Saga? In which way? Just being curious because I mostly found the programs to be fitting to the skater‘s personality. Lipnitskaya - probably the greatest example, specifially asked for SL even though no one approved of it at first. It was her wish. Medvedeva - true about her 2017 FS. She stated later that she didn‘t like it initially but grew to appreciate it as it brought results. So maybe that one counts. Zagitova - nothing too mature about Black Swan and DQ, rather on the contrary, always belittled for her ”juniorish“ programs. Kostornaya - nothing too mature for her as far as I can see. Trusova - that Big Spender SP was weird but it was used more of a fun program and not in the context many want to see it as. Maybe that one could count. Shcherbakova - last year‘s programs fit her perfectly, same with the SP this season. Maybe she isn‘t yet ready to fully pull off the FS music even though I‘d want to give her time to grow into it. Nastya Tarakanova’s programs (when she was still with Eteri) captured her spirit brilliantly, nothing too mature about the choreography either. I don’t know Usacheva‘s music to be honest so I cannot say anything about that. But from the others?

Of course that‘s only how I see it. So I‘d be interested what kind of ”saga“ you see there. :)

I was more just referring to Sasha's Big Spender program, which I think most agree was pretty cringeworthy, even if she performed it well and had fun with it. Her Your Heart is as Black as Night program wasn't super appropriate either :hopelessness:

tbh, not-English speakers usually don't listen to words. I mean, of course I can understand the text (often very roughly, and if he/she speaks clearly, but still) if I concentrate and switch to, as I call it, the "translation mode". But it's hard, and in the usual state, all your songs are heard for me approximate so "bla-bla-bla I bla-bla-bla you bla-bla loooove". When I remebered Big Spender it's like "ta-da-da, pam-param, toonts-toonts, Big Spendeeeer".

Yeah, I completely understand that. It's the same way for me when I listen to music in other languages. I don't think it was intentionally inappropriate, but as an native English speaker I was like YIIIIIIKKKKKEEEESSSSS
 
I did get the lyrics and it's actually a song that always made me cringe when i heard it somewhere lmao. When i first heard Sasha would skate to that i was like "TF? she's 13" but when i saw the program itself i thought it was fine. Nothing about it was inappropriate or reminded us of what the lyrics were about and they managed to turn a controversial music choice to something youthful and fun. I personally really loved that program (unlike the FS which was weird in my opinion but this year's FS already looks a lot more promising).
 
I also really liked Sashas short last year unless i listened to the lyrics to closely. Because the lyrics was certenly inapropriate for someone who is 13. I also think it was made worse that her bodytype is verry childlike still and looks to be younger than she really is making t feal eaven more inapropriate when analysing the lyrics.

To be honest I don’t think that when I was thirteen I’d have been bothered by this song or understood all the fuss, or even really have considered it particularly inappropriate, but then I think I’m younger than a lot of posters here. Plus neither Sasha’s nor Danil’s first language is English (I don’t know if Trusova speaks it at all) and we should consider that.

But as a viewer I agreed with you; she looked like she was 10 because she’s so tiny, and combined with literally just one moment of the choreo that was obviously sexual, the whole program just became awkward for me. But I think the rest of the choreo and her performance was fine; she carried the energy really well.

I speak English too and yet I wouldn’t know the words. English is my second language, so I am not always attuned to listening the words. Sometimes you can get into song without really listening to words. For Eteri English is her second language too so she may also not always listens to words.

I love those opening dance movies. Cool. I'm not crazy about the costume or the music, but I do dig the dance.
 
I'm not going to use "not speaking English" as an excuse for not paying attention to the words in a program when the coach/choreographer use English voiceovers (not even sung lyrics - literal talking voiceovers) in other programs they are responsible for.

So what? It doesn't matter if the language is not your native, or at least you do not speak it every day. It is not easy for me to express such a difficult (for verbalization) idea in a non-native language (if you know a foreign language, it will be easier for you to understand me), so I will try to use "images", metaphors to explain to you. Words in their native language, they like what I see with my own eyes right now - everything is clear and brightly. Translated in my mind words, they are like memories or my reflections on an object or phenomenon - I can cause them (with effort) in my mind, but the images will be shaky, vague, gray. Therefore, the meanings in a foreign language are not fully perceived as "real", filled with a living breath. Hmmm... I'm not sure that I was able to convey to you my feelings :)
 
English is an incredibly nuanced and slangy language. Words often mean two different things and that is before we even get into innuendo and irony. A person might be fluently bilingual but unless they are also exposed to a lot of English pop culture they are unlikely to know that some words have weird double meanings. This does not even take into account the number of words that sound just like other words but mean different things.

The French are very proud of the "Le mot vrai" as the overriding rule of their language. There is a right word and a right word for everything and every tense has a proper conjugation. English is so much more loosy-goosy. I mean take the whole double negative rule. I wonder how many non English speakers that trips up.

Also we make up words new words in English all the time. I doubt that is the case in many other languages.

BTW.. I'm always impressed by how well most of you non English as a first language people write. It's very, very impressive. I know sometimes people might tease but in the end know that most of us are pretty impressed and if we correct you or ask questions it is just to either aid you or so we can understand what you meant better.:cool14::bow::cool2::gclap::medal"

But by the same logic, for those of us who are native speakers a song like full of double entendres and innuendo like 'Big Spender' evokes images that are not ignorable.

And are undeniably 'adult content' and present an unseemly image for a teenaged girl.

In terms of Eteri, it's hard to know. She lived and worked in an English milieu for some time, but she's been back in Russia for more than a decade. So, her intuition about how Anglophones would react may not be as acute as it once was.

Certainly, gestures have different meaning in different cultures, but also different dance and theatric traditions.

Orlov wrote earlier about his concern that something may be lost with Zhenya skating to choreography detached from the gestural and movement code established in Russian ballet, character dance, and theatre.

These are basically visual memes...

And if one knows the origin or has seen it across many performances, it speaks and gives meaning that it will not to others.

I have to say that I consider myself to be pretty easy going but I'm not super comfortable with a 14 year old skating to big spender or my heart belongs to daddy or a bunch of britney spears or christina A. songs. I'm not sure why we feel this need to rush young women into adulthood. Let them be 14 for as long as possible.

As John Cougar Mellencamp would remind us all: Hold on to 16 as long as you can, changes come along real soon makes us women and men.

Asking someone if they are from the bible belt can be construed as insulting on a personal level. It implies that they are narrow minded. It is insulting to people from the bible belt (because many are not narrow minded or really believe in their opinions and see it as correct). Let's be careful with name calling please.

EDITED because I didn't like the way I put what I said in last sentence and it wasn't really what I meant anyway.
