2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Yes, Daria should turn senior now because she's guaranteed GP events and if she waits, she'll be overshadowed by the 4A (Anna, Alena, Alexandra, Anastasia Tarakanova)

I'm not sure about Gulyakova. I think she should because while she's unlikely to get a GP, she's even more unlikely to get a JGP, and she can at least do challenger events as a senior.

It’s kind of a lose-lose situation for Gulyakova.☹️ If she stays junior she risks getting overshadowed by the 4A and even more upcomers we haven’t heard of yet. If she goes up to senior, she might get , like, Finlandia and nothing else.

That reminds me... there's 10 challenger events...last year Russia sent ladies to 7 events, the ones not in the US and Canada, and they didn't send anyone to Nebelhorn, but they probably will considering that it's not the qualifier this year. So let's say that they send ladies to 7 events (they might not send anyone to Asian Open in Thailand, and the US and Canada seem to be off the table for a while) Last year, 5 of the 7 events they sent ladies to had 3 entries, and the other 2 had 2. So let's say 19 entries. If each of the grand prix girls want one, that means that 9 girls will already have slots. So 10 available slots.

I would give 2 slots each to the following:
-Anastasia Gulyakova
-Serafima Sakhanovich
-Valeria Mikhailova
-Sofia Samodurova
-Anna Pogorilaya (she wants to do CS events this year and is back to training, and she's unlikely to get a GP invite at this point)

If there's an extra slot, I'd give it to Anna Tarusina, who will probably be on the JGP this year but is senior eligible. I picked her over Leonova or Fedichkina because she is in the national team over them. That's also how I picked the ones who get 2, in addition to results this past year and before.

Pogo is back to training. Right now she is preparing for shows in Japan.
She has to train under close medical supervision, and will have to do it until the end of her career. She says she will be at test skates, and then some CS.
She didn't get new programs yet, and its still not defined who will choreograph.
Pogo already got back her triples, including 3Lz. She still doesnt do 3Lz-3T, but already does the 3F and 3S combos.

Glad to hear she's able to skate and jump again. I hope that someone finally taught her a safer way to fall because I don't know if I can take watching her crash again in such a scary way

nice! Maybe its better to do last season program again? She only perform SP 2 times and FS 1 times (which is total disaster sadly...) she can watered down the technical side if she's not there yet, and ditching the layback spin completely if possible...just seeing her skating again make me so happy!

Her SP was good from what I remember, but I’d like to see her do something other than black swan for the FS.

Isn't the layback required, though? I'm not optimistic that she'll be able to do one, especially one with even 1/2 Biellmanns. I destroyed my back during a Biellmann 15 years ago, and I cannot risk stretching/arching my back severely ever again. Back issues especially when young only get worse the older you get. Good luck to her. I don't see it happening.

I have a question for my Russian friends. What has the reaction been to Evgenia moving to Canada? Do people care? Personally, if I heard that Bradie wanted to move and train with Plushy, I think it would great for her. Are people excited for Med to have a new environment and a new coach?

The layback is not required anymore (for one or two seasons now I think), so that won't be a problem.

No, the beilmann isn’t required anymore, thank goodness. It’s just that doing a layback into the haircutter into the beilmann gets you the most points of any of the spins. That’s why you see it in practically every routine.

Sorry, I meant that the layback wasn’t required anymore.

Some skaters shouldn’t ever do a layback because it looks very unattractive/ uncomfortable/ ungainly.

Specially considering the current political situation, there is a certain hostility.
I dunno, i think if she went to train in Europe, it would be fine. But Canada, after all the Olympic stuff...
Also your average russian is very grumpy when sees budget money spent abroad.

PS: TBH think of an average american, right now, considering all the sanctions, russian hacking and whatever media paranoia. Will this person be happy if american government pays Bradie to go train in Russia with a Russian coach?

Heh. I hear ya. It's just that Sasha is my favorite name, and likely the name I'll use if I ever have a daughter, so I enjoy using it every chance I get!

^^ Its that in Russia, Sasha is not a name. It is a pet name for Alexandr / Alexandra.

That's a good question. As I've said before, I loved being in Russia and when I watch Plushy's Academy, I don't see or hear anything about Politics. When I was there, things were still icy between our countries but we never talked about it when I was there. They never talked about it and neither did we. We talked about life as we saw it. We were young and we talked about culture, and it was fun to discover how much we actually had in common. I have always felt that the arts brought us together.

Of course, there is prejudice against American and Canadian officials, which probably somewhat extends to Orser, but most people don't care about it as much as about Zhenya's abrupt departure from Eteri and her latest interview with Elle.

Also consider that Russians perceive Eteri as a normal person, not an incarnation of evil. :)

If your companions spoke English, then they likely had enough social skills and a grasp of the Western world view not to raise political issues with the guest.

And overall russian culture (at least until recently) has an overall tradition of respecting the teachers / coaches. So for example in school, the kids give their teachers gifts and flowers and so on. The teachers are not seen as a workforce hired to teach the kids, but as... teachers.
So I also see how many people can frown upon the split with Eteri because that is just not how you leave a teacher. You tell beforehand, and come with flowers / chocolate to say farewell.

USA and Canada have no chances now to catch but I think Japan is on the same way as Russia.
Sooner or later, Japan and Korea will catch up for sure. Popularity, suitable body types for fs and great work ethic - features of Eteri's school, just spread over whole fs population.
Maybe China and singular talents from North America will join from time to time, but the main battle will be between the "big three".

I think, it's all about tactics. Strategically at the moment Russia is so much stronger in ladies than anybody else that 16 or 17 year limit would matter little when we think of the next Olympics. It's going at full speed now to the status-quo in rythmic gymnastics and synchronized swimming.

Yes but I keep coming back to the fact that Russia wouldn't be this dominant without Sambo70.

Like of course the potential is there, there are soo many talented skaters in Russia but Eteri/Sergei/Daniil brought the most important results at Worlds 2017, at the Olympics, even in juniors it's always all about their skaters.

Why none of the other russian coaches has been able to replicate the same model and build their own strong group: from what i've seen last season in juniors, Svetlana Panova is trying to do something similar, but again i haven't seen her coaching skaters in seniors, i don't know if she does only want to coach junior skaters. The other coaches have 1 or 2 talents and that's pretty much it.

Plus is anyone using the Sochi rink now? cause that starts to feel like a giant waste.

It is difficult to compete with other coaches, perhaps this is due to the fact that the group Eteri take the best skaters from other coaches who are less famous. Therefore, it is difficult to compete with Sambo-70. Trusova, Kostornaya, Shcherbakova, Tarakanova were not originally in the group Eteri.
