2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Chen and Wagner have another head to head this week, so we’ll see. I think it’s too soon to *definitively* pick Wagner now, but a win by her here would work strongly in her favor. If Chen gets the better of this battle, though, momentum shifts...

Disclaimer: I’m new to this figure skating, so I might not know all the history and logic...this is based of what I read and what I observe the season so far.

I’m suspecting this is the final ‘arc’ of head-to-head comparision for USFS to make decision for Olympic team. It is clear that Mirai > Mariah (3:1) and Ashley > Karen (2:0). So for the last comparison it seems is Karen vs Bradie. They are competiting this week and this new competition entries might offer another look (though I would be curious if they are tied after this).

As I had mentioned before, I’ll wait for @frida80 more detail analysis.

I think if Karen beats Ashley at SA, it means that Ashley definitely will have to medal at Nationals to make the Olympic team. Really, anything short of winning SA and making the GPF probably won't get Ashley directly on the team. Not a single American has had an event this season that would come anywhere close to winning an Olympic medal. The 5 season best scores are all over 215, and no one except Bradie has come within 20 points of that mark. Six other Americans have SB scores between 182 and 195, so it's probably pointless to play favorites in that group by sending one of them over a Nationals medalist.

Good that the USFS is finally catching up on the whole sending girls without/with less experience to get more experience thing t b h.

Wagner said she was going to get new costumes; anyone seen them??
Also, any word on whether she’s been working with a spin coach? I think there was talk about how she had to figure out what to do with her layback, because doing a beilmann hurt her back?

I would be surprised if Karen beats Ashley. But perhaps SA will prove me wrong. I just feel like Karen has regressed back to her old ways prior to Nats last year. Hope I'm wrong. I just wish Mariah would get consistency.

Much as I like Polina (and I've basically been a Polina cheerleader here), I think her FS won't be where it needs to be at Nationals. If her FS had been in the same shape as her SP, I'd rate her chances a bit higher, but her FS is only at about 50 percent of where it needs to be while I'd put her SP at about 70 percent.

I also think that since *none* of the U.S. Ladies are serious medal contenders that the US fed will be inclined to give a spot to a future hopeful who can develop into a future medal contender--I'm sort of surprised that there's not more discussion of Bradie Tennell as a contender for that reason. I suppose it's because we haven't seen a lot of her yet.

good luck to bradie, ashley and karen at skate america

good luck to all ladies competitors at the upcoming nationals and congrat on getting through.

She got at least one new costume.

she just posted a "sneak peek" on an instagram story. She just showed a blurry video of a small part of it. It looks to be black with gold sparkle. Maybe the SP dress?

I don't think it's regression. She's always just extremely up and down, hot and cold.

I'm interested to see how Bradie does at Skate America. She was solid in all her pre-season events. Even if her best isn't good enough to medal at Skate America, she'd make a statement by beating a subpar Karen.

Bradie is 19, which isn't really that young. There are, of course, skaters who peak in their 20's; Ashley Wagner and Carolina Kostner immediately come to mind. However, it is much more common for skaters to make their mark when they are younger. Having said that, Bradie is a contender for the spot on merit alone.

Sorry, but I don't think they are good, let alone "quite good".

Polina isn't skating that much different than she was at the last Olympics, excluding the flip and the lutz jumps. If she re-acquires those two jumps, it's reasonable to say that she'll be able to reproduce her 2014 performances.

Ashley and Karen secured 3 spots for the US. Ashley has one spot, and the other two are wide open. Polina has just a good a chance of getting that spot as any of the other women.

With all due respect, either you haven't see her skating lately or you're simply delusional. :rolleye:
These are two completely different skaters and physical abilities.

I agree. I'm glad Polina was able to enjoy her Freshman year of college but, it's clear that she missed a ton of training time. Fortunately, she is still rather young. I don't think she'll make the team this year but, if she stays with skating, she could have a great season in 2019. Should she decide to stay eligible for 2022, she'll still be younger than Ashley is now.

I've always been a big complainer about Polina's speed, but I think she looked pretty fast in France. She went out there to compete knowing she was far from 100%, and that took courage. I want to believe she's serious about a comeback, and that even if she doesn't make the Olympics this year, she keeps going for next year. If she stays healthy and motivated, there's no reason to believe she won't get the flip and lutz back by next season. But I worry she'll quit or won't fully commit to a comeback. Which would be a major shame.
