2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Months ago I commented that Starr should have been given a GP assignment but people were saying she didn't have the senior world ranking required for it when they made the picks. Is that true?
It's true. Starr hasn't competed much internationally. So she didn't have the WR points or high score to get on the GP yet. However if she does well at JW this year, she can earn a spot by getting a score in the top 25 and perhaps earn the SA slot as well.

Starr did not meet any of the conditions to be guaranteed 1GP invite (look at Courtney Hicks who medalled at Rostelecom Cup last year with no assignments before the start of the series). Starr did meet minimum requirements to be considered for the GP (technical minimums and valid score from the previous season). Like Bradie, Starr most likely needed the host pick for USA's own GP event.

I think USFSA is considering Starr as an outside chance for the Olympics, but since she's coming off an injury, USFSA wants Starr to prove she's up to the senior ranks as well as Bradie who has had a breakout early season.

I'm more surprised that one of Mariah/Mirai was not chosen.

Starr is on an upward trajectory. She is a dark horse at this point with how the US girls are doing.

I don't see Starr going to the Olympics. She doesn't have the technical goods or the skating skills/polish.

Polina made the Olympic team 4 years ago and was a bit of a surprise, but Polina was also coming off of some JGP medals and having made the JGP final. Starr hasn't been nearly as impressive internationally as Polina was at the time.

With some rapid improvement, Starr could be more of a factor next year. (Especially given how depleted the US ladies will probably be post-Olympics.) But if she was to make the Olympics this year, it would be because all of the other favorites did really, really badly at Nationals.

Maybe she could go to 4CCs this season? That would be great for her, as would another Junior Worlds experience.

Tell me!!!!
If not on here than on PM :)

I would like to know as well. I’m suspecting something too when I see who else is on the list but I’m hoping I’m wrong...

do share - I am intrigued!!!

The best part about the ladies thread is it’s vastly more civil than the men’s thread when it comes to discussing Olympic spots. I don’t feel like starting any fights here. But will consider writing it...

But aren’t the peaceful discussions nice here?

I agree that USFS is doing what they did or the JGP guys last year, i.e. Vincent, Andrew and Tomoki -- just giving Starr a chance to earn her minimums for Worlds/4CC/Olympics. That is a very encouraging sign on the part of USFS.

She already earned them earlier this season at Philadelphia International.

I would hope that people would be civil with their responses to any speculation (after all, it’s only speculation). Nobody is a lock at this point, so I would be curious to know your thoughts on the Golden Spin entries.

Starr is last year’s junior silver medalist. She was fifth on the GP this year in Austria. Just yesterday, she scored the highest senior score in the nation at sectionals.

This is her short from the GP. https://youtu.be/ug9zzCUSQAk

Thanks

Cool. Whatever happens, I hope she is given the appropriate space and isn’t smothered by the Hype Machine like Gracie Gold was. Yes, I know, it’s like hoping Wagner wins the Olys or something :ohwell:

I have a theory, but I don’t think people will like it.

For some reason I have a feeling where this could be going...I think it all comes back to USFS’ foresight, or perhaps lack of it if you prefer.

I know you can't compare domestic and international comps, but the fact that Starr can outscore the other US women without a 3Lz or 3F is still mind boggling. She only does 3T-3T in her SP, but from the video it was done very well with no question of UR.

And it still amaze me that Emmy Ma medal in Riga without triple-triple, 3A or even quads like others in junior competitions. And that’s what I wish some of ladies skaters would remember: focus on quality and not quantity or the higher technical moves.

Good luck this week to Angela Wang :yay: and Caroline Zhang :yay: at Tallinn Trophy.

And to the ladies at Skate America.

You meant to say JGP regarding Starr.
An innocent slip b/c I know that you know all this stuff backwards and forwards and sideways .
But I don't want others to get confused.

How in the world did I do that? Yikes! I was one of the ones explaining why she wasn’t going on the GP this season! I’m editing that immediately!

Suspecting what?
Disclaimer: I’m new to this figure skating, so I might not know all the history and logic...this is based of what I read and what I observe the season so far.

I’m suspecting this is the final ‘arc’ of head-to-head comparision for USFS to make decision for Olympic team. It is clear that Mirai > Mariah (3:1) and Ashley > Karen (2:0). So for the last comparison it seems is Karen vs Bradie. They are competiting this week and this new competition entries might offer another look (though I would be curious if they are tied after this).

As I had mentioned before, I’ll wait for @frida80 more detail analysis.
