Nathan Chen

I wish he could rest too. I know they don't do SOI everyday, but with travel back at forth it's just a few days off at most. The Olympics were only 2 months ago, though they feel like forever ago, and he's been going nonstop from even before then of course.

Some people just don't like it, which you can do nothing about it. I saw much worse reaction/comments of Nemesis on the World thread, something like Nathan "butchered" Nemesis by the end of season, and I just couldn't help laughing about it. I naturally only process good things from non fan, and not processing the bad stuff. I am probably the only one who like his SP VW Lululemon tracksuit (not the back tho) and the haircut during nationals. He just looked so sharp, crisp, confident, and different to me. The minute he stepped on the ice, it was like the return of the king. Haha, finally, I can say it loud now.

I liked the OG VW white collar the first time I saw it.

I liked all his Vera customs. They really accentuated his body lines during his performances and I especially liked his all black outfit during Nationals, he looked like the black panther lol. Maybe it’s because I’m into design but I def see where Vera was going with it and why she choose specific patterns that suited the programs. It made me appreciate his body line even more because it was more evident. I think she did a good job personally and his LP at OG/WC outfit was really classy and elegant looking.

In terms of him being overworked, he seems fine to me but I usually trust that he wouldn’t try to handle more than he can take on. He’s been multitasking his whole life and is used to a busy schedule, I actually wouldn’t find it odd if that’s his comfortable state as he seems to be a workaholic but he talks a lot about body recovery and taking care of his body so I’m positive he knows what he’s doing & if it’s too much, he’ll cut back. His body awareness is one of the things he gets a lot of praise on from all those that worked with him (similar to Michelle Kwan, she REALLY knew & took care of her body/health) so I wouldn’t worry.

:cheer:

thank you for going the extra mile with the equipment. i am grateful for any glimpse we get from any attendee, if only so i don't wonder if he was sickly or too exhausted, etc. because of other fans' less than glowing impressions.

we are all human and i very much appreciate your generosity, but i am thinking that most folks who share video/post a snippet do so because of one of these reasons:

-the fan wants a record of having attended an event--wants to have something for a facebook post, or a blog...
-the fan wants to have re-watchable footage, and already knows nbc's camera followed adam during the group numbers

it's all about relative priorities. if you only wanted a record that you were there, a group photo with shine and the other fans should do it! or even better, your own meet and greet pic with the cast ;)

if in the moment, you want to give all of your attention to nathan, i absolutely support that :)

thank you for going through the trouble and dealing with the stress of equipment delivery. all i can truly hope for (because honestly i already have a ton of old videos to watch, and i enjoyed nathan best when he was younger) is to hear you had a fun time and survived the traffic

May I say I am actually expecting more hat falling, white shirt tearing (like when his head was trapped in the shirt during spins) kind of unexpected moments;) .

Actually I'll be the first to admit I was not that satisfied with his Worlds performance to Nemesis so unfortunately I can't really fault the people for feeling that way. The program did get some of the best reception at the start of the season, like at Rostelecom and SA, when he really *performed*. He was reserved and focused on the jumps at Worlds and it did feel like he could've done so much more. But he's going full out at these shows though (IMO the only way Nemesis should be skated) - I only wish he did the same during comeptitions. I'm really happy I'll get to see it during SOI, because I know he''ll be loose and focused entirely on performing it.

 ;)

i'm hoping you and shine will have the best possible SOI experience!

with expectations like these you can't help but feel gratified that the white shirt survived to haunt us another day

anyway, the way his head whipped back to check on the fallen hat was super cute ;)

I’m really not seeing like Rostelecom Cup level of commitment and 🔥 here - but that’s jmo and that’s ok

Though I don’t think it’s fair to compare these shows to competition - he doesn’t have to worry about quads here and way less pressure
Of course, it's understandable. But one day I hope we can see that level of commitment to the performance during competitions as well even when he's doing multiple quads, because I want the world to see what Nathan is truly capable of.

I’m back!

Seems odd to say that after only hours away, but this threads moves so fast that I feel like saying that. Lots of convos to respond to.

Thanks everyone for explaining how Nathan is seen in China/HK/Taiwan. I suspected his appearance had something to do with it. But I had no idea he was thought of as a rebel! Strangely, I like that. You all know I’ve been following Nathan for a really long time. It’s not all that surprising he became so American, after all he grew up in Utah, where there are fewer Chinese America than LA. But from my perspective, his clothing and interest is what make me so relieved. I’ll explain.

Seeing some first news videos of baby Nathan, we all know that Nathan was protege kid who was good at everything. He did Gymanstics, piano, Hockey, Ballet, and figure skating. Ive seen so many times when kids like this are forced to grow up too fast. They become only an extension of their talent and lose their own individualism. That’s why I reject any claim that Nathan has a controlling mom, he does not! Nathan was allowed to grow up to be his own person. That included loving to watch basketball, dressing in athletic gear full time, skate boarding, and letting him become the laid back smirking kid we all love. He works really hard to be the best skater he can, but in the end of the day his mother made sure that he had as much normalcy as possible So Kudos to Nathan’s family! :cheer:

As for his lackluster performance last night.:confused2:

He can’t be on 24/7. He’s not a robot, in spite of what Tara might think. Think about this, he has not had a substantial break since just after the olympics. And that was two months ago. He trained for worlds, went and won worlds, went directly to Japan, then came right back to SOI. Nathan really needs a break! I can’t believe he flew for that Walmart appearance, when he should’ve taken a few days just to rejuvenate. I hope after the shows this week, he relaxes.

As for fans not liking Nathan’s performance. I haven’t been paying attention to many negative comments about Nathan in years. :laugh:It’s not that I don’t value constructive feedback. But Nathan has been a lighting rod for criticism for quite some time.

However, I have noticed that he has a lot more fans lately! Last year, this thread was so quite. I was happy to see ay activity. Now, we have so many fans that it feels like a great big family here! So use this as a place to gush over Nathan, and try to ignore the haters. All that matters it that we know that Nathan’s under a lot of pressure. He’ll bounce back like in no time.

^@Frida I agree with everything you said about his upbringing and can't help feeling his parents have done such a wonderful, wonderful job, not just with Nathan but with the rest of his siblings as well.

But I really don't think his performances were lackluster last night though? I think he was really on in both of them!

I guess I'm just an amateur but I thought he was fine in the short clip of the boys number. :confused2:

His spins weren't great in Nemesis, presumably because he's experimenting but otherwise that looked fine, too. BFTE was ok, but I still liked the Orlando one best.

Finally got the chance to the Ice Network article. Great interview.

Don’t hate me but personally I’m glad that he had the Olympic experience he had. Not that anyone would wish for someone to struggle like that but every athlete that’s been considered the best in their field has had a moment of failure that took them to the next level. It doesn’t have to even be on a world stage, it could be something like not making your school team ( like Michael Jordan when he didn’t make his high school basketball team and that pretty much fueled his entire competitive mindset and career. He never forgot it to the point where he even brought it up at his Hall of Fame speech and called out the coach who cut him just to rub it in lol). They’ve all had it, Jordan, Lebron, Brady etc.

For Nathan, this needed to happen. He’s a prodigy, not just in skating but in general and pretty much everything has come easy to him since childhood. He always got great results at super sonic speed and never really experienced failure. I mean the kid has already won almost everything you can win in skating in only his second year of seniors at 18 in the most competitive men’s field ever while simultaneously making history as he does so. No one has risen the ranks this fast, he needed to experience a moment where it doesn’t go his way. It’s the only way to grow, especially if you’re already at such an elite level. You need that trigger to get out that Super Saiyan mode lol.

And it happened at the perfect time. He’s had the most overwhelming experience at the biggest stage and he conquered it in his LP so now everything in comparison will seem so relaxed. He knows how to handle failure/pressure now. And it happened when he’s only 18 instead of his peak in 2022 and he’s already won all the other main titles so there’s no pressure of having to win this and that title outside of the Olympics. The rest is just bonus on his way to being the GOAT (imo).

I thought then that it was exactly what needed to happen and it seems he thinks so too from this interview. Can’t wait for this next quad :D

I can see more freedom in his Edge program this! His spread eagle;) Last week I was sitting really close to the ice, and I felt his emotion during the program.
I was not quite impressed when he debut it last month. But watching it in person, I finally fell in love.

love reading your guys' post:love::luv17: I think I should rein back a bit in posting and thoroughly enjoy reading in this FF. Actually I enjoyed my time in penalty box:biggrin:

my personal experience about take videos in shows or skating events is that, I also wanna watch my fav thru my naked eyes instead of thru lenses, but I almost always regretted that I did not take enough photos or videos, those are really your memory for life.

aww that post even had #陈巍

I don’t think I’ve seen that before on IG

ask him to say 陈巍 in front you when you go to Sun Valley. I give your moral support here.

巍巍
微微 this is Nathan's baby Chinese name

speaking of which,

I really think Nathan's mother is a terrific mom agree with @frida80 's intuition.

Nathan mom is not a controlling mother, instead a positive and encouraging mother. instead of pushing she created interesting games to make boring figure skating practice interesting for baby Nathan.

He said he can read pinyin so maybe write something out for him to say to his Chinese fans. LOL

like "wo ai ni"

yeah Nathan I am your biggest fan could you please read this out loud to me and to your Chinese fans as a private msg.
