to have the so-called CSKA bonus at this point.

Well, maybe his competitive qualities could use a little adjusting, he can give up too easily instead of fighting for every element. Not sure if another coach could fix that though.

Btw, TAT suggested that Misha should add another 4T to his LP. Yes, because he finds it so easy to skate the content he has now :rolleye: But that might just be her unhealthy obsession with quads talking.

I don't know about that. If he gave up so easily he wouldn't get all those lvl 4s, that's what really impressed me this weekend. But indeed he could fight more for those quads.

At this point, though, I don't know how much that quad sal is worth. He did get it round here and in Nepela, but compared to the lutz it doesn't have the mileage yet, we saw Misha landing the 4lz several times in practice, even at COR, maybe the idea of putting another 4t would be beneficial in the short term - but then he'd have to give up a 3lz, and add a double axel in the program, losing BV. But he's not trying to go the path of least resistance.

Replacing the 4S with a 4T I can understand, but not adding another one on top of what's already there.

I'm gonna have to take TAT's side on this because she knows how to polish and make a champion. Regardless of whether his PCS was too high or not, I hope it at least convinces him that he should be fighting for titles against the top men. I went back and watched my first Mikhail performance: 2016 Worlds. I was so excited when I saw his free. I thought, this must be the second coming of Kulik! His jumps and and flow were already world class. His landing position was to die for. I thought he was a diamond in the rough. Package him correctly and rid him of some cheesiness and I could see this guy fighting for gold medals.

I have been disappointed in the years since. Kulik was still rough around the edges in 1996-98 but you could see that while TAT remembered the fact that he was young and didn't saddle him with heavy music, she challenged him and elevated his package with her choreography and music choices. Mikhail seems like he could use a Nathan or a Yuzu at the same rink to push him as a competitor. I would love to see him display some more mental toughness but I would also like his coach or choreographer to come up with something better than his free program. And if they insist on that free then push him to completely commit to the performance. Does this guy have any idea that he could be spellbinding? I want to see more work that challenges him like his short instead of charm based choreography like his free.

Well, I do think he needs to commit more to the program, that's for sure, but I see it as a big improvement from years past, and to be quite honest, I'm biased, I know, but he has a good set of programs, maybe not to challenge the top men, but on an off day for Javi, he could even get the gold in Euros - but that's another matter. Misha and Valentina need to think about how much is worth having the three different quads in the free, because sincerely, even having two 3lz is not worth at the moment, he already had trouble with the jump more than once this year.

In regards to what TAT can do or not, eh, I don't know how much she can package a skater now, and her ideas about the quads are a bit out of this world, especially for Misha. I think she would like to be the one to hone him to a possible success, when all the hard work was already done, because let's be real, he has the jumps, he just has to learn how to land them, which is not the case for other skaters.

See, a lot of people hate his SP and think the LP suits him much better. You can never satisfy everyone. Elvis was Misha's idea, he wanted to skate to it. Two programs like his SP woud have been too much for him to handle. And I think that on top of the upped tech there was only so much physical and mental energy he could spare for challenging choreography. A lot of people are simply going back to their old programs this season to make it easier for themselves, Misha didn't have that option.

As to fully commiting to his performance - Lambiel talked about this in his post CoR interview. He said that he can see that Misha has to think about his every movement (first Lambiel gives Misha a step sequence that requires utmost concentration, and then he expresses concern that Misha is concentrating too hard, heh). Once Misha doesn't have to think about every movement, it'll be easier for him to commit to his performance.

As for having someone in the rink to challenge him - the best they could manage so far is Aliev.

I think he simply runs out of energy by then. He said in his interview it was harder to concentrate at that point, but he expected it to get easier as the season progresses. At least they have moved the last combo away from it now. And they can always take out the 4S if they decide it isn't working, Misha said they might make changes closer to the main competitions.

Yeah, maybe it's lack of energy, really, for someone that didn't even had a quad in the second half of the prorgam, nor more than two in the program, he's dealt alright with it this season so far, some times a lot better than others, but he had two FS over 180+ in a month, which were numbers he fought hard to get last season. Also, I think these quads, lz and sal, are going to become a lot more secure in the next season, or the one after that - he did struggle with the 4t at the start, even last season there were some mishaps, but now it did become a good jump for him.

After reading comments here on GS and in Russian, I can say one thing with certainty – Mika has arrived! That vitriol & outrage!
One part of me wishing the judges gave him 3-4 points less PCS as the placings would not be affected but outrage would be lesser (would it?) but knowing well that the same thing will happen at every GP event for home skaters, why not?
In the end all that matters to me is that Mika looked happy after his skate and we know why. He didn’t think of medals & placings he was satisfied that he fought for each element, he didn’t pop any jumps (both 3As –yes!!), he didn’t give up on the performance and had stamina to skate through the second part better than the first. Could he had done better –yes he could. But it is only beginning of the season and if he was able to skate perfectly now I would be seriously worried how he could maintain the same top condition till February.

Has anyone got a link to a press conference after the LP? Would appreciate it.

TAT used to be all the things you say about her but alas not anymore. She was invested heavily in Maxim Kovtun but I don't think he gained either any polish or champion character from that association.
Her commentary on Mika skating I find outrageous. Did she change a citizenship just lately? Or may be just lost any common decency.
You go Mika and don't listen to any 'experts' !!!:luv17:

I think it could be something as simple as she wanting to ride on his coattails. Not that he's the sole hope of skating in Russia, but if she's so invested on him, she obviously know what he can produce evetually - and if he ever came to a big medal under her tutelage, she would be the one to bring that kind of attention to the Russian men, wouldn't it?

I was thinking that too, but I'm not sure Kovtun is a very teachable student. I once read that he even ignored Mishin's jump advice on his hunched over salchow.

Same was with Adelina who was I believe very diligent student. The truth is TAT was great in her time but coaching requires full commitment she no longer able to give due to her age - no disrespect. Her talents nowadays alas are employed mostly in intrigues & gossip. And with Mika anyone can see it's become a personal issue...
