2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

By the way, does anyone know will Nastya Gubanova get GP events this season? at least one?

Not guaranteed one but I'd say she looks good for the Rostelecom host spot especially considering her coach and her results at nationals

It´s not her full quote in the video.
Text form:
What will you miss about living in Russia?

EM: “I never thought this is my home and only this place is my home. My home is where my close people are. If I will change the city, yes, I will miss my city and country. But I know that all my important persons are beside me. And I hope that I will feel like home.”

Guys have any of you took into the consideration the fact that she isn't native English speaker while analysing this interview? For me it's extremely hard to speak in English in private not to mention giving interviews which will be later streamed internationally. It's really hard sometimes to translate your thoughts and if you are not willing to use a little bit of your imagination to try to understand I feel sorry for you people (also it's reason why I don't speak English because I know that if I make mistake no body will even try to take into consideration the fact that English is not my mother tongue). Not to mention elite figure skaters travel all around the world are are pretty cosmopolitan type of people. Evgenia was born in Moscow and she lived there her whole life, she stated many times that she will compete only for Russia sometimes visibly angry that somebody might even think differently.

I hoped she's guaranteed one and will have a chance on Rostelecom. But no matter what I'm eager to see her on international arena, her style and presentation are on the high level already. The next season may be good for her to stand out before "Eteri band" comes up and gain the reputation for the future.

Well, Evgenia isn't helping her Russian fans atm with interviews like that.

Do you really think she hates her country? Do you really?

She said that wherever her close people are, that’s her home. It’s supposed to be a sentimental statement. Why does everything she say has to be twisted into something political? Do you realize how absolutely ridiculous that is?

Totally true! You know there was a person on russian social network, who saw an undertone in her statement, and made some conclusions on its base. But I believe, Zhenya could say not in the way she intended to, so it is really poinless to root out for controversial phrases and make it a sensation. When she get enough practice in English speaking country then she will be able to "play" with language.

I don't understand the controversy, if you look at the quote, she literally says she will miss her city and country. What more do people want? Tears of blood because she's leaving Russia? It's like another user said, she's doing this for Russia.

whats the problem with that quote? many people say that home is where your heart is, and if her heart is with her family I dont see a problem with that. Is not her fault that some people hate their family so cant relate to what she said, seriously, grow up. Theres nothing wrong with that

I don't get what the problem of those people is. Yagudin trained in North America but was and still is Russia's darling and everyone loves him. So, what's the difference now? Medvedeva did so much for her country - over 4 seasons she got gold medals for Russia on the junior and senior circuit, if you have watched some of her videos in Moscow etc. you would always see her wearing her national team gears proudly, always representing where she comes from. And how about all the medal ceremonies - everytime singing the national anthem with her hearth, expressing her joy (not to mention that other Russia top ladies don't always do this..) She went to Switzerland, where she defenced her government, sports federation and countrymen in a case, where it wasn't sure that the country was 100% innocent. So,let me ask again? What else is she supposed to do in order to show how much she loves her country? I can't think of any Russian lady that promotes her country as she does. If you do, let me please know. :)

I think the difference with Yagudin is that at that time Russia's relations with the West were not as they are now. Now we are a kind of new cold war (dialectically visceral) and many people in Russia, even true fans, do not like her to go to an "enemy" country for them like Canada, with which Russia has burned (Canada too ) all bridges

People watch on TV the PM of Canada asking for new sanctions against Russia and in the sports section they watch (“Breaking News, Zhenya is going to live in Canada"). What do you think is the first thought of some people?

I understand the sporting reasons for which he has left but we can not ignore the world situation.

It seems to me people in general think that the Russians get mad super easy and go from zero to hater after only hearing a few sentences. It's pretty civil in Russia and trust me they won't take this interview too seriously. Zhenya will be fine, I for one think it was a delightful interview.

Can you describe what happened in the video? I'm really curious.

Nothing special in fact. The event took place on exhibition gala in 2015, if I'm not mistaken, so she approached someone and expressed her "emotions" (which was in fact a swearing), this moment was catched on video, and honestly became rather popular in russian network. But now I cannot find it anywhere, unfortunately.

Then again, my perception of the situation is she's making this change to further her career and her switching coaches and moving abroad is in no way a slight against Russia. In my opinion that is not traitorous our unpatriotic in the least bit.
I agree with you completely, hope Zhenya will not pay attention on hate and nagativity around her. And now she is finally out of the touch
Although she declares that she loves Russia and this move is forcedly, I think it is useful for her not only in professional career as a skater, but also in her future. She will live in another country, will get to know another culture, new friends and so on. She'll gain that necessary experience, and probaly when it comes to the choice where to live she won't prefer to come back. Even in this way noone has a right to judge her considering unpatriotic, it is her own life and she should make a decision that is good her, avoiding "advices" from outside.

I hope you're right. I like Russians, their mentality and how they always try to do the best in order to preserve their culture. I also come from an Eastern European country and we have a similar type of thinking in terms of patriotism. So, I understand that some of the folks are not happy. However, Meds has showed that she loves her country and is proud to represent it. It's not like she has complained about being Russian and just got the first available ticket to get away from there....

I can‘t decide whether I find this discussion ridiculous or just really sad. I’d say probably both. Med‘s the one who had her national flag hidden underneath her scarf at the Olympic Games. Not even considering she was one of those sent to Switzerland to persuade them to let Russia even compete at these Games in the first place. She won two World titles, European titles, GPF titles and an OSM for Russia, not to mention her countless other medals. She leaves Russia to improve and as a result - get even more medals for it. She‘s stated countless times how much she loves her country. And now people will try to twist her into this person who doesn‘t feel at home in Russia or some other bullshit because she literally just used a saying in a language that‘s not even her mothertongue?

„Home is where the hearth is.“ That‘s what she meant when she said home is, where her close ones are. She literally said she‘ll miss Russia, of course, but will be fine because she has her loved ones with her.

Where on Earth is there anything about narrow minded locals or not being proud of her nation?

It‘s okay to criticize her flutz. Her tanos. Her miming. Her programs. Heck, even her skating as a whole. It‘s totally okay to not like her. But trying to make her look like this horrible, horrible person by constantly twisting her words or misinterpeting something she said and quoting it wrongly, is not.

And to close this discussion: She‘ll be fine in Canada, no matter what her fellow Russians (or non Russians, or anybody else who hates her) think about this. And we‘ll see next season how this is going to work out. So let‘s be calm and discuss something else.

I think she should be very careful with her choise of words. There were like a dosen ways to say she wants to feel at home in Toronto. IDK she choosed this awkward and controversial way to say it. Like as if her Motherland is where her slippers are (I'm exagerating but this how it sound to many many people in Russia).

P.S. The only exuse I can find is a lack of knowledge in English language. Other than that is sounds like I said above.
