Small Gestures that Became Iconic

Post skating gestures:

Brian Boitano looking up @ the end of his "Napoleon" free skate in Calgary, 1988

Todd putting his World Gold Medal on his mom - 1996

Rudy in the K&C @ 1996 US Nationals

Midori Ito's reaction just after she finished her Olympic free skate in Calgary - 1988.

from the top of my head...

Daisuke Takahashi's programs were for me a kind of celebration of those little gestures that spoke out the music and emotion louder than words - 'Eye' by Koba SP in 2009/2010 season, Elvis SP (2013/14 season, ditched after GPF) or his signatures like 'Blues for Klook' FS (2011/12 season) and cyber 'Swan Lake' FS (2007/08 season); I adored how his hands worked particularly in 'Eye' SP and 'Blues for Klook' FS.

Mao's stop in step sequence in SP to 'Bei Mir Bistu Shein' was such an eye-catching moment and the step sequence in 'Madame Butterfly' FS - it was all about the beauty of movement, little precious elements put together into compelling unity, still one of my favourite programs of Her

Out of so many moments in Jason's Riverdance, this is the most "iconic" for me:

Jason sweeps his arms to the audience and invites them along on his amazing step sequence

this program is such an iconic moment itself for me, its' hard to even pick just one particular gesture from it...The whole opening with hands and 'stretch' gives goose bumps and sets the vibe majestically.

I think that Giada Russo's 'Red violin' FS program (2015/16) was exquisite in terms of gesture holding attention.

Pechalat/Bourzat Flamenco OD ffrom 2007/08 season was magnificent - the intricacy of hands work and fan play from Nathalie - bravo!

I think that Virtue/Moir's goose lift from Mahler FD (2009/10 season) was a moment to remember, along with this ending choreographical spin and this moment of stop in the middle of the program.

The Italian in me also adds Carolina's start of her Bolero step sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbyZAEjFlU0 (at 3:35)
I agree that Giada Russo 2016 LP is a choregraphical masterpiece and I would also add that her SP that year was full of very nice moments (maybe, not iconic in the sense of the thread but very interesting nonetheless).

This magical moment in Mao's magnificent Sochi LP when she thrust her fists down before entering her final triple loop and then threw her right hand back in a dramatic gesture with a passionate facial expression after running a relentless gauntlet of jumps so gracefully:

The beginning and ending of Madame Butterfly in the World LP 2016:

Beginning: The long expectant stare full of sighs and the elegant glide to the right with the beautifully light and graceful arm movements:

Ending: Mao's final spin sequence and the beautifully expressive arm movements like a butterfly gracefully floating in for a lovely landing seamlessly blended into one continuous fluid motion

I'll personally never forget this one from Lulu (and there are so many beautiful moments throughout the program as well).

Mao Asada's arm movement at the end of her final triple loop at the Sochi freeskate is iconic to me because there she was, laying down an 8-triple program, and that arm to me said 'there you go, that's how you fight you little c***s'

Yu Na Kim's death stare at the beginning of Danse Macabre.

Carolina Kostner's hip swivel in Bolero

OBV for comical reasons, Laurine Lecavalier's costume change.

Ashley Wagner's arms in her black swan program. It was something so small, but it made such a difference.

And I was coming to say Yulia's look over her shoulder. That was the first thing that came to my mind.

lu chen was mentioned in the very first post for a reason! i also immediately thought of her, however, speaking of 'small gestures', i thought of the very first seconds of this program:

also agree with the d/w 2010 oly sd... they were robbed of gold, honestly. nobody has ever come near such perfection in their sd. not torvill/dean, not klimova/ponomarenko, nobody.

(i miss them)

honorable mentions: susanna pöykiö munich' program (stsq arm and body movements)
shawn sawyer's programs (his spirals were special, as was his one-hand i-spin... i'm not sure that's what it's really called, though)

Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay opened their glorious Missing Free Dance with a very simple motion. One foot stationary, the other simply rocking front and back.

It perfectly suited the mood of the dance and set the tone for the blockbuster that Missing was to become.

That was in 1990, and more than 25 years later, I see it in my mind's eye in perfect detail.

If you haven't seen it in a while, stop what you're doing and click:

The opening to Yuna Kim 2009 "Danse Macabre", perfectly timed with the music. If I remember correctly, she is supposed to be awakening from death and DW said in a interview that he was inspired by the thought of gargoyles (Did he watch Disney's Notre Dame? :)): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZAvsv93ZFM

That gives me chills every single time. Having studied this piece by Saint-Saens, I do not understand how a human being can convey the meaning of the music so well with just a pair of boots and blades. Absolutely spectacular and unforgettable.

I fondly remember how Delobel & Schoenfelder used their gloves as masks in their Carnival program 2005/2006?). Very creative & impressive, IMHO.

This is an iconic program from start to finish.

That moment in Yulia's Schindler's List when she drops her arms down during the Ina Bauer as if to signify the death of the girl in the red coat. Just fabulous.

They have the best crossovers of all time.

 Agreed! Whenever folks complain about empty programs with crossovers, I always partially object. Especially in pairs great crossovers are amazing to watch. I love when Elena and Anton would move across the ice like butter and pick up speed effortlessly. Also Anton was a pairs man with a good back!! Don't even get me started singing their praises.

His carriage and line is unmatched before or since.
