2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

It's a shame for Alina but these things do happen. We will have to wait for the Japan Open I guess.

Sucks for her, but at least she has more time to prepare for the bigger competition. She didn't look too ready at the test skates.... so hopefully she will not fret over this and focus on the bigger competition (and sort her documents).

It's not the end of the world though: this is a challenger event not a big one, and she has an high ranking already.

Seems odd that she traveled internationally all off-season without issue. If it's a document issue it makes her team look bad that they didn't make sure everything was in order before competition season - even if its a matter of 1 line being filled out weird, what if border control/customs didn't notice it till the GPF or Europeans where it costs her a major medal?

I will say had she performed well at test skates I don't think anyone would be making much of this, but since she performed poorly and was filmed crying in the corner of the arena - it makes it look very fishy.... But thanks Russian figure skating, we probably needed a bit of gossip to hold us over a few weeks till the GP series

Border control / customs are weird.
Just from my own experience, i seen the following things happen:
1. stamp passports with wrong date
2. accept passports that are not valid anymore (hi, russian border control, last year i traveled with my old passport by mistake and you people still took it and didnt even blink)
3. deny entry for weird and / or fairly illegal reasons (i got entry denied for reasons such as another border control stamp my passport wrong, or for wearing a bloodstained shirt after some luggage fell on me on the plane causing a major nose bleed, hi UK, I still hate you people for not letting me go out and use my insurance)
4. nearly deny entry over crappy handwriting (i filled in some numbers, and appearently my 9 looks a lot like 4, though nobody complained of it before).
5. Not looking at stuff at all (i just found out that i basically spent all my teenage years traveling around with the parental consent docs invalid, since my dad signed them only once and then i used them for nearly 10 years, while they had to be renewed every year lols).

then there were tons of stories in this thread of weird border stuff.

Those folks sometimes just pick on some weird stuff, and it is very hard to change their decision, since you just have so much time until your flight, and complaining can make things even worse.

what likely happened is that they didnt like something at the parental consent paper, and then she could either try next day to see if they let it slide (which could actually happen, but no guarantees) or WD. Since it was pretty close to the event, her team chose to WD which is the safe option.

As for crying in the corner of the arena, yep, with all the pressure, with TAT and many other folks being mean about her, with all the zhenya banners and not a single one alina banner on the rink, i am not surprised she was upset.

Normally, I wouldn't either, it happens. But I think there is more to the story, and I'm a bit skeptical.. I don't think Alina is 100% ready to go for one thing. which wouldn't be an issue except she is the reigning Olympic champion, and more is expected of her. It seems to me, that as famous as she is, even if there was a defect, it could be corrected in time for her to compete. It would seem that Slovakia would find a way to recitify the situation, after all, her name sells tickets and puts the butts in the seats.

It wasn't Slovakia that prevented her from staying or coming. It was Russia that prevented her from leaving. She didn't even leave Moscow.

taylorpowers23: Is Alina Zagitova still competing?

tanjaflade: @taylorpowers23 No, she was not allowed to leave the country as a minor because a document was missing.

schwab228: did you speak with a russian athlete/coach about it or are you repeating only the presstext of the Russfed?

tanjaflade: @schwab228 I am on site in Bratislava and I spoke to people on site.

schwab228: hmm ok...sounds still unbelievable. It´s not the first time she travels abroad....anyway thanks for the answer.

tanjaflade: @schwab228 It is definitely true. Probably the necessary document had expired and she hadn't noticed. She was at the airport in Moscow.

Ok.
First of all, I believe I am the only one who remembers that Alina already had a similair situation. I believe it was in juniors and she forgot some paper and authorities didn't let her out of Russia because of that. They missed first day of practices and came the next day.
Secondly, the situation seems very realistic to me since I do some dance competitions and festivals as well as travel myself to Russia. They do NOT let a kid out of Russia unless all the papers are correct and they are very strict about permission from parents which have to be valid and signed from both sides (sometimes it is hard to get it if parents are separated). If something is wrong they do not care if you are a tourist, athelete or anyone famous. As I am from Estonia, but one our dancer had Russian citizenship, so after going to Russia to a competitition, when we came to the border to return to Estonia, they asked for permission to travel only from kids who had russian citizenship.

I do not like how people started assuming weird theories about Alina or Team Eteri. If they really wanted, they would simply withdraw, noone would judge them. Same as when Julia didn't compete in Japan Open.
I hope it will all make Alina angry and fisty to come back stronger than ever.

New interview with Zhenya: https://tass.ru/interviews/5583842

- Is it true that your former coach Eteri Tutberidze advised you to finish your career?
"We never talked about this, neither before nor after the Olympics, and for the first time I heard about this in a questionable interview.

There are strange articles that are not confirmed, which are not true. I would like to take this opportunity to address the workers of the pen - please be careful and cautious with unverified information, because it can harm the reputation of both Russian and Canadian coaches and their pupils. Thank you in advance for your understanding. Sorry for the deviation from the question.

Training is completely different than before. It can not be said that this is better or worse than it was - just in a different way.

- The plans for visiting Russia are quite often. Now I must say that Canada - this is the place of my training, training base. I'm not going anywhere from Russia to leave. I do not understand how some people might think that changing the training base is a change of country or citizenship. I am a Russian figure skater and will perform, protecting the colors of the tricolor, always!

I am not a fan of Zhenya, but this interview is really nice and classy. It's obvious, how she trys to be respectful to both new and old teams, to Russian fans (who feel salty about her changing coaches) and to international fans (who don't like Etery) as well.
It sounds like a good start to a peace treaty in this Zhenya/Alina/Etery/Orser war. Well done!

That‘s a great interview! Zhenya once and for all clearing up that she‘s Russian and intends to continue competing for Russia and that she doesn’t want to talk badly about Eteri nor have people tell lies about her! Great. :)

As for Alina: I‘m glad that she‘s taking it in a funny way (instagram post) and while I‘m a bit sad we won‘t see her already, I‘ll look forward to Japan Open! Hoping for a wonderful costume for POTO and especially Carmen. Maybe black, I‘m sure she‘d look wonderful in it. Or red. :luv17:

That's next week, right? Didn't think that would be an option, since JO takes place right after, but it's great that they could squeeze her in!

And Evgenia going after the sensationalist journalists in her interview is everything. About time someone said that.

I‘m so happy right now! Now we have it confirmed that Alina is fine and healthy and it really just was a dumb passport problem. :palmf: I hope she‘ll have an amazing competition! Crossing my fingers for her! :)

Yeah, I agree. I‘m really glad she made that classy interview and called this journalist out on this... bs. :agree:

Nebelhorn Trophy will also have a gala on Saturday. So we will see Alina's gala performance hopefully. Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot will also be at the gala. Happy that Alina still can take part in the Challenger series.

And yay for Zhenya clearing up those rumours about her and Eteri. She is so classy. Telling those reporters off for spreading lies about her old coaching situation.
