2018-2019 GP Assignments

I would think any Russian senior lady without a GP assignment would do everything in their power to get that spot, because any GP assignment guarantees a ticket to Russian Nationals.

I would also love for Sima to get the spot

Maybe Buianova can pull a Hail Mary and actually do something good for Gubanova by just bringing a different student. I’m sure travel arrangements for her team are already in place. Just need to change one name on a flight and hotel registration to Anastasiia. Seems like an easy solution if she still has her passport in order

I would infinitely rather Sima get the slot.

I wish it were that easy. Sk. America would have to pick gubanova to compete there since it is not the russian federation that sends the skater, it is up to the host to invite the skater. I really hope gubanova or sakhanovich get picked!!:)

They picked Serafima last season to fill in for a late vacancy. A lot of consideration from the host pick is cost and travel issues. That’s why they usually pick someone close. If Buianova and RusFed have their :curse: together they could lobby for it on the basis that they already have these travel arrangements in place. Of course you’re correct...the US can choose anyone they want. RusFed can (and should) make suggestions and in return offer “future considerations” ;)

Gubanova has a higher scoring potential and could actually sneak into contention. I absolutely love both girls but Anastasiia needs a break as much as anyone in the sport and could do really well if she is ready to go. Serafima has already had several opportunities including GP assignments. She was a late sub for Skate America just last season.

I don’t expect Buianova to pull it off by any means. She’s probably making weekend plans and hasn’t even made the effort

Gubanova is below Leonova (190.95), Sakhanovich (189.75), Mikhailova (185.09), Guliakova (181.43), Fedichkina (180.33), and Gracheva (162.59) on the SB list. Obviously her SB (160.75) isn't an actual reflection of how talented she is but it does make it difficult to justify giving her the SA spot when there are six russians above her on the SB listing without a spot.

Unfortunately that low JGP score really lets Gubanova down as that was her only international competition (and actually looking at the SB listing I can understand why she ended up staying in juniors).

I wish RusFed would have had her doing Challanger Series events this season for moments just like this.

**Sigh**

ETA: Now I have to wonder what Sima’s SB was when she was added late last year to Skate America. There is no way it could have been very high given her state the season prior

She was #42, with 177.35, so not too far out. She was 27th in world standings too.

Thanks. How did you find that?

If US Fed uses this measure as the determining factor again then it should be between Kailani and Sima. Sima has the slight edge but it’s real close. I’d imagine Russia is going to lobby hard for that spot but who knows. I just don’t want wait very long to find out

I don’t think we’re done with the late withdrawal game this season. Future considerations can come in handy. That’s a disadvantage for Australia unfortunately. I just hope whoever gets the spot does well. Sima took advantage last season of her opportunity . No doubt about it.

I’m still saying a little prayer for Anastasiia

Also, Gabby hasn’t withdrawn from NHK Trophy, but it seems questionable to me that she’d be ready for that when she doesn’t feel in the right place to go to SCI.

Granted, we don’t know precisely what her issue is, so maybe a week or two will allow her to sort things out (I guess that’s her hope, since she didn’t withdraw from both?), but I'm provisionally expecting another NHK vacancy. I hope, as well, that Gabby doesn’t try to impose some kind of timeline on her recovery, especially not such a short one.

I think it would make sense to replace Radionova with another Russian lady. So many great Russian ladies but who can get there in time? It's Monday.. you'd assume you can't get out until Tuesday now at the earliest and then there are other considerations like jet lag. It would make more sense to trade that Russian ladies spot for someone from Korea and then trade Dabin's spot for Russian at SC? Irk. I don't know.

I'll say again that I want Kailani to get a spot.

Here's how I've been doing it.

To find last year's SB list, go to the ISU website, Figure Skating, Statistics, This year's SB list for whichever discipline you want. Then, look at the address in the address bar. It will say 18-19 at some point in the address. Change the 18-19 to 17-18 and you can see last year's list.

To find the World Standings list, go to the ISU website, Figure Skating, World Standings, and select the correct discipline.

Skate America is the only competition a Russian lady can go to because all of the other ones have 3 Russian ladies already.

I absolutely think one of the Russian should get this spot, but if for travel reasons they can’t lets not forget Eunsoo still doesn’t have a second spot confirmed. And she should before Kailani gets one. Although with all the open spots I truly hope she does.

here are the seasons best from last season. They make it pretty clear that ideally Leonova should get the spot as I think she's the highest lady without at least one spot. Alternatively Sima is a very good option if they want to promote younger talent as she's just below and has been performing better this season.

For this event I'd really like to see a Russian selected as both Sima and Leonova are above skaters like Eunsoo who can be invited to some of the other free spots whilst the Russian girls are reliant on other Russian girls dropping out and thus this may be the only spot that comes free that they are able to use.

I was curious mostly how you knew her WS at the time of the selection. Doesn’t that change throughout the season? I certainly appreciate the info.
