2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

This is a little random, but I compiled a projected list of ladies who have a bye to Nationals this year...

Mariah Bell - Top 5 @ 2018 Nats
Karen Chen - Top 5 @ 2018 Nats
Ting Cui - International bye through Tallinn Trophy
Gracie Gold - International bye through Rostelecom Cup
Courtney Hicks - International bye through NHK Trophy
Ashley Lin - International bye through Inge Solar Memorial / Alpen Trophy
Angela Wang - International bye through NHK Trophy
Bradie Tennell - Top 5 @ 2018 Nats

I don't think that anyone who gets assigned to Golden Spin will get a bye because last year, the ladies who did get assigned there had to qualify to Nats through sectionals. I wonder if USFS is really gonna make Starr qualify through Sectionals (ofc I know she'll win), because I don't see how else she is going to qualify. What is the implication if this does happen? I'm pointing this out because USFS been pushing Starr so much...

Didn't Starr have a GP? Thought that gives her a bye to Nats

I have to check the rule book, but I think anyone that has two GP gets a bye to nationals. If not, going to sectionals will be good practice before nationals.

Awesome - can’t wait to see Gracie skating her new programs!

I just hope she's able to enjoy her comeback. Elaine Zayak didn't medal at Nationals when she made her comeback but, she said that she loved every minute of it. Other than Bradie, the US Ladies are like a box of chocolates. We truly don't know who's getting that second spot for Worlds. The Title is Bradie's to lose and after that, Who knows.

I read the competition rules and I think I will be ok.

Really a bummer that our ladies are in 7, 8, and 10. Hopefully they will be able to move up some places in the long. But unfortunately I am not very optimistic.

This is a really really deep field! And well... with these three, perhaps hoping for their personal best is better than hoping for a medal.

Funny... for years I blamed Chicago for Mariah's bad shorts. Now I'm starting to realize that shorts just aren't her thing.

When was the last time the US ladies had not one lady medaling on the GP?

I'm pretty sure it never happened. But then skating has never been this deep in history either. Back then you could've fallen underrotated and maybe even popped and still made it on the podium so long as some of your triples were clean. Now, you have to be virtually spotless.

I could continue to before they had a final, but it looks like 2004-2005 was the worst year, but we still had a medalist, and we still might.

Any updates on Karen regarding next week? When she is on, she is a medal threat! But when she is off, well . . . Given her recent troubles, I am not too optimistic.

I am also worried that Camp Gracie has been silent.

If one or both end up withdrawing, I would not be greatly surprised.

On a more optimistic note, I think Bradie can medal in France.

I hope Karen is healthy enough to go next week. I don't have any hopes for her placement but I'm ready to see her programs! It's November and we haven't seen them yet.

I don't think it is bad that Gracie has been silent. This entire comeback process has been silent. Last year when Gracie withdrew it was over a month out. Its a week away. She might not have her best event ever, but I think she will be there if there is anyway possible. And even cup of China was several weeks out from the event when she withdrew.

Interesting! If you go back to when there were only individual events, before the ISU put them together in a grand prix or championship series, the only years when USA did not have a ladies' medalist were 1973 and 1976. (I just looked it up  )

Skate Canada started in 1973. This was the only "Grand Prix" event until 1979, when Skate America and NHK began. After that, USA had a medalist at Skate America every year the event was held except the two times when it was at Everett, Washington (2008 and 2018) -- must be a curse. ;)

Skate America was not held in 1980, 1984 and 1987, but between Elaine Zayak, Tiffany Chin, Debi Thomas and Jill Trenary, U.S. skaters won other events.

I think Bradie is more likely to medal in France than not. I think she will be hungry - and it's not a super deep field.

I'm not at all worried about the radio silence from Team Gracie. It's clearly their modus operandi for this season, and that's fine. We've been spoiled over the past few years with skaters and social media.

I suspect Gracie's practices at Rostelecom will be more telling than her performances. We'll see how she's been training.
