2018-2019 GP Assignments

Both Mallet and Pineault were HOST PICKS, and neither would have been able to get a GP event by any other means. Mallet is not on the SB list that is used for GP selection (it's the 2017-2018 SB list) because she didn't compete last season. Alicia Pineault is on the SB list, but at #88---way past the #75 limit for GP selection. They got those spots because they were replacing two ORIGINAL host picks. Any host is entitled to replace host picks with its own skaters, and there are no eligibility requirements for host picks.

In some cases, a host doesn't have a suitable replacement within its own ranks, so has to go outside to find a replacement. This can happen with Pairs or Dance vacancies if the host isn't strong in those disciplines, but Canada is strong in all disciplines and didn't have a need to look elsewhere for replacements.

BTW, there is no rule that a host has to choose a skater who already has one event over a skater who has none.

Of the ladies on the substitute list, Skate Canada can choose a US skater since currently only one US skater is on the SC roster, and that is a consideration, given limited time and travel. Craine and Lim both train in the US, so they also meet travel restrictions.

Japan is maxed out on US ladies. They may wait to see the SC choice before naming theirs.

But the US also filled 15 spots already, didn’t they? Or am I mistaken??

Gracie is in a different category: Returning Skater (one who has been top 6 in last 10 years)---no other eligibility requirements. She can have two events.

Karen Chen has withdrawn from Helsinki.

It isn’t updated on this yet, but she isn’t on the entries list anymore

Is she injured?

There was some talk that she seemed unwell at 2nd Stage Russian Cup (for example she was always wearing a very big/heavy winter coat even though the venue was not that cold and other skaters were not wearing jackets) and she did withdraw from the FS there but nothing concrete has been said.

Isn't Skate America this week? Up until when can SkA still get a replacement in?

It's up to them now

For a Ladies or Men Skater, up to fourteen (14) days prior to the Team Leaders Meeting for that event, it is voluntary that an Organizing ISU Member replace any Skater who withdraws from the event who would be the 11th or 12th entry, but must replace with an alternate any Skater who withdraws if fewer than 10 entries remain.

And since it's less than 7 days away, skaters on alternate list can refuse the assignment.

I heard somewhere that she gave an interview in which she said that she had a small injury during warmup and that's why she withdrew.

I would think any Russian senior lady without a GP assignment would do everything in their power to get that spot, because any GP assignment guarantees a ticket to Russian Nationals.

I would also love for Sima to get the spot
