Medvedeva WDs from GPF

i don't think she has any problems with money being the best female skater in the world for two years straight
She has also a family and coaches, among whom there've certainly been people going to work for 4 years straight to get the money, she might collect by showing up in her average form, skill level and reputation.
I'm not saying, things like that should be decisive, I'm saying anybody writing about her decision should realize top athletes are not living in vacuum, they're just like us - humans surrounded by other humans depending on them and directly or indirectly influencing their decisions.

[Btw., average wage data are always a bit inflated - most of population earn less.]

It's certainly impressive to win the Grand Prix Final three times in a row, but if we look at it from a financial perspective, we could say she is not guaranteed a win, if her inury is still worrying. And if you look at Evgenia's career past her 'amateur' years what do you think is worth more, having been "Olympic Gold Medalist" or "3 times Grand Prix Final Winner". Of course the GPF is prestigious and the Olympics shouldn't be the end of all and everything. But they are. No one cares about the GPF outside of figure skating fans. Olympic Champion? You bet that you'll profit for life.

Gahhh this wait is killing me. But I think that if they need to make a statement it probably means that she's WD - and it's probably for the best. We need her healthy at OG and Euros!

whatever the yearly salary of a russian family is... let's not play these games... "poor Zhenya, she's Russian, she has to earn money for all her family including third cousins from the left hip"... seriously. If she feels healthy, she will go, and if she doesn't feel healthy, she will be fine with what she's earned the last few years, especially in sponsors and special appearances. Extra money is always good but the money at stakes for Olympics is much bigger...

Your link presents gross domestic product, not average salary, which is ~560$/month.

Everybody knows where Russian GDP goes. ;)

Your link presents the norminal wage per month. But norminal wages are useless if you want to measure the living standart.

My link was right "The gross domestic product (GDP) per capita"

"Your link presents gross domestic product" No, this is gross domestic product.

First of all, for you it might be 'game', for Russian family 25k$ might be a life changer.
Secondly, nobody knows, if there will be ANY Olympics' money for Russian skater.

What are you trying to say here? You want Evgenia to compete with an injury and risk her health for 25k, she's already earned tenfold before and will again, if she's healthy? I'm all for risk and reward, but I think the 25k are not worth it. And Tudberidze team has Alina going....so if Evgenia doesn't win there is a good chance the money for the coaches and team will flow anyway.

You seem to be too lazy to read my previous post and I'm too lazy to rewrite it, so copy/paste ;)

It's just irritating to read all those repetitive, reckless "she should pass for her own good" mantras.
Run a successful 25k$ fundraiser and then bombard professional athlete with health advices. :rolleye:

Or respectfully wait for her decision.

I've read all your posts and I still don't understand what you are trying to say, so it's probably better to leave it at that, but one last thing. You seem to think she has the 25k guaranteed. Well, what happens if she doesn't win? If she has to withdraw or falls all over the place and ends up last? This is what I'm trying to say, if you think about this from a financial POV losing these 'potential' 25K now, is not as bad as losing the chance competing for more money in the future competitions.

Still no news. Geez keeping us on pins and needles. MaiKatze stop being lazy. :palmf: (jk)

Actually, what people want to say is: right now, Zhenia most likely is the main source of income in her family.

After the latest crisis, many families lost income, and now have debts and mortages to pay, which they could pay before, but couldnt pay now. Now, there is no guarantee there will be Olympics, or even if there will be, she is not guaranteed to remain healthy and be able to compete and blabla. So we do not now, and i see how those 25k can be a big deal even for her.

Also, she does not get all the 25k. Russian skaters usually give some good share of that to their coaches, who usually receive a pretty low pay from the state.

OK. I get what you're saying. If she says she'll compete in the GPF it is clear that she's healthy enough. I still think it's a flaw in the logic to think, well I don't know if I'll win the next competitions (not even talking about the Olympics) so I'll risk it all in the here and now. I'm just of the mindset that you have to think about the future. And the coaches of Medvedeva also have Alina, and I think many junior girls in the GPF (I don't follow, so I'm not sure). So the GPF won't be a loss if Evgenia doesn't compete.

Really? Do you have any source for this? I don't know how things work in Russia but she should have parents or at least some sort of a guardian right? Also isn't she training with Eteri for a long time now, how did she get the money for training before she actually started to win things if she had no other income?

I understand what people mean by how important this money is for a skater but I don't think this would apply to Evgenia at the moment.
She is too famous now and we have already seen her in commercials, campaigns, magazine shoots etc. You can make considerable amount of money from these if you do them with big companies, as think Evgenia does. She probably gets more offers than she could accept so I don't think she would be the one having a financial problem, unless either her or her family member are crazy spenders of course

I think I remember reading somewhere, probably here, that Shoma Uno only just breaks even, including all his winnings and sponsorships. There are so many expenses associated with skating that even a nation's top skater probably isn't rolling in dough (at least dough generated from skating).
