It was funny that at the same time was the medal ceremony at ACI and they began with the third :laugh2:. Also funny was that monster cup Mika got and that he didn't knowwhat to do with thecup, the diplom, the bag and whatever thing he got as well..... Whole ceremony is funny to watch.

It is in fact Misha's own PCS record. Interesting that he got it in the Free not the Short. Maybe the contrast between him and the previous skaters played into it, in the SP there was nobody to compare him to. (Certain Yuzuru fans seem to be forgetting that the judges were not watching Nepela and AC on a split screen and scoring Misha against Yuzuru).

I'd say it's simply because his Carmen has more character to it than the short. At least in my perception, and the judges as well. He got less in SS, but more in the other four components, and that including a fall.

Yes, I think so too. At the moment I have a bit of trouble connecting to Misha's SP, although I appreciate its objective virtues. Maybe as the season progresses it will get easier. It's just there is this "a Lambiel program must be 100500 times better than a Klyushnichenko program" snobbery.

Pity you don't get to keep that cup. But it will get another plaque with Misha's name on it. I wonder if any unaware winners have ever tried to actually take it with them and got caught smuggling it out of the country

Now I really would like to see what shape Misha's 4Lz is in after the work with Raf and whatever it is they changed about the jump direction. Pity Misha or his group are not in the habit of posting training videos. I am mostly liking Misha's axis on the 3Lz so far. The main thing of course is that Misha sees that exit and doesn't go into the jump expecting not to land it as regularly happened according to him. Until that happens on a consistent basis in practices it's pointless to insert it into programs, if you don't believe you'll land the jump you won't.

What I am surprised the most is the placement of that triple salchow, as much of a placeholder as the lutz is, so I want to know the state of his quad sal too. But the lutz indeed looks good, and really easy. Also, Jackie Wong seems to have noticed the change in Misha's lutz technique, so hopefully we get to see him jumping more quads again - and landing them.

And the axels, can somebody do something about the axels as well? I don't even understand what the problem is there, unlike the 4Lz and 4S (being harder quads) or 3Lo (Misha hates the loop). Why does he pop them with such regularity?

I’m happy Misha had a good first competition and that his programs were well received (well, maybe his FS a bit more by some, but personally I love both). He seems to be in a very positive mindset, and I hope that continues! I’m trying to learn how to understand the new GOE guidelines for jumps. For example, Misha’s quad toe triple toe in the SP got four plus 4’s and three plus 3’s, and in the FS all plus 3’s. Does anyone have thoughts on what more he would need to do to earn even higher GOEs on that element, or why he got higher GOEs overall on it in SP than FS? (To be clear, this isn’t a complaint about his scores, I’m just trying to educate myself.:))

It is probably due to different panels, no? I thought myself that the 4T-3T looked more effortless in the SP but watched it again and can't say honestly. I guess the judges themselves don't know what they are doing now as they are new to the system too! To answer your question IMHO all he needs now is to continue to produce quality elements and show he can do it consistently, the judges quite like him now but they will love him even more if he lands the jumps consistently.

I agree with everything you expressed. I can understand why the music itself doesn’t appeal to some. (I groaned when I learned his SP was to Muse, even though I love some of their music.) But I think this is a wonderful vehicle for Misha and that he’s beginning to show a more sophisticated, deeper level of expression in relation to the music that I hadn’t quite seen before. Can it be improved upon? Most certainly! But this is a great start and foundation to build upon. D/R did use a portion of the same music in their Muse program, but theirs was a medley. Kovtun (and a number of others, including Ashley Wagner, Sergei, and now Vincent this season) used a different Muse song, Exogenesis, which I’m frankly tired of hearing in skating programs (and am really glad Stephane didn’t choose). I hope Misha can up his technical difficulty in due time, because he is a remarkable natural talent and has some of the most beautiful skating skills, spins, and jumps (when landed :)) that I’ve ever seen.

Many thanks for your explanation re Muse! I have to educate myself a bit :)

BTW, Tutto (and sorry if off topic), I can relate to your preference for “classical” music, having played piano and violin growing up. Your sentiment that pop music is an evil of modern life to be tolerated really cracked me up! And my husband (an accomplished amateur violinist and concert master in several large-city community orchestras) used to humor my passion and follow skating with me, but lost interest once more and more pop music began to be used, especially after lyrics were allowed. He did watch some of the skating during the Olympics, but said that a lot of the music “hurt” his ears LOL.

Oh how I understand your husband (can't claim any musical talents alas but...) Since the lyrics were allowed I've felt that my love for figure skating was sorely tried & tested. I don't expect skaters to go with classical pieces all the time but some songs they pick up - the wailing of 'Feeeling goood' for instance... especially after hearing it 3 - 4 times per competition, it tends to stick to your brain like a chewing gum to a cat :dev2:
I do love a lot of film scores though (I favour the Italians) , can't understand why those not used more often - a perfect vehicle I think. But enough of off-topic! And thank you very much for your thoughtful always interesting posts!

Could you give a link - thanks!

I do agree that the last part of the Carmen music is too repetitive. I was actually obsessing about that after watching it at test skates, LOL, even though I was pleased with the program! I wish they had varied it with the other main melody, and built to a climax at the end, which would have better highlighted his beautiful ending spins. (And thanks for your kind words and insights, Tutto!:))

ETA: I don’t watch TSL regularly but I did catch their episode on test skates (with Doug Haw), and Jonathan Beyer (being an opera singer, he does know music) also picked up on the ending repetitiveness of Carmen. BTW, the segment on Misha is kind of worth watching as Misha fans, even if you’re not a TSL fan — at the least, what they say about Misha will make you feel good!

I wonder if they got some feedback on that - surely it could not be too difficult to change?

Heleng, could you give me a hint on which part of the interview they talk of Mika (that is if you remember) or even better to give us a gist of what was said. It's bad of me but I have no time or patience to listen to the whole interview :thank:

Apparently there were people who believed Carmen would fit Misha perfectly. They must have known something about Misha that the rest of us were not privy to :handw:

It might have been simply a case of skating too early in the SP, I am certain that the contrast with other skaters would have played to his advantage if he skated in the last group

Here’s the link. Discussion about Misha begins around the 38:30 mark.

Thank you! So we were not the only ones who saw a qualitative leap. His skating quality improved with each season, but during this off-season something seems to have finally come together. Maybe it's the new rules that made them work harder on quality, maybe it's simply that the lessened pressure to up Misha's tech content at any price to make it to the Olympics gave them more room to breathe. Also Misha has finally stopped feeling like a poor relation and gained a certain confidence that he projects in his skates.
