2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I'm betting that they're going for 8-6 this time. It's better than 9-5 like the last season.

the best three between: Tarusina/Kanysheva/Tarakanova/Vasilieva/Sinitsina will get the second stage. And I think Sinitsyna is out of the race.

Hi. I heard a rumor today in the icerink that I am sceptical about and thought this was the best place to find answers. I was told that a 14yo russian (Trusova?) landed a quad Axel today (or sometime recently). Is there any proof somewere that this is true? Or is it as I thinkt that they are confusing axel with lutz?

Btw. I wouldnt call the sorce of this trustworty but i promised to find out

I'd imagine that if Tarakanova does better, she'll get JGP 7 instead

Who knows... it's still possible, even if unlikely, that both Tarakanova and Vasilieva will did bad and the RusFed may go for Sinitsyna. A chance to a ninth skater, at the last event, would be really pointless.

As far as anyone reliably knows, Trusova hasn’t landed 3A on ice yet, let alone 4A (their teachers tend to post videos when they land quads or 3A, and we haven’t seen a 3A video from Trusova yet). But she did land a 4Lz (called underrotated, but honestly debatable) in JGP Kaunas very recently.

So it’s likely that your source simply mixed up 4Lz with 4A.

Thanks! I knew about the Lutz in Kaunas and as you say it is very unlikely since we have no evidece of 3A yet

I fully agree with you on that and I tried to say similar stuff in the test skates thread (with little support). It looks like people just happy that she is with Orser and will praize her no matter what she does. This reminds me the situation in competition threads a while ago but with a substantial twist: good skaters like So-Youn-Park perform: a waterfall of compliments. Medvedeva performs: a lot of critique.

But the reality is that next season Trusova, Kostornaya, and Scherbakova all may go senior. If they are on the right junior track this season (so far they are) they will enter with big TES and decent pcs. If Medvedeva wants to be in the team next season there is no "luxury" of long-term goals and slow improvements - she has to be a fierce competitor this season to preserve her reputation and her pcs cushion.

This season she, Alina, Maria, Polina, Liza, and may be Daria and even less likely Elena are contenders for the team spots. I agree that full meltdowns aside she will get it. Next season is a different beast. And Hanyu example that some profess is irrelevant. He was innovator pushing the boundaries at that time. Zhenya is an incumbent with the past quad tech so far.

Yep literally this.
I really don´t see how "we are focused on Beijing" and "we are continuously working on stuff" can work in the intense competition of the Russian Team.
This season, i would say, she is 100% set - i mean, TAT even said in an interview that Zhenya doesnt need to go to rusnats, because "we know and trust her", "she will compete before that, she will do GP, we all will see her", "going to Saransk means she will waste 15 days [...] they should give her time to work with her coach, and not acclimatize every 15 days". Knowing rusfed and TAT, I don´t see Zhenya not making the euros and worlds team this season, no matter what.
But next season... Every time she doesnt win gold is a dent on her rep and PCs cushion. Look at Sotnikova and how rusfed propped her and still she couldnt get the spots.

She's just a placeholder for now.

That's true. I think a lot will depend on how Tarakanova fares this weekend. If she can't hold off Young You then that's 2 spots open for someone like Vasilieva or Gubanova to have chance counting Sinitsyna's second spot.

I just don't see any way they can put Vasilieva in Ostrava against Araki and Kim. It could cost spots in the final if both are able to podium. They need to put someone very consistent there. Tarusina would be good, she's a rock. The spin was a one time error that I'm sure has been worked out. Vasilieva could have Ljubljana where there is much less competition and better chance she could take silver. Then Yerevan goes to Kanysheva and the highest of Tarakanova/Vasilieva/Sinitsyna.

They cannot be serious with Vasilieva. :palmf:

3L+3Lo plus she stood up. Thats better than some people do.

Yes, they can be.
She was 6th last year at junior nationals, ahead of Tarakanova, Sinitsyna, and Kanysheva. (Tarusina wasn't there).

Gubanova may have stood up on 3Lz-3Lo but she also had two called URs and several uncalled ones, was noticeably slower and more tired than before, and pretty seriously messed up her spins. Plus, despite being the oldest competitor by over a year, she was held off the top two spots by two girls four years younger than her.

Well... it‘s four years till Beijing. That’s a lot of time. A lot of things can happen. We should probably just wait and see. Evgenia made the best choice she could have made considering that she felt like she needed a change. She chose the only coach that is currently not seen as a step down from Eteri. Now we‘ll see how this is going to work out and whether she‘s going to succeed or not. I can see the point of the competition in Russia and that this strategy might backfire and I actually worry about this, too but since I‘m in no position to judge, I will gladly trust Evgenia who‘s shown before that she‘s a clever, determined girl and her new coach who also seems like he knows what he‘s doing. They will give it their all and whether they will make it remains to be seen. But I think it‘s too early to write anyone off.

Agreed and i'd also add that Hanyu's competition in Japan is basically only Uno, so there is always at least one spot for him, while in Russia there are other skaters that can really challenge her.

I'd say even this season is not that predictable as it may seems, especially if Liza becomes consistent even with the 3A, Alina continues to win everything, plus CSKA inflation for Maria, Polina, Elena and Anastasia, the Konstantinova inflation (we'll see how that changes this season), and Eteri's juniors (they can't go to worlds but they always grab a medal every year at RN) there is already a huge competition.

Yep literally this.

My guess is that Brian will try to build that "star quality" into Evgenia as he did with Kim and Hanyu, so she can win with huge PCS no matter what even without the most difficult programs, but it's hard to win against 3 quads from Trusova anyway.

TAT is very influential but she doesn't represent RusFed, they don't all think like her, as we saw last year there were even some that wanted to remove her place as commentator. Evgenia still has to skate at RN and get one of the three spots to go to Euro and Worlds.

Anyway, I definitely think it's possible that when Trusova, Kostornaia, and Shcherbakova (typing these names all out at once is tiring!! lol) all move up, assuming all are healthy and capable of what they are now, Evgenia might not make the 2020 Worlds team (which would actually devastate me because that will be the first international skating competition I EVER go to see live!!!). But in 2021 and 2022? Anything could happen, and if Evgenia stays consistent, healthy and achieves Carolina-level PCS (which are always there despite how many technical mistakes she makes) and gradually increases her tech, anything is possible. (It's possible that Trusova will have 5 quads in Beijing 2022. It's possible she won't even be there. Who knows?)

Anyway, you keep criticizing Evgenia and Orser's strategy - but I'm genuinely curious as to what you think that she should do instead? She's recovering from injury, which puts limits on what they can do without too much risk. I think as long as she stays consistent this season and makes the GPF and Worlds podiums, she's in a favorable enough position - and a far better position than any other Russian lady will be after the age of 18. (Plus, I think the 4S could be a possibility for next season.)

but. She already has it. The "star quality". She's already getting huge PCS no matter what even without the most difficult programs.
I don't see difference. It didn't help Evgenia the last season. And won't help against Sasha and clean Alina and some others.
