I can't believe it, this came out of nowhere. Condolescence to his family and friends. What a tragic and horrible crime - and in broad daylight! Some people really don't have any shame or conscience in them. Denis will be forever remembered as a kind person and an extraordinary talent, who rised despite all injuries, lack of training or coaching facilities, beyond himself and made himself as well as his country proud.
His tragic passing reminds us to be caring and kind to the people around us, as life can be over in a blink of an eye. I'm heartbroken by these sudden news ...

Just out of curiosity, how is Kazajstan about resolving crime? I mean is there a high or low rate of impunity?

I just cry for half an hour . This is such a sad news, I can not understand to the end.
Condolences to the family and friends of Denis. This is a huge loss for everyone.

I hope the criminals will be caught and they will answer with all the severity of the law, and I hope that the court of God will punish them for extinguished out such a star as Denis Ten.

I’m sitting at the rink watching my daughter’s summer skating session, and randomly went on my phone to check my Facebook account. This horrible tragedy popped up first on my newsfeed. I’m crying and heartbroken. :sad21: Despite the fact that very few of us on these forums personally knew Denis, this still is an enormous, tragic, painful loss for everyone with any involvement in the international skating community: athletes, coaches, judges, fans, the budding emergence of Kazakhstani talent within the sport - largely because of Denis himself, and the country of Kazakhstan in its entirety. This world is a horrible place sometimes. RIP Denis, thank you for sharing your talent, joy, and passion for this sport with us. For never giving up, persevering through struggles, blowing us all away with your beautiful free program in Sochi, climbing up in the short program standings and winning the bronze medal. You were such a genuine ambassador for figure skating.

Denis is the second athlete from my two favourite sports to pass away under tragic circumstances this week. Retired NHL goaltender Ray Emery drowned in Lake Ontario last Sunday, off the shores of Hamilton, the city I live in. He was only 35.

I believe I can say with 99.9% certainty that the two of them did not know each other in any capacity, but perhaps they are both skating around up there, on the rink beyond the sky.

I just adore Denis's 2010 SP to Sing Sing Sing. I was already a fan of his after discovering him in his 2009 Worlds free program, along with everyone else, but this SP was just struck me with his incredible energy and how he fed on the great crowd reaction at the end. It looks like his Olympic performance was taken off youtube for copyright, but I found his Worlds.

I'm shocked and heartbroken. Words are utterly meaningless when it comes to a senseless tragedy like this. It puts so many things into perspective. He was one of my favourite skaters and I will always keep his beautiful performances in my heart. My deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Here is a good article about the rampant crime in Kazakstan....but really, this is a world wide problem. Unfortunate but the peoples of the world seem to have lost the stomach to deal with gangs and criminals...Denis could have been killed over the mirrors of his car in Spokane, London, or Chicago or Moscow....

The fact that this article exist is sad... but I wanted to know if police in Kazajstan is effective in catching the criminals... it´s tragic what happened, but it would be unthinkable that the crime would go with out punishment...

Also, for the people that know the area, is it a not popular area? I saw a tweet that say the attack could have happened about noon and that Denis arrive to the hospital until 15:23pm? Almost 3 hours later?! I mean sorry about this type of question, I just want to understand, maybe... how this can to happened

This terrible, tragic news has just become the last thing I saw before lying down to sleep (if I do get any sleep at all tonight, that is -- it's almost 2 a.m. here now and I'm wide awake watching videos of Denis Ten). What a loss, just absolutely heartbreaking for its senselessness. I am so sad that he never got the chance to wrap up his career the way he would have wanted (and furious at the killers)... But also thankful for these moments he has left us, especially Sochi 2014.

I first saw Denis skate in the 2009 Worlds in Los Angeles where he jumped from 17th in the sp to 6th in the fs to finish 8th overall. You couldn't take your eyes off him. His charisma reached into every seat in the arena. You knew he was going to become a very special skater in the years to come. For the next nine years he never disappointed--despite how the judges had to score at times--because there was always heart in the performance.

Although I never met him, I feel so heartbroken. I can't imagine what his family and friends are going through right now. I hope they know that one anonymous fan in the stands was touched greatly by him.
