Anna Pogorilaya

So an Instagram post on Plushenko’s IG leads me to believe Anna will be a star in one of Plushy’s shows next month! “Opera on Ice” if I recall. Exciting that she’s still getting show opportunities!
Does anyone know if she’s going to be in any challengers?

So Anna is going to compete this season. She keeps her short program from last season, but doesn't keep the free and will skate to Frida instead. First we will see her at the Russian Test skates. After that, who knows. Source is Anna Tsareva herself.

I'm hoping she'll get a Challenger event, or, if Rostelecom is kind gets the host pick there. It hasn't been so long that she won this thing.

I hope she's healthy enough to compete. Idk, if I can handle another breakdown and I'm sure she feels the same.

She said she'll be training under constant medical supervision, which thought reassures me a little. At least she won't be told she's just being hysterical…

I'm wishing her the best of health & success this season - and happiness always.:)

That's indeed good to hear. I'm always worried about her.

That is not Plushenko's show but he performed on every show. That is an Italian famous show in Verona in the ancient Arena. There were gladiators in the past and skaters now. For two years the show's name was Intimissimi on ice but this year Opera on ice again. There are many videos on YT.

Anna changed her name on Instagram to Anna Nevskaya. I know she said she wanted to keep Pogorilaya for figure skating, but perhaps she won't. Let's see.

She very well might still compete under it but not use it in daily life. St. Aleksandr Nevsky was a prince who saved Russia (or what would eventually become Russia) from the Northern Crusades. If that were my husband's surname, I'd sure want to use it, too!

Interesting! Is there a meaning to the name? In Germany surnames are mostly jobs people did in the middle ages.... ;)

I have to share this very cute photo from Anna as a young schoolgirl, yes, the summer holidays are really a thing of the past, everyone! But cheer up, the skating season will start soon! (Hopefully with a happy Anna)

Prince Alexander's surname was Rurikovich (1000 years ago Russian surnames sounded like patronyms or Serb surnames today), while Nevsky ('of Neva') was his nickname after he won the Battle of the Neva at the age of 20.

The modern surname Nevsky likely comes from someone who moved from Neva to another region, or maybe was given to some orphan after the saint.

Awww, how cute!

Yes, it means "from the Neva River". I think most names ending in "-sky" come from place names. Also, many of them were originally Polish. Job-related surnames definitely exist in Russia as well. Some are in the top 10 most common (e.g. Kuznetsov(a)=of a smith), while some are quite rare. Surnames from ancestors' names (e.g. Mishin(a)=descendant of Misha) or from nature (Medvedev(a)=of a bear, Morozov(a)=of frost) are also very common.

Smiths are everywhere. Kuznetsov and Koval(enko) are among the most popular surnames in Russia and Ukraine, something like Smith and Schmidt.

As for the 'natural' surnames, they come from nicknames.

Would like to know that as well. I hope she's healthy. Better not force herself, if she's not ready. If she's ready though, I wonder why she didn't go. She needs to get out there, so that everyone is aware that she's still alive and well.

Can you please translate this video?

very tough moment for Pogo :palmf:
Thanks!

You already asked 4 days ago. :)

T: Now you will practice the free program the same way you practiced the short, what else can we do? Why are you so lifeless today, did your legs got paralytic or what?
P: When I tried to calm myself down, you instead started [gesturing "pumping up"].
T: Don't you think you need to skate the entire program more often? Not just once a week, more often.
P: Did I look lifeless in the free?
T: You barely moved there, watch the recording.
P: I will. I felt much better and easier this time.
T: Then how should you skate to feel heavier than this? It's terrible to go and fail like this. You seem to turn your brain off, you don't control your body at all.
P: Don't control, but somehow pull it off, right? What a surprise.
T: What did you pull off, two jump out of seven? Anya, at least get some speed, you do loop-Euler-Salchow on the spot. You are lifeless. But in practice [drowned out by applause]. It's just painful to watch this.
P: Didn't I do the entry into the spin?
T: Anya, look at it in slow motion later, how you skated on a wooden legs.
P: Look how you pestered me.
T: Then I won't approach you at all. Go to the next competition alone, if you want so. You must prepare properly. Attend to trainings, skate the programs fully.
P: I attend to trainings and skate the programs fully.
[Tsareva's answer was drowned out by applause]

yes but note that this video is different, you don’t have any commentary and I think you can hear better the conversation, so I guess you have been able to translate almost everything ? btw thanks!
