Now that we've seen everyone, let's have some fun with ice dance. Considering the top 10 of the previous season whose material do you really like?

Well, not so surprisingly I find the diversity in the SD refreshing this year so that list is long. Conversely, I felt many teams, in the top ten played it relatively safe in the FD, so my list of favourites is rather short. Also a few FDs have grown on me on first viewing them. Here we go.

Favourite SDs

1. W/P (loving the subtle sophisticated vibe from them and of course Poje )
2. Shibsibs (As balsy as they come with a wink to the judges)
3. V/M (the middle section/rhumba pattern is the class of the field)
4. H/D (the sass here is unmatched)
5. P/C (seeing Gabby in a new light, really cool)
6. G/P (the pure fun factor, and yes I like the sleeves too)
7. C/L (The Luca factor is strong here, of only Anna would open her shoulders and get into her knees,
the composition is good though)

Favourite FDs

1. V/M (the best thing they've ever done, hands down, if only they skated CARMEN like this!!)
2. P/C (depending on the mood though, it sometimes seems a minute too long)
3. Shibsibs (surprise, this one grew on me)
4. C/B (Who knew their Imagine would come across so well? Beautiful choreography and execution)

katsalapovs and sinitsyna have the best free dance among all of these dance pairs.

but their lifts are not so nice and one of them just can't skate clean at all. so they even can lose to bukins.

but their program and flow are really gorgeous

Bramweld, how did the Shibs FD grow on you? I recall you were not impressed by it at first.

Welcome to the convo, we're looking at the current top ten, from Helsinki 2017 though, so I hadn't even thought of S/K. I'm not sure if I disagree or agree per say. I find their level of skating somewhat similar. S/B seem to have the slight edge in my eyes just due to the polish, extension and dance quality I see in both their dances. I find S/K does that more successfully in the SD but when I watch the FD, I'm reminded of pair skaters. I get the feeling that they don't understand what they're skating to or they're not fully prepared to commit to the theme.

Any thoughts though on the front-runners for Olympic medals?

I saw a video from a different angle and somehow it better showed speed, attack and relationship between the two. I don't really like the music choice, as their "O" gala kind of spoiled me, but I'm open at least to seeing how it improves. I also appreciate how softly or deftly they skate. I began to see how much potential the piece had and I could see it looking really good for Skate America.

But as you can see from my list, I'm not really into many of the FDs this year. No matter the costuming and music, the majority just seem like a string of well choreographed elements, with the four I listed as my favourites I saw them rise above that level. If B/S's FD weren't so one note and devoid of transitions, IMHO, I might have given it the nod as well.

don't get me wrong but every olympic year is happening the same boring crap as always. two top id team vs. pairs for the bronze medal. in the previous olympics that were davis white vs. virtue moer, now it's canadians vs. frenchs. even ladies field is not so predictable as id. and you guys discussing this in many many pages. but as i noticed that 80% of conversations it's just about costumes and some boring drama. i mean in 4 years all will be the same, all your conversations will be the same just with another two favorite pairs. it's like groundhog day

but from the good side i must admit that us' teams right now have the best competition. at least three ours pairs can get the bronze medal. so fight for the bronze medal and us nationals will be more interesting than gold/silver for canada/france

I have to agree with you there as I honestly believe the bronze could be a toss up between the Shibs and H/D. All the best to the guys.

Do we have to choose from top 10 ? My favourite SD might be Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen :(

If top 10 :

SD : changes every single time, I can't make my mind up... I'm pleasantly surprised too, I thought I was going to dislike it, but there is a lot of variety. And I want to see again some of the SDs we haven't seen enough (Shibs, Chock/Bates, C/L...). One outing isn't enough to decide for me.

FD :

1.P/C
2.H/D
3.Shibs
4.V/M
5.C/L
Still waiting for another outing from Chock/Bates (for C/L even though they weren't fully trained, I liked the story and composition almost instantly so...).
The order is likely to change during the season (not for 1 and 2 though).

SD.

1. Shibs
2. Smart/Diaz
3. Kana/Chris
4. W/P
5. Chock/Bates
6. G/P
7. Kavita/Joti

FD

1. C/L They could not make a better choice, they have many technical deficiencies and this program helps them to hide them. I think this season they could get an iconic moment with this program. I think that regardless of the place where they end up, it will be one of the programs that people will want to return to see years later.
2. Shibs
3. V/M
4. Kana/Chris
5. Chock/Bates
6. Kavita/Joti
7. Sara/Kirill
8. P/C
9. S/K

I know that this season I have heard many people say that they do not like the programs but I have liked many of them.

Actually from the top 10, we're not really liking a lot of them :) But surprise, surprise, many thought the Shibsibs would have a problem with latin and they've totally nailed their interpretation of it. Haha!!

Im not so sure which SD i preffer the most yet. I like some parts of V/M SD, and Luca parts in C/L SD... Im also not quite sure about FD too. I always liked P/C free dance style, so... I also like first half of V/M FD. I liked W/P Je suis malade a couple of years ago. From American couples i prefer H/D the most this year. I also like B/S FD... In general, Fournier Boudry/Sorensen FD is without the doubt my winner this year, but they were just close to top 10 last year. Im sad V/M didn't chose to skate that programme. The concept of it is a masterpiece

I am using your list... to make my own ;) too lazy and in a hurry....

Favourite SDs

1. W/P i think latin really works for them...
2. V/M love the non touch sequence and their pattern is so lovely
3. Shibsibs surprised by it... love it... great package
4. H/D agree with you on sass.
5. P/C agree with you that Gabby steals the show here.. but it doesn't work for me
6. G/P
7. C/L

Favourite FDs

1. V/M i hate the music but they do it very well... the ending is getting better each time.
2. H/D i think this is the dance that will grow on me as the season goes on so right now in 3 or 4 but will probably end in 2
3. Weapo : i think when this is repolished it will be awesome.. the emotional content is there already
4. C/B : i was surprisingly impressed ... for once i didn't want to turn off the volume or close my eyes ...less OTT than usually
5. F/B-S : just loved their free dance
6 P/C if they change the order of some elements to go with the faster section, this could be a masterpiece... right now it's like baking a soufflé and it's so exciting as it is flawless in the oven but then once out, it sinks in.... mehhhhhhhhh

gotta go to work... honorably mention G/P and C/L but i need to see it again.

I'm curious which video you saw? I assume it was a fan cam? I did see a fan cam practice of their FD and I agree they look far better here.

Anyway, I am glad to hear that it grew with you cause I know you're a hard sell. I like the Shibs SD far more than their FD at this point and I'm hoping for major improvements at SkAm.

I'm still working my way through the dances and hope to come back and give my favorites in a bit.

Hehe....

I'll go with V/M for both right now, although that might change as the season goes along. H/D are a close second for the FD.

bramweld, I am so pleasantly surprised (shocked) that you put the Shibs' FD as among your favorite FDs after your initial reaction to it (which was wildly different from your initial reaction to their SD). I think you may like the Shibs' FD more than I do as of right now just because I have a few FDs I personally prefer over the Shibs' currently with H/D being my favorite at the moment. I also think Chock/Bates' FD is by far their best FD ever to the point where I'm going to finally get them as a team and I appreciate how they could have made something sappy but instead made something really beautiful and interesting to watch with it. I do think I like Stepanova/Bukin's FD despite myself. I can't explain it, it just got me. Special mentions to Muramoto/Reed for sheer lyrical beauty and F/B-S' awesome FD that makes me so mad that the general Olympic audience won't see it (they still need to sell the slow part much better and I think Sorensen can do better with the intensity).

V/M's first half has always got me though I HATE both men's singing voices. I think the second half still needs work but I admit I loved the way Tessa performed her dying parts in the second half of NHK...that quick snappy quality and easy "recovery" and rise with her hitting the perfect position on it CANNOT be understated in how difficult and beautiful it is. The only thing that prevents me from loving V/M's FD is that I think they haven't figured out the right emotion and tone to make it not look like they're trying so hard with giving people both Carmen/Pink Floyd and Mahler/Umbrellas/Latch to please everyone and I do think MR's music just isn't to my liking (much like how I don't like Coldplay much and really don't like "Paradise" as a song).

I'm waiting till TdF and Skate America to announce my list because I think one outing isn't enough for me to gauge a program/performance and I want to give all teams the opportunity to perform at least twice.

Favourite Free Dances:

1. Hubbell / Donohue. Pure dance and passion; the technique disappears into the dance. Definitely grew on me.

2. Hawayak / Baker. A Dream of Love.

3. Papadakis / Cizeron. I love that they're using their lyricism and difficulty in classical music setting. This one grew on me.

4. Chock / Bates. Beautiful choreography, beautiful execution, such smooth and difficult lifts.

5. Cappellini / Lanotte. What Chapis said.

6. Kana / Chris. Beauty meets Prince Charming.

Favourite Short Dances:

1. Kana / Chris. See above. ^^^

Let me give you another little shocker, I don't really like H/D's FD but I dig their SD. I respect what they do but I find their skating a bit too heavy or overly controlled for the type of music they're skating to. Something just isn't quite right. As for V/M I just love all of it. I am going to be a blubbering mess when they perform this at the OG. God give us the grace to see that day. I will need so many tissues.

:), so far...

SD: I have general appreciation for a lot of teams actually, who not only show real effort to work the dance and squeeze out the best of the music, rhythm, movement, expression to engage people watching, but to try make the aesthetic in line with their own style and philosophy/way of movement. Also, great respect for those incorporating - more or less successful - ballroom dancing references like figures, body actions, connections or just giving out the joy, cheekiness, sensuality and all other array of emotions associated within the Latin style/rhythms/music! For example, at NHK last week I could not find a single performance that was not enjoyable in at least some extend, teams really get the material going in their respective abilities, even if the sole material/music/choreography is not up to everybody's liking. It's a great thing for the potato spectator I am:)

My top 4 personally speaking, taking into consideration more of general impression, how the dance, performance of it resonates with myself:

- Hubbell/Donohue: great 'rounding' and balance between polish of movement and giving out sensuality vibe of the music, dance performed more 'to each other' by my reception than 'to the public', which is a big advantage in my book - this closeness, intimacy and privacy atmosphere created between them makes a believable picture that attracts people;

- Virtue/Moir: it's quite a risky concept of the dance, but defended by very impressive performance, with stress and attention put to every element: expression, way of movement, connection, flow of the elements, attack, all done with equal strength and boldness. The level of ballroom references integration and how they are incorporated/executed is remarkable, along with the mix of control and sharpness over execution with vividness of expression. They both seem to have a great time performing it. Non-touching step sequence and pattern are a class on the field, former especially - once again, it reflects on so many things, incorporates rhythm, ballroom body action along with their individual personalities, chemistry between them AND character of the dance/music.

- Shibutanis: this is a SD that simply put a smile on my face, everything is just so easy on eyes and so well-thought to process the beauty and fluidity of the final effect, not analysing meticulously everything. They truly manage to play on the more 'vintage', traditional Latin concept, but make it work for their personal style, sleekness, modernity of movement, sourcing from tradition, but translating it into more modern surroundings, creating an universal appeal in my opinion. The music is probably cut/put together in the best way out there: it flows, presenting a range of rhythms, playing so nicely on tempos, which are then reflected brilliantly in choreography. The partial step sequence - for me, a gem of that dance, really showing of their fabulous polish and technical basis of execution, feel of the rhythm/musicality, attention to detail, their postures and how they are 'framing' the dance in elegant, sophisticated way. Another remarkable points: putting twizzles into counting part of music, making a statement from it and attention on bounce put for rhythmical accentuation of movement in non-touching step sequence. And it's just infectious to hum out the music and sway along with Maia's gorgeous fringe-y bottom of the dress; the effectiveness of this dance is insane;

- Gilles/Poiries - I know this is an odd choice, but I'm totally biased about the team and sold on the concept from the first outing, sorry not sorry. Again, such a well-thought, carefully crafted original concept of the dance, completed with totally cohesive package. This vintage-y feel of the music, the sleeves effect, cheekiness in expression gives all the 'wink' effect to the audience. Such a nice bouncing action effect in the first part of the dance incorporated, it feels Latin without being 'in-your-face', too hard about it. It's for me more about how to play out the rhythm/aesthetic/movement with our perspective, adding the character to it to reflect the team; I know it's not popular approach and the dance is not as impressive, chemistry-packed as others out there, but there is something about this understated, sophisticated, stylish outlook and feel of that SD that draws me like a good movie;

If I had to pick top 5 SDs so far, I'd have a trouble to pick out this fifth one to be honest...I just like something from a lot of dances, I'm not yet sold on a whole, but there are quite a few that are impressive - Weaver/Poje, Papadakis/Cizeron, Bobrova/Soloviev, Chock/Bates, Cappellini/Lanotte, Muramoto/Reed, Smart/Diaz, Coomes/Buckland, Fornier-Beaudry/Sorensen, Sinitsina/Katsalapov. I think that all those teams picked a good music and concept for them, enabling them to excel in the execution and creation a solid vibe, impact onto audience. Still curious how Chock/Bates and Cappellini/Lanotte SDs will grow and develop, Papadakis/Cizeron's SD is very well-put together, effective AND execute is a very strong, convincing manner, it just don't have the 'lasting effect' as a wholesome for me, comparing to their FD, still appreciating the work and effort put to make that aesthetic and rhythm work for them so well. Also, respect to Penny and Nick who have one of the most 'flowy' SD out there and working it so well (that lift done along with slow tempo of the music though - a masterpiece!)
