2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Yep, this is the most important thing. Because she doesn't have much of a competitive advantage if she's not Russia's #1, especially if her flutz starts getting called(which I assume it would if she were to be Russia's #3 for instance).

Strange, considering that it's not a competition.

They hid the thread dedicated to a non-competition behind the paywall? Ok.

And you’re surprised? The Fan Fests are next. Soon you’ll be paying to discuss any skater who isn’t retired.

While a minor competition, it is still considered a competition nonetheless, and has been merged with the existing thread in the Russian Nationals folder where there are links for entries, schedule, live streams, etc. This is no different from previous years. We apologize for not leaving a redirect.

But there are no scores so how can it be a competition?

I generally agree. Her weaknesses as a skater have nothing to do with her weight, or her body shape.

Doug Haw seemed to suggest that merely losing weight would make the judges give her higher scores because of a bias the judges have toward more thin-looking, waify skaters. I'm not sure if that's the case or not, but I think it is harmful to suggest that skaters should lose weight to get higher scores when the sport is already full of eating disorders.

if that was the case, Osmond wouldnt be World Champion, because she also has a more athletic build.
I think judges don´t really care about body tipe.

It probably varies from judge to judge. Tonya and Midori were penalized for not having the more "graceful" (aka waif-thin) type of body type. There are probably a lot of old-school judges out there who are like that, too. And then there are probably a lot of judges who do not think that way.

But I wouldn't underestimate how obsessed the entire sport is with weight and body type. Even the men like Adam Rippon suffer from it. It's crazy and it needs to change.

It's absolutely not considered a competetition and never ever was. Nobody is competing with each other. Test skates sole purpouse is to take a look at what skaters done over summer and to give them recommendations - it's a quality control. Also it's the first big meet up for all skating community at the beginning of the season. To call it a competition just makes zero sence, you've just missed the point of it all :(

You are correct, however, it is still considered an "event". Historically, all local, sectional, regional events such as this have been posted in their respective National threads in the Competition Section. This season is no different.

no. she won't. It's too late for Alina to train them.
Eteri simply won't let her do it. Because Alina is nowhere near ready for it.

this is what i was thinking...i wonder if eteri will turn her focus more towards the juniors now over alina...she's not 18, but she's "older." even though she just won the olympics, i'm afraid if she can't keep up with them in the next couple years she'll be on the way out with eteri like julia and evgenia.

If you guys wonder where the Russian test skates thread disappeared, it has been moved to the Competitions sections (National Events - Russia). It took me a while to find it and was frustrated because this thread shouldn't be lost.

Actaully with what it denigrated into - I wish they had buried it so deep it could never be found again.

It's not really about Eteri turning her attention to the juniors more than Alina. Simply put, the competition is tough within their group and their country, and those most deserving will get further, as it should be. I'm sure they all get attention within the group, but those who are better will go to international competition, giving you the impression that Eteri "focuses" more on them; but that's not it, or at least we wouldn't know. But the fact that she is olympic champion, or her age, wouldn't matter, it's based on merit. None of the skaters can rely on their previous accomplishments, because the others would not have had the same opportunities; they can only compare what they do in the present. It sucks that there is so much talent and only 3 spots for big competitions, but that is sport and ladies figure skating is very popular Russia.

Because they have good inside sources, there aren't many podcasts about figure skating with knowledge about the athletes, how things work from a skater perspective,...

Unfortunately then they have dozens of episodes like this, where it almost feels like they make bold claims and throw shades and bash even on 13ys old girls, almost hoping ISU listens to them. Judging their guests, you realize how much envy is shared even with coaches and choreographers, there are many Douglas Haw out there.

They are nothing to me but 2 guys with too much money and time on their hands.
So they invented themselves into FS "experts" with a nasty streak a mile long.
They love the fawning attention that their little flock of followers give them.

I much prefer the other "rich guy" who reports on skating.
He actually seems respectful for the most part.

These two are caricatures - like the cranky old guys from the Muppets, or the "film critics" on In Living Color".
Except the TSL guys aren't even funny (to me anyways)

Unfortunately, FS doesn't get enough media coverage, so they are able to snag interviews with skaters.

They saw a niche - and they jumped on it.

Uhm, this is monitoring and feedback, not competition or qualifications.

While other countries don't allow video of their national team monitoring events, they all have them: USFA Champs, Skate Canada High Performance Camp.

These are not like regionals or sectionals or summer series.

They aren't scored.

Yes we know. The thread was moved back to the Edge although it has historically been in the National Threads in the Comp sections.

Do they have money?

Lombardia Trophy: Tuktamysheva, Samodurova
First stage of Russian Cup: too many good entries to name
Local Russian competition: Alena Zhilina

please tell me if this sort of post violates competition chat rules
