2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

*slowly raises hand* Three questions (because I am still so confused).

1. Will every year now there be a "body of work" selection for who gets sent to Worlds/Olympics no matter what the results are at Nationals?

2. Will this "body of work" process apply to who gets assigned as alternates?

3. Will the competitions that make up the criteria and how heavily they are weighed be the same from year to year, or will the criteria change?

Well I would say body of work is here to stay and based on Jason and Max (and actually some past decisions) it does apply to alts.

as for what it will be in the future... Phill Hersh has already tweeted that changes are being discussed.

https://twitter.com/olyphil/status/950443066724294656

It will be an ongoing evolution... as it should be... maybe someday they will stop picking worlds spots right after US Nationals... bloody wait for 4CC!

Creating more transparency about the process and letting certain skaters know if they would/would not be eligible with a podium finish at Nationals will help skaters and coaches decide if they want to go ahead and invest their funds and time at Nationals and save a lot of confusion and heartache. This is especially crucial for the older skaters who have dedicated their lives to and invested so much into their skating and who might only be aiming for the Olympics. If it has been made clear to Ross that with a podium finish, he wouldn't even be considered as 1st alternate and would only go to 4CC, it is likely the decision wouldn't be such a blow to him and his coach.

Is this really that far off?

GIRL you are such an amazing and beautiful human being. You and your fighting spirit always inspires me. Sending positive vibes!

I don't like this either, imho, if any of these are sincere, they would be sent quietly and kept private, instead of being out there for public consumption.

When it is done in public, there's a whole other dimension to it. We're in an era of instagram and social media. I think someone else posted on another thread about Ashley hugging Gracie when the camera panned...people notice if it's meant for the public. It's a meta media age.

See, you yourself noticed it...it stood out...a PR fail.

To clarify the etiquette here.

"I'm proud of you" implies that you think the recipient actually cares about your opinion about his or her performance. You say that if you're a mentor, a spouse, a parent, a best friend. Otherwise, a heartfelt "You did great!" makes it about the recipient, and not you. Normally it wouldn't sound "off" but it's the context of "winners" publicly texting to "losers" and the Olympic berth that raise this up about, oh 10000 notches.

I hope that coaches go beyond simply coaching figure skating to avail their wards some "life-coaching", especially in an age where skaters put up their public blogs, websites, social media account with thousands if not millions of followers.

Christine Brennan also makes her career by stirring up drama, so over course she’s “about to snap”.

I’m sad for Ross but I don’t see why everyone is so surprised? USFS needs to go with the best overall team.

Ashley was only going if she made top 3 and everyone knew that. She doesn’t have the record the past 2 years to justify another team placement.

I also would’ve put Vincent on Worlds and Ross at Oly, but Vincent got silver last year and then won junior worlds, and they will reward that. If anything, it’s the alternate list that is shady towards Ross.

Yep. They screwed over Vincent last year--and he is the up-and-coming talent for the U.S. I actually get putting Adam on the team, but I really don't get this second-alternate nonsense--it's basically a no-way, no-how are we ever going to let you get to the Olympics or Worlds Ross--your brilliant skate was meaningless as far as we're concerned.

FWIW, I think Karen just likes communicating this way. Here's a comment she left on Jason's IG post:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BdqJU_4gsac/?taken-by=jasonbskates

karebearsk8 ILYSM U INSPIRE ME ❤️

For the uninitiated the acronym stands for = I love you so much!

She gave a similar comment to Ashley after Worlds when she felt bad about her placement there and that she was glad that Karen came through --- and Karen said something like "Girl, we did this together!"

The tweet seems pretty much in line with how she responds to other skaters' social media posts.

It may be, but those words to anyone but Ashley at this particular moment is a faux pas. Ashley's silence speaks volumes.... Neither Bradie nor Mirai did this publicly, it would be awesome if they did it privately. When Ashley is *this* furious, it's just not the thing to do publicly. After this debacle, I really feel that skaters need some PR coaching about what they put out in the public realm. Ashley seemed to be an old hand at this but she's slipped up recently.

Karen sounds like a sweet girl though, in the other tweets *before* all of this.

For sure it isn't right for Adam to reveal publicly that "Ross is happy for him" and seemed fine with it.

It is for Ross and his coach to decide on *their* public response.

While some coaches, based on their personality and what they are professionally comfortable with, are willing to take on a "mentor" role with their students, I'm not sure this is realistic to expect this of all coaches at an elite level.

Isn't this some of what's supposed to be covered at Champ's Camp? I'm convinced that Champ's Camp, other than probably the monitoring sessions (which the skaters have to complete, anyway) is basically useless as far developing U.S. skaters competitively and professionally.

Somehow, it seems a lot more "disciplined" with the figure skaters from say, Japan, Russia, Europe...

Nothing but positive stuff...can't recall any particular "drama", even though there must be some.

I don't know if this may be intentional as the media no doubt enjoy the circus and it makes for more publicity!:coffee:

Thought I'd post this since some have argued in this thread (as well as the one announcing placements and then the main competition thread) that they feel like Nationals isn't even necessary if not everyone is really in consideration, even if they place well.

This is from Sean Rabbitt, who obviously wasn't 'a factor' in the sense of anyone with real probability to make any of the Oly/Worlds/4CC teams and I think it says exactly why Nationals IS relevant, even if it's not a sole determining factor for positions like some here feel is should be.

I spend a year planning, training, dieting, and studying, pushing myself to my limits for it all to come down to a measly 8min in total. This year specifically, I faced more challenges than before; changing my long program and my short program, battling 2 hip injuries and so after all the hard work is done, when I get out to center ice and that music starts, I hope it was all worth it. Ithink about my character, telling the story I have spent the last year perfecting. As I get into the character the jumps and spins I have ever so tirelessly worked on fall right into place, just as planned, just as practiced. The crowd goes wild, and everyone says to me after “you look like you’re having so much fun” well my friends, it’s because I am having fun, and have a lot to be happy for. This to me is a win, this to me is my nationals gold medal.

Thank you San Jose for making the 2018 US Championships such a memorable experience. I skated the most perfect short program of my life and a long program that was nothing short of fantastic. It has been a long and difficult season with many high points as well as many low points. I can proudly say this week was a success and am coming home proud of my accomplishment! Now time for a nap!

And is exactly why we need more skaters like Sean Rabbitt:

Doesn't have a quad, never will have a quad, but has the "wow" factor in triplicate, and cares, yes, cares, about the audience as much as the judges.:agree:

Given that Sean is one of our "older" skaters, he may retire soon (don't know, just guessing) and that will be a loss. And I am soooooo happy I got to see "Tequila" and the Mambo last summer in person:dance3:

It may be, but those words to anyone but Ashley at this particular moment is a faux pas. Ashley's silence speaks volumes....

Or, it could merely mean that Ashley's taking a break from Twitter for a few days. If I were Ashley, I certainly would.

For sure it isn't right for Adam to reveal publicly that "Ross is happy for him" and seemed fine with it.

It is for Ross and his coach to decide on *their* public response.

I don't disagree with you. But on the other hand, Adam's tweet was ... Adam being Adam. As he's said many times recently, it was a big deal and took years and years for him to be able to be himself, as a skater and as a human being. He used to try too hard to figure out what others wanted from him and then produce it. He's had to learn how to be himself, and it's recent; when a behavior is new, it can take time to work out the kinks.

I think Adam genuinely wanted to publicly give encouragement to Ross, and to share with others that the two are friends and can be happy for the other's successes. Everyone will have their own ideas about how it should have been done. Something to consider: Adam probably felt as disappointed about his FS as Ross did about not being appointed to the team. They both have reasons to feel happy and simultaneously disappointed about this competition.

Jimmy Ma gets more love, this time from NPR!

http://wnpr.org/post/figure-skaters-can-use-music-lyrics-first-time-2018-olympics

The story also mention's Yuzu's fab Let's Go Crazy program.

This also speaks to the "Why bother having a Nationals if not for team selection thing." I've had SO MANY friends post links to articles and other things about Jimmy Ma and his decision to choose hip-hop. Jimmy Ma's made his mark this Nationals, all without making the Olympic team.

I think yes, the competitions that are factored into the decision and where they rank are specific. And I get they can't reveal every aspect of the process to the detail. But this is PR/community relations 101 -- you got to make sure that every possible question that a stakeholder/journalist has. When you are doing a major diversion to a long-standing process, you need to put in the work to make sure that everybody understands the process enough where there are no unpleasant surprises come team selection day.

USFS did a disservice by not setting up designated interviews in the months leading up to Nationals with key press stakeholders, i.e. Phil Hersh, Christine Brennen and other Olympic writers who show up -- Jere Longman, Nancy Ford, etc. Why not arrange something at a Team USA media summit or at NBC's press session?

You have to almost assume that that stakeholders/media won't understand. Even a simple -- "Nationals may be of significance for this person because XYZ" or whatever - may have been beneficial.

Great points (as usual!), Mrs. P. I would add that another thing that needs to be done is having more transparency about the selection committee itself. Phil Hersh stated on his Twitter account (or perhaps in one of his articles) that he repeatedly asked USFSA who was on the committee and wasn't answered. And if I understand correctly he was asking way before all the drama occurred. I don't mean that in any "witch hunt" sort of way, but as Phil pointed out, the NCAA football and basketball selection committees aren't anonymous. And let's fact it, the consequences of their decisions can mean thousands or even millions of dollars for the schools involved.

I got to see it at Nationals last year. Still one of the most memorable performances of the entire week, and he even fell.

Let's send him to the Olympics.

Another piece to confirm that Josh has been in some dark places. :( The idea to think that Josh struggled to muster the desire to just live life is terrible to hear and put into perspective the high costs of this sport.

I'm glad to see that people have stepped up and supported him and that is really thoughtful of Josh to pay it forward.
