2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

How are the ladies in the second group doing? Ladies like Tess Hong, Amber Glenn, Vivian Le, and Emily Chan. Could any of them threaten the top ladies?

...second group?

Tessa and Vivian have not competed yet. Senior Ladies SP at Pacific Coasts starts soon and the FS isn't until tomorrow.

Emily will do her FS today. Senior Ladies SP at Mids starts in an hour. She was 3rd in the SP.

Amber has an International Conflict bye.

If you want more info, you can look in the US Nationals subforum where there's plenty of links and details.

...second group?

I wasn't sure how to explain it. What I meant by that was the ladies who 7-12 at Nationals. Like, the second to last flight. Does that make sense?

Oh, you mean envelope B and C. The ones that don’t have a bye but will be at sectionals. Well Tessa and Vivian just did their short and are both 2nd and 3rd. Starr Andrews won the SP in Pacifics. Senior ladies at Midwesterns is going on now. We’ll know something in an hour or so.

Pacific Coasts Senior Ladies SP update:

1) Starr Andrews, 66.46 (3T-3T, All Level 4 elements)
2) Vivian Le, 59.89 (All Level 4 elements)
3) Tessa Hong 59.89 (All Level 4 elements, attempted 3F-3T but 3F underrotated and 3T downgraded)
4) Sierra Venetta 55.76 (All Level 4 spins)
5) Kaitlyn Nguyen 51.56 (All Level 4 spins)
6) Nina Ouelette 50.85 (All Level 4 spins)
7) Livvy Shilling 49.29 (All Level 4 elements, attempted 3T-3T but second jump downgraded)
8) Vanna Giang 48.89 (3T, 3T)

Vivian and Tessa are listed as 2nd and 3rd respectively in the SP on the official results despite the tied SP scores.

Mids Seniors Ladies FS is in progress.

Wow....Good for Starr.....Is she going to compete as a Senior at Nationals?? The way the field is looking, she could threaten for a medal.

Since she's first at Pacific Coast Senior Ladies, I'd think so. :)

...considering these were the Senior Ladies SP results from Sectionals, then yes. As long as she qualifies, Starr will be competing as a Senior.

You know its interesting to point out that in mist of all the hoopla over Mirai's NHK trophy performance, and her triple axel, her score is only around 6 points higher then Mariah Bell's messy Rostelecom Cup performance. Mariah's score is actually second best at this moment for the American ladies on the GP.

So I find it interesting that nearly everybody is penciling in Mirai for the Olympic team, along with Ashley and Karen, yet barely anybody has Mariah in. Mariah has yet to show any real consistency but considering the fact she can score that well with a messy competition and isn't a name skater is pretty great. And the other ladies that people are predicting aren't exactly the model of consistency either. I think she's actually dead even with the others and not a spoiler :confused2:

Midwesterns Senior Ladies qualifiers to Nationals

1) Hannah Miller - 175.65 = 62.09 (1) + 113.56 (1)
- All Level 4 spins and solid jumps in the SP, all Level 4 spins/steps in the FS along with 6 attempted triples (Salchow downgraded)
2) Brynne McIsaac - 166.79 = 57.94 (2) + 108.85 (2)
- 2 Level 4 spins + Level 4 steps in the SP, same in the FS, 5 attempted triples (1 edge call, 1 underrotation)
- 8th at last season's Russia JGP event
3) Emily Chan - 155.54 = 54.71 (3) + 100.83 (3)
- All Level 4 spins but lost points from an invalidated 2S in the SP, 2 Level 4 spins in the FS but some issues with popping jumps and only 3 actual triples out of only 4 planned
- 6th at last season's US Classic
4) Ashley Lin 151.31 = 53.97 (5) + 97.34 (6)
- All Level 4 spins and tried a 3T-3T in the SP but second jump downgraded/fall in the SP, and all Level 4 spins in the FS with 5 triples (though 2 underrotated and one of those with an edge call as well) out of an ambitious 7 planned triples
- 6th at this season's Latvia JGP

Former Nationals competitors at Novice or above who missed out this year: Avery Kurtz, Paige Rydberg (9th at the 2017 US Classic, 2nd at the 2017 Philadelphia Summer International), and Maxine Bautista.

Sad for Avery, Paige, Maxine. :( :ghug:

Lest anyone wonder :
Paige competed in Junior Ladies at the Philadelphia International, and placed 2nd. (In Senior Ladies, Angela Wang placed 2nd and Bradie won.)
Paige's 9th at 2017 U.S. Classic was as a Senior, of course.

Congratulations to Hannah, Brynne, Emily and Ashley L.
First time as Seniors at Nats for all but Hannah, IIRC. :yay:

Another bit of news from Sectionals:

Alysa Liu won Junior Ladies SP at Pacific Coasts. 61.68.

Thanks to those providing the sectional results updates. I do recognize a couple of names from last year's Nationals, and it's unfortunate for those who competed last year but missed out on this year.

Personally, I'm not "penciling" ANYONE in for the Team at this point. Everything I've posted so far is preliminary only and contingent on upcoming events (only speaking for myself though). I don't like Bell's wild inconsistency, but if she can pull herself together at Nats she'll most certainly be in the mix. But remember that with "only" 3 spots, *at least* ONE of Wagner, Chen, Nagasu and Bell will miss out on the Olys. It'll be a tough one for whomever that is, for sure.

I'll wait until we see Chen at SA before breaking down who between her and Bell has the better chance. But even then, things flip-flop all the time. Chen and Bell could be on fire and Wagner and Nagasu could be struggling in two months' time.

If I thought that there was a ton of talent coming up the ranks, I'd be more inclined to think Polina Edmunds would exit skating, but fact is there's talent, but no one who stands out the way Michelle Kwan did (everyone knew she was a superstar in the making) or even Tara Lipinski. I don't think she would have put herself through the effort and, frankly, the humiliation of a comeback unless she thought she could get back up to a competitive level.

She needs her other jumps back and she needs to work on her conditioning and stamina. But the thing about Polina is that if she has those jumps, she'll be able to perform them. At this point, I'd guess she'll have a genuinely solid short at Nationals, but her FS still won't be there.

As for the other ladies, I honestly think it's as much a crapshoot for who will be on the Olympic team as I can remember. Every single one of them has been erratic. My guess is that out of Ashley/Karen/Mirai--two of them will go; the other will have a crash-and-burn nationals. In her place, will be a skater who has a break-through skate--Bradie, Starr, or someone else not really on the radar.

Since Gold has confirmed she is withdrawing from Nationals, can we finally put to bed the notion she is still a contender for for the olympic team? I'm sure there are a few die hard supporters that still cling to some kind of medical waiver. The same goes for Edmunds. It's been clear for weeks her comeback has fallen short. Her performance in France should put the nails in the coffin.

You need to relax. Gold already stated she isn't competing this Olympic season, meaning the whole season. Nobody is expecting a medical bye for her and all her fans are supporting her in her decision not to compete because her health is the number 1 priority if she ever wants to compete again.

I think one of the worst things you could due to Gracie right now is give her a medical bye to the Olympics. Imagine how much more anxiety that would cause.

Pacific Coasts Junior Ladies

1) Alysa Liu - 171.42 = 61.68 (1) + 109.74 (1)
- Two Level 4 spins and a solid 3F-3T with all + GOE in the SP, and all Level 4 spins plus a solid 3F-1L-3S plus an attempted 3Lz-3T though the 3T was underrotated and she did fall (but still, 7 attempted triples!)
- 2nd in Advanced Novice at this season's Asian Trophy
2) Akari Nakahara - 143.98 = 51.50 (4) + 92.48 (2)
-Level 4 on two spins + steps though both triples underrotated in the SP, then all level 4 spins and 6 attempted triples though 2 underrotations and an edge call
- 8th in the 2015-2016 Poland JGP
3) Lily Sun - 143.70 = 51.91 (3) + 91.79 (3)
- All Level 4 spins and a 3T-3T but edge call/fall on 3Lz in the SP, and 2 Level 4 spins plus 6 triples out of 7 planned including a 3T-3T though a fall on a solo 3F
4) Emma Coppess - 136.71 = 46.33 (6) + 90.38 (4)
- All Level 4 Spins/Steps in her SP despite popping her 3L and thus invalidating the entire combination in the SP, and then 2 Level 4 spins and 6 attempted triples with an underrotation and 2 falls

Junior Ladies Nationals Qualifiers by score

189.05 - Hanna Harrell (M1)
171.42 - Alysa Liu (P1)
163.31 - Ting Cui (E1)
161.76 - Jenna Shi (M2)
156.97 - Audrey Shin (E2)
151.35 - Pooja Kalyan (M3)
150.71 - Angelina Huang (M4)
149.60 - Gabriella Izzo (E3)
143.98 - Akari Nakahara (P2)
143.70 - Lily Sun (P3)
140.54 - Emily Zhang (E4)
136.71 - Emma Coppess (P4)

*Alysa is the only one who is ineligible for Junior Worlds. She does not turns 13 until August 2018 and thus won't be JGP eligible until the 2019-2020 season.

I wonder if they'd even give Hanna a JWs slot even if she clearly wins the title, considering all the Junior eligible skaters competing Seniors this year at Nationals. Emmy Ma, Kaitlyn Nguyen, Starr Andrews, Tessa Hong, and Ashley Lin all competed JGP this season. Emmy and Ashley have already qualified for Senior Nationals while the Starr, Tessa, and Kaitlyn have the FS at Pacific Coasts still to come right now. Plus the additional Junior-age-eligible skaters who've been competing Seniors nationally before.

Courtney Hicks just took the Bronze in Warsaw. Congratulations on making the most of your opportunities this fall.
