Nathan Chen

My 2 cents on Nathan in HK - I have two HK friends met individually through hs when they came for school and returned after college who are Nathan fans I found out later, both told me as we chatted more about him in the last 1/2nyr that he’s the local FS fans favorite because aside from academic achievements, they like his fusion style in general and his athleticism. In Taiwan, a few (also from hs) and exchange programs, even though Hanyu is most popular Nathan is the fav US skater among the youngsters and single ladies who follow/like the sport. I do see how Vincent is more fitting for the young scholarly image of the Chinese culture in general.

The end.

I don’t know for sure (because I do not follow Nathan Chinese boards or chats), but just from my own knowledge - I could see how some Chinese fans would not find Nathan as handsome. Nathan doesn’t have large eyes, he is not as fair in complexion, he’s shorter, and not as lanky.
I don’t really disagree that Nathan does not fit the ‘ideal’ look in China as much as Vincent ?
But ugly ...?😔

That’s why I mentioned somewhere like Hong Kong (more westernized) could be very receptive to Nathan, but it’s really a tiny market - only a bit more than 2x population than Arkansas lol

Nathan's Chinese really sounded like American born Hong Kong pop idol.

but I think in the future, Nathan will have comparable fandom to V in China as well. Nathan sure has way more fans in US than V.

I do think hotness is universal, no matter People's aesthetics.

Cuteness is a huge idol culture in China or just Eastern Asian in general. thus Boyang and V (and Yuzuru in some sense) is really play into this.

Thanks hhh for giving some of the HK fans perspective - and as I suspected - his looks and style are appealing there

Definitely could see Nathan being popular in Taiwan as well

Np, just bits and pieces I’ve seen. I’m currently in SG for work and found a Taiwan sports channel that have all of the ISU competitions, they’re licensed (through Universal Asia) to livestream the competitions, it’s my Nathan magic vault for now and their commentaries (though they don’t have top contenders) are surprisingly poignant and offer insightful perspectives, they also recognize Nathan is musically gifted referencing some of his steps and spins and his growing artistry etc. I plan to binge watch all of them before my trip ends; what an unexpected but nice find. Sorry for the long blah haha

haha yes - those ABCs who go to HK to become stars. I’m half Cantonese and half southern Chinese like Nathan (I’m really reaching here;))

Maybe he can record a video message for his HK fans too - in Cantonese for 💯 bonus points !

You mean Asian Americans who go to Asia to become stars in general. haha I don’t think I should drink water when listening to his HK msg if there’s ever going to be one lol

hhh - what a nice discovery on your work trip and hope you have time to watch everything!
That is truly awesome and glad to hear that the Taiwanese commentators appreciate Nathan’s qualities and talent.

Wonder if he’s known in SE Asia - SG and also Malaysia - didn’t he do shows there before?

Yes Malaysia years ago, as junior champ right?! Love that exhibition, as always super cute and the crowd loves it. What I enjoyed about the commentary is they would explain what they believe to be the elements/strengths of the champions because the videos show the competitions in its entirety, and of course aside from OG sp, he was the overall champ 😉 even the OG fs, they were excited he nailed it and reminded the viewers he won the FS in the end.

I love to see you reaching so hard here:laugh:

Nathan cannot speak Cantonese.

And speak of V's old soul, do you know what word Chinese fans used to describe him the most: "老干部" :laugh2: google translate it if you need to

Honestly, the idol culture in Chinese seems really weird to me. As for male skaters or actors in general, the majority FANS always go to those not that masculine...
Not to be offensive, but that's the fact.

haha I know Nathan can’t speak Cantonese and the HK canto video msg isn’t going to happen😂

I will he happy just to hear him say 陈巍

Hhh, the channel you were watching - was it by any chance the same as the one in this video? https://youtu.be/dExKhUcVpmo
I really loved the commentary from the guy and how he commented that Nathan is a strong all around skater and that his steps demonstrated great edging and skating skills!

Wild, rebellious Nathan😂

He just seems to prefer comfy clothes - preferably Nike sweats and his grey security blankie😊

Yaaas ELTA, so we can watch some back in the States? Sweet! There are one women and two men that are good at pinpointing his elements.

Hey, guys, anybody would like to respond to Back from the Edge there? Please don't get emotional

@bonita the poster posted the long repo post on that SOI thread is a ...how should I say this, the exact opposite of a Nathan fan.

it is nice that s/he even has something nice to say about Nathan.

before my Nathan uber days, just as a figure skating fan who cares about Nathan among many talented skaters, I have defended Nathan against that ID.

So forgive me, I am not interested...

I think we will have plenty of our own repo of Nathan SOI show, when some of our own went to watch Nathan later into this tour, like perhaps @mamamiia tomorrow.

^Re: Nemesis, maybe in that particular show he was tired. But otherwise in all of the fan videos I have seen from SOI he has been doing nothing but bringing the house down. And several reviews on FSU have named him as one of their top highlights from the shows. Super energetic and charismatic - nothing like the competitions. I really hope he brings it at the LI show - I want nothing more than seeing Nemesis live skated to its full potential :))))

Well, I like how he can even move a person who doesn't like his skating with his performance. And one he made himself as well. It's not that uncommon to see either for people to dislike his competition programs but like his exhibitions. Of course, I fail to see how you can't appreciate Nemesis, but I won't argue!

And linking another thread got us in trouble last time fyi. :slink:
